I would say SM58 is good for anything, it's an industry standard for vocal mics. It should handle screams/growls just like any other singing.

Man, I agree with Ivan, but the best way to record vocals is to use a decent preamp and a Condenser Mic. I say this because for -litteraly- years I struggled to record decent vocals with dynamic microphones, and really it is nowhere near the effect you'll have with a condenser mic, buddy. And there are some really budget models from companies like Behringer etc, so you may want to go that way....

Hope this helps...

Sorry I didn't understand properly, I somehow though it was for live! Yes enforcer is right, if you wanna record at home than condenser mic and a solid mic preamp are what you need.

Check out Rode NT1, it's a great entry level. If that can't fit the budget, possibly some Behringer like C1

I have recorded a lot of growl vocals on many death metal songs. And i have tested various of microphones both condensators and dynamic and imo SM58 beats every condensator microphone when it comes to growl. But if you're planning to record regular vocals a dynamic microphone wont sound as good as a condensator microphone.

do it old school. Get an old and used telephone with a built in tape recorder to it. Put the recorder at least 300 yards away from you. Decapitate a rat, and use it to cover up the recorder, and there you go. Old schoooool recording of Metal at its most Metalness possible.

This technique had been copyrighted by a few Black Metalers in the French region so be sure to do it incognito or LLN would be all up in your throat, and you'll be begging for your life.

(fact this is 100% true aside from LLN copyright laws.... or is it. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED)

Not crazy enough to come up with something as brutal as that. And it is truthfully real. A band/person by the name of Vlad Tepes was the first one to do it. There's also one in US where Sunn's singer Malefic (of Xasthur) was put in a coffin inside of a hearse and mic'ed him through it giving it a more destructive, evil, and nightmarish effect. Maleifc is also claustrophobic so yeah, imagine being in his position.

The music can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG97k6DMNVM

No, because Toneport UX1 doesn't have a phantom power for condenser mics. You need a mic preamp that will have phantom power.
Toneport UX2 has phantom power.

For anyone looking for a great mic for about 100 Euro, I"d suggest the RAVEN. The Raven is a Killer Mic for Rock/Metal and it's cheap! Here is the link to a full review.https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/inde...aven_Mic_Review

Hi all!
It goes with out saying you have to figure out what works for you. Screaming into a condenser will require backing off the mic a lot, this will pick up a lot of room tone, if you're recording in your living room or whatever this might not be a great effect. You'll be picking up a lot of reflections, washing machine noise, neighbors dogs etc. I have a few nice condensers, and honestly I don't use them for home recording that much. At home my RE-20 gets way more use. It's a top of the line broadcast dynamic and it kills for metal vocals. Also check out the sure sm7, James hetfield uses them fwiw (the vocals on thriller were done with an sm7 as well). The thing is you can probably swing a top of the line dynamic, or a budget condenser. I really don't care for those chinese guitar center mics, really shrill fizzly high end. Good gear holds it's value, budget stuff doesn't. Pre amp wise an API is dynamite but quite a bit of $$$ if you can make it happen you won't regret it though.

I own an MXL 990 Condenser Mic that is great for Vocals. They are cheap to. You can get one for under 100 Euro with a shock mount. Unbeatable for the price and superior in sound quality to an SM58 IMHO.

You can start without a nice Pre-Amp if budget is an issue. Having a nice PreAmp for your mic will always make it sound better but we are talking about 500 Euro to 1000 Euro for a nice Tube Mic Pre Amp. If your Budget is 100 Euro, you can pretty much forget about adding a nice pre-amp. I think some of the responders missed the budget constraint.

Here is a pic of the MXL studio condenser mic (requires Phantom Power of course as it's a condenser!)

Choosing a mic always depends on what and who you are going to record. From my experience the best mic that I tried for growling & screaming is the Shure Sm-7. It a dynamic mic very used for rock & metal. However it is more expensive than the SM 58. So, maybe the 58 would be a good option if the priority is to record screaming voices.
