Got rid of the closet I mentioned in another thread, and now I have a lot more space. My dad will help me put wallpaper etc up smile.gif then I'll have a nice corner for recording videos without stumbling over camera tripods and what not.

Not really, as I have been laying low with my playing (https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=60717&st=0 excepted of course!)

But I am following this thread with interest, I still haven't gotten over how cool it is that with the help of a small room and a modern computer you can create amazing one-man-band songs πŸ‘Œ

It's given me space enough for a bassplayer to be in here too if I ever found one to play with - along with a drummer. Space enough for a 3 man band! Not bad smile.gif

My first line of thought is to make it into a video recording corner though, maybe with a green screen at some point. I haven't entirely decided on that yet.

Posted by: Potsau Feb 19 2020, 09:16 PM

Last week I have made a mobile Version. I can record any instrument with that, except drums. All with my phone. Or carry it to a lake or in a Bar. Drink beer and record.

Next step is to get some do it yourself acoustic panels on the wall, like I have in other places in the room.

Congrats! I'm a big fan of Mobile Recording. I have a couple of phone audio interfaces that I've been using. It's got amazing quality and is smalll enough to fit anywhere! Here is a quick demo of my phone based rig. The audio interace is also a footswitch that changes patches on the phonee running amplitube!

I have a simple setup. Amps In my bedroom and I’m using amplitube4 I think it’s pretty good for a amp sim.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Mar 11 2020, 07:22 PM

Nice rig! I see you have a subwoofer, good call! It's very handy for hearing things that are easy to miss using only smaller monitors. That setup is the foundation of the modern studio. A laptop, monitors, interface and bam. Ready to record. I've reduced the amount of gear in my studio over recent years as I noticed I was not using most of it. It was mostly just pretty blinking lights. I like my rack and guitar cab but I rarely use them for recording. I do use my little 5 watt hotone amp when testing new pedals and put it through my cab. But I have not used my big rack mount stuff in quite some time. Not since I got the Ampero pedal. It does everything my rack did and it's got a food controller built in. For everything else I use OVERLOUD THU. When I record without overloud I regret it as I can't change anything after the fact. I have to re record. Nice setup!!

New update smile.gif

Posted by: klasaine Jun 3 2020, 06:21 PM

I finally had to get a home recording set up going.
Thankfully I can record my amps at home and I do have some decent mics. I was using a small pair of a studio monitors as stereo speakers so I re-purposed them back to their main purpose. I also have a good mic pre/EQ that I would take to sessions as well as a an older load box and a small modeler (Iridium).
What I really need is a more powerful computer laugh.gif

This is all literally in my garage.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 4 2020, 05:31 AM

NICE!! The UA is a killer interface to be sure. Can run hardware assisted versions of very high end plugins with neglible impact on the cpu. Nice setup!

Finally getting my home studio rig going again. I might swap out my hd monitor to a newer one.

That was the initial attraction. That and also that it (UAd 'Arrow') comes with UAs daw and 12 free UA plugins. Their interfaces, even the bottom level model that I got, seem expensive initially but the ease of use and sound quality was what I needed to get up and running fast on my current and relatively low powered computer. With the DSP in the interface I can track with one or two fx or even an amp plugin with zero latency (1 or2 ms). Because I'm mostly recording my amps, I wanted the option of having various mic pres that I can record through and "print" with no latency via my dual core, i5 macbook.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 6 2020, 01:11 AM

Good call! smile.gif That's what is so cool about the UA interface. It offloads processing to the interface so you can still get top notch plugins with very little drag on the CPU. Using plugins like that in NATIVE form would require a lot more headroom on the cpu to keep it from glitching/laggin.

I finally added some headphone stands that mount to the wall.

HOW MANY FOLKS OUT THERE JUST TOSS THEIR HEADPHONES WHERE EVER THEY LAND?

These are cheap, about $5 each and can be mounted with screws or adhesive. Handy! Keeps them off the floor etc. and out of the way when not in use.

Also finally added a mini fridge and just put the printer on top of it. I almost threw the printer away, but now and then once just needs a printer.

IT's finally coming along. I'm tracking for a new project called ARKASA with my German friends that I met in a previous collab on the song MOMENTO MORI.

Well, I did stick a nail into the side of a table ...

