MS have put up service pack 3 for all of us luddites on XP - available here. Download is about 350 Mb so be warned.

On a different note - why I hate windows (part 98). Today Xp decided that I've made a major hardware change on my pc (I haven't changed any hardware for months) and so have to re-authorise XP. No problem but because I've done it in the past I have to phone the service centre to do this. (ie They want me to confirm verbally that I'm not multiple installing etc.) Fine, not an issue - phone the toll free number - call centre is down. OK I'll phone the toll number - aargh that is down as well dry.gif mad.gif and I tried at various times for 12 hours.

Ok go to workaround no. 1 = phone a MS call centre in a different country (they probaby all route to a single call centre anyway). That works but the line quality is so rubbish that I can't hear the guy. Automated instructions are fine though - but that's before MS re-route your call to the centre. Try again later - still rubbish. Try again later - still rubbish. Funnily enough our phone line is crystal clear on all other calls rolleyes.gif . Get the trans continental phone link sorted MS dry.gif !

Workaround no. 2 = log a service report and complain about no line to 'national' call number. MS response - your request will be processed as non business priority therefore waiting time of +3 days. Time window to authorise XP - 72 hours (yes I know you can do it after that but still...) mad.gif .

For MS - as someone with a legit copy of XP I find your authorisation system a complete pain in the backside. I've already stopped using MS Office for similar reasons. Stop treating your legit customers like this or lose them. mad.gif

I'm down 100% with you man, Microsoft is a dinosaur that will be extinct soon, so we might as well use their products for some time until all our apps be online, only 10-15 years max to go biggrin.gif

Try some user modified XP like Windows UE 6 (there is a 7 but it is said that has virus) the others UE like 8, 9 are not official (microsoft prompted the mod maker to stop)

I'm in complete agreement with you here.
It's no wonder people resort to using pirated XP-copies. It's not because they dont want to pay for it, it's probably because it saves alot of unessessary work.

I have had my share of problems with all versions of Windows, but not as many as some. But that is what I do mainly is take care of Windows problems. I have had to reactivate XP due to bad hard drives or motheboards on machines many times and never had any problems. Of course I am in the U.S. and know how to BS with the best of tech support and get right to the person I need. I only wish I had the same luck with the local phone company. I have installed XP SP3 on a few machines at work and I am waiting for someone to report a problem with one of them before I do the rest. So far so good.
I recently put together the system I am on now and bought Vista Ultimate. It is running fine after a few glitches. I do not recommend upgrading any XP system. Go to Vista when you have to or you are ready to upgrade your PC, but not until. Vista works fine on a dual core or better and as much RAM as you can cram inside, but I really do not see the need for it. XP did and still does all I need and if MS suddenly becomes perfect, I am going to have to find a new line of work.

I can do nothing but agree.
While doing the WGA check the service lost it's connection to the MS servers and because of that it decided I had a bogus XP installation.
It told me to do a manual WGA re-evaluation and re-register online but that did'nt work either so I was told to call a phone support number.
Having been through that hazzle before I did'nt bother. I hacked my current installation. Great way to treat paying customers. The only ones who doesn't risk to have to go through this is those who use a properly cracked pirated copy. I think this went out of sync with the intenion of copy protection somewhere huh.gif
There are versions of those that contain latest SP and all patches since that and all the latest common drivers so you don't have to patch it for 2 hours and some reboots before your done. You don't even have to reboot once. When the install is done, you are done and the computer is up and running.
I'd rather see that service delivered from MS sad.gif

There is another side of the medal here....

Microsoft knows that Vista didn't exceed expectations. I don't say that Vista doesn't sell, it does, but it is not THAT big seller (or technology breaker FTM) as they so pompously marketed. So we have very slow transition from XP to Vista and Microsoft is suffering great losses because of this. BECAUSE OF THIS XP is purposely updated to be harder to maintain so more people will transfer to Vista instead. Fortunately most of us know computers pretty well and are aware of that fact so we can stay out of MS dirty market tricks.
