GMC Forum _ Ben Higgins _ When Spiders Attack Video Collab !

Welcome to my new Video Collab - When Spiders Attack !!
Some of you will remember that I spontaneously composed this track in a previous video chat and the name was picked at random by Gary (aka Blister !) so that's where the origins of this track are 
I went for an 80's American style commercial hard rock vibe.. so this could be the soundtrack to blasting down the interstate in a Corvette and then cruising down town to pick up a burger and fries!

The main key for everything is G# Minor so the G# Minor Scale will work over the whole thing. If the G# Minor scale works then the G# Minor Pentatonic automatically works too. However, feel free to experiment with other modes and things !!
Chords are:
Main riff: G#Minor7, Eadd9, F#add11, C#Minor7
2nd riff: E5, G#Minor, F#, C#Minor, E5, G#Minor, F# and back to the beginning...
You don't have to play over the whole thing, just do whatever you like
So, as you see this is a VIDEO Collab so what I will from you is:
-Video footage (please leave the sound on if you can so it's easier to place when editing together !)
-basic mix of your solo so I can hear how it sounds over the track/where it goes
-isolated solo track to use for the audio mix
What I recommend doing is if you want to upload and share your take with everybody like we normally do, then you could either embed a Youtube vid or upload an mp3. When it comes to sending me all the video files I recommend you to send them in a pm with a download link. The audio files you could upload straight to the forum and I'll take them from there !
Deadline for this collab is Wednesday 24th October

If I am not mistaken I said somezing about vearing spandex and an 80's vig for zis collab...right? (hope I got all zi clichée german accent zings in zis post).

Das ist toll !! This collab now officially has 2 Germans on it so the cool factor has increased
Me & Christian agreed on a rule a while back that all collabs need at least 1 German before they are considered to have 'started.' I've got 2 so I feel blessed
I like the 2 note chord idea you have Dieter, it works well. I think it's so cool you just got up and jammed in your dressing gown. I can imagine you explaining to your wife ' I'm just laying down a solo for a track called "When Spiders Attack.." '

WHAT? video.... I never signed up for this. I can't even take a leak in the public toilet, much less play my guitar on a video.... Guess I'll have to put on clothes now when I'm playing.... again. That's why I went with Internet instructors, the in person instructor that I had took offense to my uhh natural playing ability... She told me there were no "Whammy Bars" in acoustic playing. I tried to explain that it really was a vibrato.... oh well.
We'll see, maybe I can dust off my old VHS video camera.

since this was a video collab , I never even listened to the track until this morning(freaking phenomenal) , so I wrote this today
have a few days to work this up to speed and see if I can try a video( never done video before )wish me luck.
and even if I don't make the deadline , I have not writin like this in over ten years. Thanks Ben!

I wasn't quite sure about the style here. Since I'm not a gambling man, I took no chances, but tried to squeeze in as many notes as possible on top of this short backing track. Oh, and I couldn't find my spandex and wig kit.

Good stuff, man. Some of the busier runs are a bit messy, perhaps simplify things even more. I'd rather hear a good melody more than anything so don't feel you gotta cram in fast runs !

I recorded this one with the thought it would just be a referance for what I wanted to do for a final take, but after listening to it a few times I thought it had a certain rawness that I liked so I just went with it, even though it is a little bit sloppy and has a few accidentals.
If I can find the time I may redo it or make another one. This is the first time I got something halfway decent on the first take.
No spiders were harmed in the making of this video.
PS: Aparently my files are too big to upload somehow so I will have to put them on some file sharing site I guess,Not sure why they are too big as I have never had a problem in the past.Anyways I will post a link to them when I have found a good file sharing site, any recomendations?
PSS: I just noticed Jstcrsn's attached file is 11.65 MB. The largest file I have is only 4.87 MB. What gives?

I used RapidShare before, which worked well but I found it somewhat difficult to use (that might be just me though). Now I have DropBox, which is very convenient. Just in case you want to avoid filling your attachment quota again.

I really like the way you use the whammy for vibrato, like George Lynch, Adrian Smith etc. I always thought it was a really effective and easy technique to use and don't understand why more people with whammy enabled guitars don't do it more often
I think you're right. I'm gonna pick up the phone and see if MAB is around...

I don't know where you guys are finding those licks, I can't barely find a "top-sounding" lick in my whole solo.
However I don't hear anything Hard Rock-ish sound in all your takes people

One of those 2 is a good file sharing platform. You'll just have to make an account - username/password and then you can attach files. Rapidshare will give you a link which you can copy and paste into a pm

I was fortunate to be in the chat the day Ben started creating this bt (work schedule rarely allows). It was fun watching it progress. I was truly humbled & honored when Ben picked my suggestion for the title. I was hoping to actually participate in this as my first collab but partly due to not being used to jamming/collabing with others but mostly because a lot of "life" stuff going on right now. I do love this style & this is definitely one of my favorite collab bt's so far. All these uploads are amazing. I have REALLY enjoyed listening to all these takes. I cannot wait to see the final version of the collab. Congrats Ben for an awesome backing & to my fellow GMC'ers for your inspiring takes!

thanks , this has been such a great learning experience, I havent really started recording till the guess the riff thread and then this backing is what I grew up with so I thought I would try the video camera I bought for my wife (uh-hum)

Well bullets in a bucket how the frik did I miss this? It's right up my alley! Well I can enjoy the takes! Sounding very spiff so far!
Some of you will remember that I spontaneously composed this track in a previous video chat and the name was picked at random by Gary (aka Blister !) so that's where the origins of this track are
I went for an 80's American style commercial hard rock vibe.. so this could be the soundtrack to blasting down the interstate in a Corvette and then cruising down town to pick up a burger and fries!

