Hi guys,

So I've been keeping myself to my resolutions and have been playing for 1-2 hours each day, BUT...
My fingers become quite warm and my hand kind off hurts at the moment.
Not a problem I'd say, but my playing is hardly getting better, maybe even worse

Anyone here with similar experiences? any suggestions on what to do about it?

This can happen if you don't stretch before and after your guitar sessions and also if you are not relaxed while playing. I recommend checking and applying this:

From what you say it sounds quite normal. You should get used to it. Just make sure you do not start from "full power" when you begin your practice everyday. Your body will get used to. The more you play the harder you are able to play so even if you do it quite regular you might feel some muscle issues. They should go away unless you'll push yourself to a new limits everyday smile.gif

DO NOT PLAY TO THE POINT OF PAIN!!!!!!!!!

I can't stress this enough. You get one pair of arms/hands. You mess em up, you are out of luck and looking at surgery. So STOP!!!!

Now then smile.gif Let's sort this.

1.)ALWAYS warmup with some light stretching of your fingers/hand/arms/etc. smile.gif

2.)Reduce the pressure you are using to fret and pick. I see this all the time. Folks pick and fret too hard and burn out their hand before they are done playing sad.gif

3.)ALWAYS do a "cool down" session of light stretches and use a single ice cube on your forearm tendons on your left arm underside. It will reduce swelling and inflammation.

4.)Take a single aspirin after a hard practice. It will also reduce inflammation.

Take care of your arms smile.gif

Todd

Thanks Todd!

I have quite a history with chronic issues with musclepains, throat, etc.
so I know how hard it is to get back to a healthy state once something is overused.

Thanks again for the feedback! smile.gif

Hi mate,

Over the years I had this problem many times too. And always it was my own fault. I read the tips from Todd and he is so right!! Although I know it's wrong I very often use too much pressure not only killing my fingers but also, sometimes , playing out of tune! And that's nasty. Thanks to GMC I'm aware of this and constantly I'm trying to avoid.
Another problem is my own enthousiasm, motivation and drive. Basically that's a gift but sometimes my mind wants more than my body can handle. Like Todd said : if you feel pain: Stop! Pain can never be a goal in guitarplaying. If your hands are still very sore from the previous "workout", don't go into another 2 hour mindblowing speedplaying, ignoring pain! Have a day rest instead or play relaxed some licks . Next day, recuperation will hopefully done it's job and you will be stronger and faster than before.
It's like sport, training and especially the way you train is crucial, but so is resting and recuperation. wink.gif

Well thanks smile.gif I think you are spot on. It's often just enthusiasm that can make us bear down a bit harder and it does change the tune/tonal character of what is being fretted. You really gotta work at using a light enough touch not to wear out your hands before you are done for the day and to keep them from getting carpal tunnel syndrom/repetetive stress injury!
