I don't seem to be able to download lesson backing tracks to my iPad. Is this feature not available or am I just being a bit thick??

For security reasons you can't directly download from Safari into your music library, if that's what you mean? If you're trying to download audio to bring into garageband, you can do that via iCloud. In other words, transfer the file to iCloud, then import it from there into Garageband.