Also, and probably only for folks in the States, these Monoprice headphones are pretty great for just $17 ...
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=8323

Detachable cable too.
Monoprice has a lot of accessory type music/audio/video gear that's decent quality and at great prices.
It pays to order a few things as they don't do any free shipping.

That is a great price for those cans. My cans with detacable xlr cables were almost $100 each. I think you paid less for your headphone stand as well wink.gif

One good thing about the move is I finally have decent Internet speed compared to where I was. I used to be thrilled with 40 Mbps downstream which now seems just awful. I've lived with crap internet for years.

BIg difference is that yours costs about twice what most of ours do just based on the NEVE looking piece and the UAD interface. That's some very nice gear! Not to mention the nice mics and guitars!

Finally getting my FX/Rack hooked up as well. Sadly I can't find my wonderful Iconnectivity 4+ Interface!!!! I have ordered a 3rd gen scarlett to replace it. Had to send the 3rd gen solo back as I realized I need two xlr inputs, one for micing a cab and one for a vocal mic to make guitar vids.

Posted by: klasaine Jul 4 2020, 02:54 AM

The Neve looking thing is a 'clone' of a 1073 (Warm Audio WA273EQ) that I've had for awhile and relatively speaking, not expensive. I used to take that to sessions in home or small studios that didn't have much outboard gear. It's one of the most classic ways to treat a mic'd guitar amp. *It's great on vocals too ... anything really. The Two Notes Torpedo I got just before the lockdown. That is a cool piece of gear. I have all these great amps that I can once again crank up and play at midnight. And I have now discovered IRs. Yes, I know I'm totally late to the party laugh.gif Fun stuff!

I did buy a couple of mics - a condenser and a ribbon. I had a few mics from way back. A couple of 57s and an AKG C-1000 which I've found is great on acoustic.

Obviously, because I'm old, most of those amps and the guitars I've had for a long time. Seriously, I own gear that is considered "vintage" that I bought new.

But, I will need a more powerful computer if I want to do anything more than lay guitar parts on to other people's tunes. The reason I went with the Universal Audio interface is because it uses it's own DSP.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jul 4 2020, 05:44 AM

The UA is a great choice for any studio imho. Great sounding unit and amazing sounding plugins. the good news on new computers is that prices are pretty low just now on just about everything since nobody seems to be buying anything as so many people are not working. If you go PC you can get a pretty powerful laptop for not much money. As a stop gap, you could always buy a "vintage" macbook air, anything 2012 or later for maybe $300 with eight gig of ram and a 128 gb ssd. It will run reaper/logic etc. Those machines are not that different, but for the video card, from the macbook air 13 that are on sale today. You can still buy the dual core i5 and same specs, it just costs wads more now. I bought an old macbook air with those specs as my backup incase my old 2012 macbook pro (which I built from parts) just bites the dust one day.

Gonna stick with Mac but yeah, a refurb is probably the way I'll go.
Like I said, for what I need to do, my Mac is running fine. If I want to get into tracking and mixing more than just me - then I'll need more power.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jul 5 2020, 10:00 PM

Has your mac given you the "out of resources" error when tracking? Looks pretty new. Have you had trouble tracking or mixing on it?

No. It's a 2017 mbp but it's only a dual core i5 with 8gb of ram ... and I can't add more, as what's there is soldered in.
I'm doing OK for now. The fans will spin pretty good when tracking for a couple of hours but if I point my portable AC unit right at it, it seems to handle everything a lot better.

Hey Zen,

It's a limited edition run. The model name is RG752MFS VFD. There were only made 39 world wide, if I recall correctly. However you may be lucky to find one. It's a good guitar, but also a bit pricey and it does have one flaw that would make me hesitant in buying it - the fret markers are almost invisible and very difficult to see. They are abalone and on the neck you can barely see them.

sorry for sticking my nose so close in, is there a specific reason for putting that piece of cardboard under the mackbook and the interface? i thought it might be for insulation and avoiding circuit loops, but then i realized that the table is already made of wood so that got me wondering unsure.gif

Ha, ha! No.
That table used to be, until the end of March, the "work bench" in my garage and I put that hunk of cardboard on it to protect the table from oil, solder, grease, solvent, screwdriver marks, etc. I can also write on it.
I just left it on there when it turned into my 'studio'. Mostly so I can scrawl notes to myself.
The photo makes it look grungier than it really is.

