My most favorite piece of gear these days is probably the humblest of devices.
A direct box! Radial JDX ... http://www.radialeng.com/jdx.php Especially great when playing outside (ever heard the wind brush up against an sm57) and/or you're sharing the stage with other acts (mics and stands get kicked).
