Hey all,

Just bought Ableton Live Standard 9, because I was going to need it for electronic music that I am studying at school.

Anyway, is Ableton Live any good for traditional rock/metal kinds of music? Or is it more for electronic. Because I already have Studio One installed, but I am wondering if anyone uses Ableton Live as their main DAW for guitar stuff.. Thanks!

Congrats for your aquisition, now you have dual monitor support and unlimited undo (my favorite biggrin.gif) smile.gif This is a nice addition in Ableton 9 and very useful smile.gif I also want to buy this version.

I use daily Ableton 8 for any kind of music. It was the first musical program that I learned and it's much comfortable for me.
Yes, for electronic music has cool things but it doesn't mean that you can't use it for other music. It can be use like any other DAW wink.gif

Hi Monica,
Do you know of any good resources to learn Ableton? I have it as well but man it seems a bit confusing. I've been using Mixcraft but I know that Ableton (from what I've been told) is much more powerful. Did you learn just by messing around in it?

Hi Wavo,

First time I learn it in a quick way the basic. I mean 24 hours. In that period I was totally parallel with musical programs biggrin.gif In one day a guy gave me a project to do and I must compose a song for a photograph site. In that moment I realize that if I want to don't lose the project I must learn a program. Somebody show me how to make first settings in Ableton and how to connect my instrument. Next 24 hours was full of experiments smile.gif I tried to find tutorials and was enough for a beginning. Next day I start already to compose. In one week I was ready with the song and the result of recording was really cool.
But after this I wasn't satisfied with what I learned and I start to try every button to see what it's doing. At this moment I'm very attached from this program and I still try to find new tips and tricks wink.gif All my recordings are made with Ableton so you can hear exactly how it sound. This is the story how I learn it smile.gif

You can find some tutorials on YT or if you want another short way, I can tell you which are the steps to setting all and how to make a recording session from the start at the end in the most simple way. If you use Guitar Rig you will be very satisfied how it will sound your guitar using Ableton wink.gif

Bless you! Thank you Monica! I suppose there's no better way to learn a program than when you have to learn it...right? I'm not in that position so every time I try to use Ableton and try to get it setup I get frustrated and try something else. smile.gif I will look at these tutorials and see what I can learn. Part of my problem before was that my audio interface was giving me problems, I think I have it dialed in now (I hope). Thanks for your help! I'm going to get to playing!

You're welcome smile.gif Yes you have right, when the program it's a must to be learn, it's a good push and everything looks more easy. But trust me, you gonna love Ableton wink.gif
Any problem you have or if you don't understand something you can ask me and I will try to help you. Also when you save the project from Ableton in wav file you must do some settings. Very important settings. I will send you this evening when I arrive at home, a print screen with my settings for this thing. You will not find these in tutorials. It took me 1 year to understand what was wrong with my previous settings.
You said that you had problems with audio interface. BTW what audio interface do you have? I hope your audio interface have ASIO drivers because have low latency and work faster.

I had a look at it the other day for software synth live performance situations hosting Omnisphere and other stuff.
It's so different to other DAWs I've used I was lost straight away.

Monica,

Do you have Standard or Suite? I chose standard, mainly because I already have a lot of VST synths that I like, and I didn't see the need for the drum library and orchestral library (I already have software for that). Is the suite version worth the extra money? Is there any real advantage for me in this case?

I have version 8 Suite. I also use some VST synths but in Suite you can find some very cool effects. I always like it to have all things possible, maybe someday I will need all of these wink.gif I'm very cautious and I don't want to waste time finding stuff when I need them urgently.
The difference between Standard and Suite it's expensive, almost 250 EUR. I don't know how much you will use Ableton library if you already have VST synths that you like.
It's a good thing to have a program full but if you don't need to use all these, Standard version it's a good choice wink.gif

You can see here which are the differences between Intro, Standard and Suite.

Thanks again Monica, yes I would love a screen grab. I'm going to try to tackle learning some Ableton this weekend so if there are settings I should know about please send them my way!
The first interface I was using was just my Fender Mustang Amp. It has it's own ASIO drivers but they sure did not like my system and gave me a lot of grief. I was about to buy a Focusrite Scarlett when I realized my Vox Tonelab ST (Multi-effects pedal) could connect to the computer and so far it has worked flawlessly! I'm only a little frustrated that I can't quite get the sounds that I want to out of the Tonelab so I might still end up getting a pure audio interface.

What do you use? Thanks for your help again. Happy Friday!

I have Line 6 UX2 and I can say that was a very good choice. I never had problems with her and wasn't expensive. I sent you what I said in PM wink.gif

I've been messing around with Live basically all afternoon biggrin.gif Seems like a really powerful program. I'm really liking the session view, it can help me write songs and work out parts. Still not 100% sold on the arrangement view, I think my other DAW handles mixing/mastering stuff a bit better :\

And I keep looking at all the synths in Ableton Suite that I don't have biggrin.gif

So what do you guys think? Has anyone used Studio One and Ableton Live before? What were the main pros and cons of each? smile.gif