: 1161The main key for everything is G# Minor so the G# Minor Scale will work over the whole thing. If the G# Minor scale works then the G# Minor Pentatonic automatically works too. However, feel free to experiment with other modes and things !!
Chords are:
Main riff: G#Minor7, Eadd9, F#add11, C#Minor7
2nd riff: E5, G#Minor, F#, C#Minor, E5, G#Minor, F# and back to the beginning...
You don't have to play over the whole thing, just do whatever you like
So, as you see this is a VIDEO Collab so what I will from you is:
-Video footage (please leave the sound on if you can so it's easier to place when editing together !)
-basic mix of your solo so I can hear how it sounds over the track/where it goes
-isolated solo track to use for the audio mix
What I recommend doing is if you want to upload and share your take with everybody like we normally do, then you could either embed a Youtube vid or upload an mp3. When it comes to sending me all the video files I recommend you to send them in a pm with a download link. The audio files you could upload straight to the forum and I'll take them from there !
Deadline for this collab is Wednesday 24th October

Hmmm.... I just submitted a video and recording at 155BPM and found it much slower than other submissions.
Are you sure that's not 185 BPM?
Or is it just my setup is slowing the track down.

Yes, I also noticed that the backing track sounded slowed down. Not sure how that would happen. Maybe try importing it again and seeing what tickable options appear when you're about to import into your trackline. It may have something ticked that stretches it.. ?
I love that bend you do around 0:40.. very tasteful.. all in all, the second half is the strongest half.. good to have you on board !

the funny thing is , my first few leads lines along with your backing have always reminded me of Turbo Lover,and the this morning I found if you change the timing of these licks their Electric Eye - I dont know how I am supposed to feel about this

I think it somewhat has to do with the style and quality of the backing yes. It just seems there are alot of us that can relate to it and it is improvisationally friendly. And yeah Spiders! Keep it going man!

When I listen to my old takes I think they were crappy enough, I'm glad I became better at playing solos

Ok Guys, it's finally here !!!
I approached the mix as a 'song' so rather than have everybody's take playing all the way through I combined them together to (hopefully) complement each other. I'm sorry if I left out any licks that you really liked.. but at least we have the full takes in the thread in all their glory so nothing is lost
I have to say this is the best collab I've ever been involved in and I thank you all for your contribution to making it what it is !!

Gitarrero - Nice use of some certain classic metal licks (which we won't mention..) ! Good composition, love the tapping at the end too. Watch out for hand co ordination as well on stuff like that ascending sequence around 0.10 and maybe try and get some more vibrato action going too
WeePee - Another classic solo from The Finn. Love the harmonies and the overall pace of the solo. I also noticed the Adrian Smith blues lick in there too Brilliant ending with the bend.. that's how it's done !
Dieter - I really like the chord ideas you've got going on here ! We need to work with you on getting some more licks into your repertoire and working on your timing so you can spice up your takes a bit more.. but so far, so good. And always a pleasure to have you onboard !
jstcrsn - Some great note choices here. Building a melodic theme in a solo is very important and you demonstrated this to good effect ! Could do with some work to improve hand synch as the fast runs were a little unintelligible but that's all
mroberts70 - Solid offering from you here, Mark. The tone is a bit fizzy, not sure if that's the gear/software you're using maybe ? Rhythmically strong, nothing out of place.. needs some more variation as it sounds like it all takes place in one area but we've been talking about this anyway, so all good
DeGroot - Great stuff here, DG. Good, measure, well paced and relaxed take. Full of your usual great vibrato and bending. Not feeling that second arpeggio at 0.33 but that's just me ! Nice work
HungryforHeaven - What can I say ? Probably my personal fave of all the solos that you've submitted to a collab yet ! It's got it all. Great melody, great technique, good pacing. I better stop there before you start acting like Yngwie...
Squonk - Really strong entry, Dave. Great pace, the way you start with a slow note and add to it is classic solo composition. Really like the lick from 0.18-0.20 too ! The tone itself was very bassy and quite loud when I dropped it into my mix so you might want to check the signal and turn it down a bit so it doesn't distort !
Mike Bryant - Mike, I'm really pleased you jumped right into this collab and it's good to meet you ! There's a great double stop bend in your take and those natural harmonics are a nice touch. Like Dieter, we can work with you to add to your abilities so you can start crafting some more licks to add ! Timing, hand co ordination and some licks that work on your fretting hand dexterity should get you to a new level !
Gregc1 - Another classic from the Greg Man ! Beautiful phrasing and use of whammy... and those chords !! I'll leave it at that
AK Rich - Man, you definitely resurrected the spirit of the 80's with the tone and whammy use. Doubling was a nice effect too. Those bits around 0.20 are brilliant. I think you're recording with your signal too hot so it's causing massive amounts of hiss and distortion which is a shame because it ruins your take a bit, so try not to take the 'turn it up to 11' thing too literally !
Christophe - Another person who I was glad to welcome to the collab (first of many, I hope !). There's some good ideas in here, the whammy use was great and the over hand thing and tapping work !! There's some notes near the beginning which sound as if they're in the wrong scale so they won't help too much.. and I think the high E string was a bit flat. But for a first entry, well done !
Again, it's a shame I ah to miss out a lot of licks from your takes but the good things is that they're preserved here for posterity

I didn't have a plan so I sat down and did about 5 or so jams over the top before I recorded anything. I had an idea of where I wanted to go for the start note, and roughly where I wanted to go after that but it was totally on the edge and non rehearsed !!
