I found a posting on Craigslist that was looking for a guitar player for a church praise band. I've been doing that in the past, but I'm looking for a new church/band, so I sent them an e-mail.

They sent me back a list of songs to learn and a day to show up for an audition and interview. The audition part went pretty well. I screwed up one of the licks because they were playing it in a different key than the recorded version, but I was able to adjust and continue.

The post-audition interview went pretty good too until they asked me what type of music I listened to. I replied that I was pretty into guitar heavy stuff and that I really liked Vai, Satriani, Gilbert, Paco de Lucia, Brad Richter... Then I said my favorite bass player was Les Claypool. ohmy.gif

I probably should have said that I was a big fan of Hillsong United, Jeremy Camp and Third Day. laugh.gif

Are you saying that you didn't get the gig because of who you listened to?

Hhahahahahahah if the band cares about what you listen to more than your ability to play I think you'd be ALOT better off without them...

I'd imagine a non church based group would be more accepting of Les Claypool's wild antics though..

They sent me an e-mail 2 days after the audition saying that something major had changed at the church and that they'd ceased the search for a new guitar player completely.

This thread was mostly tongue-in-cheek. It just seemed a little odd to be applying for a church "job" and not cite any Christian musicians as my favorites.

Gotcha. Sorry you didn't get the gig. I'm not going to go off on a rant about the suspected hypocrisy of not considering you because of the fact that your favorite music did not include something "less questionable", because I don't know for sure. You have to wonder, though.

Funny. I play in a church praise band as well as a heavy metal band.

I had actually asked about this sort of "conflict of interest." My church music director replied "Dan, GOD loves metal too."

Words to live by...

I think it will be just fine if people are polite, avoid sarcasm and irony and treat eachother with respect. The golden rule. wink.gif
