Heavy Metal has long suffered the slings and arrows of nearly every sort. It’s been condemned as the music of the devil and written off as an art form. Yet, it lives. Also, recent studies show that Metal has many positive benefits in terms of student performance. I can create a cathartic experience, it can motivate, it can transcend. Of course, those of us who already know these things are not shocked. To wit, lets take a closer look.

CHANGE IN PERSPECTIVE:
Metal Music came in to being as an act of pure rebellion. It has always stood against authority of any kind. It represents a rejection of certain normative ideas and behaviors. Thus is has been seen as a negative influence. However, it can, in fact, lead to a new awareness among the faithful who listen to the genre. It can be a very positive factor during difficult times in anyones life. It can provide solace, strength and sanity.

INVICTUS CATHARSIS
For many students, there is a great deal of frustration that they have to deal with internally. They are the subordinate in the “student teacher” relationship and depending on how unbalanced that relationship is, it can create serious stress on the part of the student. Metal music can provide a path to catharsis for students who feel trapped, and or powerless in their situation. Further, Metal music can focus negative thoughts/feeling and allow them expression in a constructive way. A mosh pit is a great way to work off some steam. Also, just headbanging can be a release of stress. Even the act of just listening can have the same effect.

MOTIVATIONAL METAL
Students can sometimes get bored. They become simply tired. Being a student can be tedious and boring. Metal provides excitement, metal can help focus the mind, metal can get you revved up and ready to go. If a student needs a bit of a kick in the pants, Metal can be the answer. It can get a student out of bed in the morning. Provide a burst of energy to get through a tedious task, provide a goal to be looked forward to at the end of a long day, in short, Metal motivates.

COGNITIVE IMPROVEMENT
Studies show that people who listen to Metal develop better focus, better reaction time, greater facility of memory, a host of cognitive improvements. It’s not that these impacts are only related to metal music, but that they are pronounced among Metal fans. It’s the ability to form strong emotional bonds with the music that creates many of the positive effects. The themes in metal seem to support this emotional bonding and thus increase the related effects. Also, students who listen to metal are more motivated and more physically active.

In conclusion, I hope that this short article has given some insight into the powerful and positive impacts that Heavy Metal can provide to students of any age. To be sure, nearly any type of music can have positive impacts on a student. Yet, it’s Metal, with it’s specific intensity that seems to provide the most bang for the buck. For Metal fans who got through school by using Metal as a motivator, this is old news. To those new to the faith, this may be a revelation. Embrace it.

QUESTION: HAS METAL MOTIVATED YOU IN THE PAST?
