GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ So Sad And So Funny, Great White Play To Nobody

Anybody remember "Great White"? I was never really a fan, but check this out. They are booked to play an 8,000 seat venue and there's almost nobody there. This isn't a sound check. Wow.

what this all about? first band of another 25 to come??? must be really hard for Great White - whose stuff of the 80ies I liked...

I guess they never recovered from the tragic fire at The Station. But then again, I don't think they were that popular at that time either.

Yeah it's kinda sad. They had a few big songs and such. And now a 8,000 seat venue has a few folks on the floor not even paying attention. Ouch!!!!!!

Ouch, that is pretty rough to watch. I just remember that one big hit Great White had in the early 90's that was always on MTV. I'm guessing someone lost a lot of money on that show.
Reminds me of when I saw Nuclear Assualt some years ago when they got back together. Only about 20 people at the show. They played the show with an energy like it was a packed house though!

That's pretty much what happens with the gigs right now. Of course...this is a HUUUUUUGE sad example..but i noticed same at the smaller scale as well 
Less people go to the concerts these days....

Let's keep it real: Great White are just another generic band from the 80's. They jumped on the bandwagon, and enjoyed modest success while that style of music was hot in the US. As we all know, most copycat bands fade away, and have little staying power. This is one of the consequences of jumping on a trend.
Jumping on trends in the US is particularly dreadful. Trends in the US shift fast and usually disappear from the mainstream for good. Record labels find out whats hot, sign up hundreds of acts, and saturate the market until something sticks. This is what happened to Great White.
A good sign of staying power is if young people continue to listen your music. There's still 14 year old kids listening to Judas Priest, GNR, Sabbath, Maiden, etc. No one under the age of 45 listens to Great White lol

No one 45 listens to them anymore either.
That being said ... and in the interest of keeping it real ... they do have three gold and two platinum records.
It was a pretty lucrative bandwagon to jump on. Once Bitten, Twice shy (double platinum single) is still played on the radio.

According to Wikipedia the album "Once Bitten" 1987, went double platinum in the US (2 mill) and gold in Canada (50K).
The album "Twice Shy"1989, went double platinum in the US (2mill) and Canada (200K).
And the album "Hooked" 1991, went Gold in the US (500K) and Canada (50K). So, not the best run of all time but nothing to sneeze at either.
Anyway, yeah it is a bit sad to see that meager turnout for their show. There are a boatload of bands from that era touring the country playing small clubs and state fairs etc. We are expecting Tesla to perform at the Alaska State Fair this fall
. I actually went to a Great White concert back in the early 90's. It was a great show and they sounded great which is saying a lot due to the crappy acoustics of the arena we have up here 
. Not to mention the place was full of fine young ladies! I had a great time.

MILLI VANILLI had GOLD and PLATINUM albums as well, but I digress.
Personally I always thought the band was just sorta lame. Now they are really lame with a really oooooooold looking lead singer. The entire thing is just really sad. The only output from that band that I enjoyed was when they were a Led Zeppelin Cover band. I've heard recordings on youtube of them in those days and they were quite good.
That being said ... and in the interest of keeping it real ... they do have three gold and two platinum records.

Whether they suck now or then wasn't really my point. I didn't listen to them then either nor would I go see them now. But they had a decent run and were part of an era (as were many many bands that maybe sucked and sold a hell of a lot more records than I have to be sure - that's showbiz). My guess is that they probably still dig playing (even after the Station night club tragedy). Somebody booked them a bad gig on the wrong bill and in the wrong venue. That sometimes happens even when a band is at the top of their game.
*I played with Fabrice Morvan of Milli Vanilli for awhile after the other one (Rob) jumped off a balcony. He does a singer/songwriter thing and he actually sings and writes pretty well. It was a cool gig for awhile. But I digress

Speaking of staying power. About 5 or 6 years ago Styx played at this amphitheater near my house, and they were great. They're coming back next Saturday and I'm looking forward to seeing them again - even though they don't have DeYoung, the singer they do have nails those parts, and without DeYoung they're a heavier band. They were the first concert I took my son to also. Back then REO Speedwagon opened up for them, and I was never a fan of REO but they were awesome too. Sort of like Toto, another band I never got into but live was just sort of in awe of how good they were.
I saw Great White back in the 90s, and that show brings back some terrible memories, I ran into some guy I knew from high school that had shattered my car window and I almost got into a fight with him and his friends - me picking it because I was drunk, because of something that happened years before. So ever since then when I would hear a Great White tune, my cringe would go through the roof.
Another band I saw at a bar where my band actually played at, was Ron Keel. He was the lead singer of a band called Keel. Anyway, it was Spinal Tap-ish too. On the opening lick, which started with a heavy snare roll, the guitar didn't come on, so they all had to stop - and Ron Keel was waiting in the wing, which was an awful bathroom - and he trotted about halfway out to make his grand entrance, then ran back into the bathroom while they fixed the guitar - then the band started over - and he ran out and they were all choreographed in their stage presence - and it was uber-lame!!! But, the band was good, Keel was a good singer, songs were extremely 80s sounding. There were maybe 30 people there, so in between sets the entire band just sat at the bar with people, and nobody had anything to say to them except "hi" because they weren't famous.
Still, very sad what happened at the Station. I saw a documentary on that and it's heart breaking. This guy happened to catch the entire thing on film from start to finish, and he was up near the stage - and luckily made it out - incredible and tragic how fast this fire spread.

Now that's a segue!!! BTW I played with Milli. Small world and getting smaller! I do get your point And yeah, both acts certainly sold more records than I ever will. Then again, I don't sell em. Times really have changed, remember when you could charge for music?

I give them kudos for playing anyways. I mean, you gotta really suck up the let-down feeling they must have felt, and yet they still performed. Lead singer looks like he's wearing his bowling league shirt - he's the antithesis of fashion. ug.
