Task 9 : https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Land-Of-Legato/

That's right, disciples..... it's legato time !

First, you need to warm up by jogging around the Temple 3 times, followed by 50 squats and 30 star jumps..

There's not a lot to explain.. it's time to focus on the fretting hand and build up more control and independence over the fingers. You'll probably find that it's difficult to control the timing of your 3rd and 4th fingers specifically. Don't worry too much and just accept the fact that it will be a little clumsy to begin with but it will improve the more you do it smile.gif

Deadline is next Thursday 29th March - Enjoy !

This is gonna hurt - I need this. I looked at it a while back and it's tough and painful on the left hand.

Hehe.. the hardest thing is trying to get the fingers moving where you want them to, in a controlled rhythm. Best thing to do when you're teaching yourself a new left hand sequence is to keep going over it ultra light with no tension at all, as if you're not concerned with making a sound on the guitar. If you focus on the correct movements (with no extra muscular input) it's like drawing the correct map... once you've drawn the map you can gradually concentrate on the tone and exerting a little more pressure on to the fretboard. smile.gif

hey Ben, sorry dude, this legato lesson has been way tough for me. I think Im gonna need about a year to get this sussed! Just for the LOLZ I recorded it anyway just to at least show that I had been trying to get it. its at 60bpm and should be quite painful on your ears huh.gif

http://soundcloud.com/bleez666/legatofail

I actually found it easier to hit the notes at a faster bpm ( 80bpm) but I kept making mistakes towards the end ( going from the 13th fret on the B string to the 12th on the E.) so I had to really slow it down to 60bpm.

I will keep working on it though, I'll record it each week and when it gets a bit better I'll give you a shout.

Dude I love it.. Legatofail haha laugh.gif I'm glad you've got a sense of humour wink.gif

It is a tough lesson.. especially tough when you've only got a mildly distorted tone as well. Do you have a sound with more gain or is that it ?

Ben I feel I'm in the same boot as bleez with this one. I've been putting some time in but it's hard to get even tone. I'm gonna keep working on it for now. Thanks for the push on this one. I've been avoiding it.

Yeah it's not an easy technique at all.. it's hard to get things sounding even. I still remember when I couldn't seem to control my little finger at all !!

When I practise sweeping I could record my own 'Sweep Fail' recordings so don't worry guys ! wink.gif

LOL! yeah, its a great take aint it! I might get a gig with spinal tap LOL!

Im using a toneport ux1 with pod farm 1 so I can get a more distorted tone, I never actually thought about changing the sound..... Im thinking lots of digital delay wink.gif

Its kinda annoying coz I can play shorter blasts of that legato lesson quite fast but trying to get through the whole thing as evenly as possible is really tough. If I could pick the start note for every block of 4 notes..... I'd be awesome at that!

going forward though, I'll use a more distorted tone and just keep at it.

Yeah, I agree with the others, this was a tough one.
I did work on it everyday this week and definitely improved over the course of those days.
But, this take is only at 80 bpm and still lots of issues with it.

Hey MR ! I was expecting it not to be as good as it was by the way you introduced it.. but I was pleasantly surprised smile.gif

One thing you probably noticed was that naughty 3rd finger kept wanting to hit strings that were above it.. so that's one point of focus that you can improve just by being aware of it. Practise is a bit like that.. you're playing a lick and you're aware of certain things that need improving so bit by bit you pick an area of focus and go through them, eventually ironing them all out.

Good work ! Have a donut biggrin.gif