Thanks Todd, I have you to thank for much of the inspiration in the beginning. These monitors you recommended are still running strong!

I had a pair of those and I kick myself every day for selling them. Thats why I suggested them to you as I'd used them and I trusted them. I wish I had them as my second pair right now to have a B pair to test mixes. I bought and eris 4.5 pair and I HATE them. But I suppose they are meant to sound like crap to mimic crappy playback systems. They make my skin crawl. They sounded great loud, great quiet. they were just really solid monitors. I'm happy I could be of help! Your studio has really come a long way!!!!! Looks amazing.

Besides cleaning up there's not really much on the horizon besides guitars I miss that I used to own (Yamaha, Fender Strat), and maybe getting a bass.

Like gabe are you using OBS to do more than one input at a time with video?

I had it set up for streaming at one point, with the possibility to switch between "scenes", videos, angles and showing different things on my computer. Only yesterday I started having problems with OBS, and I ended up resetting all my settings and scenes to make it work again, so right at this moment I don't have that capability, but I usually am able to do so. I haven't used it since I stopped streaming quite some time back though.

Was talking to BEN today about home studios and he linked me back to this page and I'd forgotten about FIREBALLS studio update posts. This is a walk back through time!!! I thought this would be a great place to put new pix of your home studio and maybe the latest video you recently shared?

ANYONE ELSE GOT UPDATED HOME STUDIO PICS?

I have been relegated to a small corner of the Attic. it does the trick though. Basically my PC with an Edirol UA-101 Interface, a pair of headphones, a camera and my TV. Need to pickup some monitors at some point. On the other side of the room I have a Marshall DSL40CR out to a Traynor DHX 2x12 Dark horse cabinet and some SM57's.

What a great collection of pics. Very cool evolution man! πŸ‘

Thanks! It's a work in progress. Yea man,, the TV is a 4K Samsung 43". Works great with the PC. Running an RTX 2070 Super in the system too, so gaming at 1440p is a great bonus. πŸ‘Œ

I need to upgrade to a better computer monitor t oo. I use a 26" TV and a 19 inch actual computer screen that is 13-14 years old or so by now. I don't have endless amount of room, but could possible have two 24 or possibly 27 at a push, but I'm not sure about the latter.

Hi smile.gif
Lots of nice setups here.
Mine has certainly gone through many changes - some more drastic than others. I've also moved a few times. I'll just let the pictures do the talking. wink.gif
What progression, inspiring watching you Grow brother

Here's my current setup. This is the most honest "look" when I'm just sitting here. Nice and moody. Great for creativity or some gaming!

But in my latest video, you can see what I do with it when I have all my lights on.

Awesome track and playing. It was so cool to see your cohort Thomas Burton is from the same Province as myself in Canada, Nova Scotia. Small world man. Bravo!

Mine is just a standard HDTV 1920x1080 but that's as high as I need it for music production so it's ok wink.gif It's a 40 incher I think? Been a while since I got it. Been a great monitor! The audio monitors are KALI AUDIO LP6 which are the best deal on earth at $300 a pair! If you get a pair of monitors I would highly suggest the LP6 as they are the best bang for the buck ever imho smile.gif

I can't fit two 40 inch though, and I really don't think I can go back to just 1. I had my old TV (37 inch) there + the 19 inch at one point and it was a struggle size wise, so I'd imagine two 24 or 27 would be ideal smile.gif

However im gonna be father for the Second time so i have to split the room but for a good purpose smile.gif

Super congrats on being a father again and on your studio! Looks like a great space. The little one will get exposure to music from a very young age by being around when you practice/play/compose etc. it is said to help babies brains to grow, when they are exposed to music at a young age smile.gif

Thanks man smile.gif
Yes i Saw a program about it also one day.
That the brains develop more quickly.
Very nice to see. Ill hope one day my daughter will make music but i will see.
Do you have a lot of musicians in your family?

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jul 11 2021, 09:27 PM

They say music runs in family smile.gif I suppose many traits follow along family lines. I do come from a long line of both musicians and teachers. Teaching also seems to run in families smile.gif

I saw a very interesting program about "passive listening" and young children. Basically, just listening to music, even before the child can understand it, helps to stimulate the brain and strengthen neuron pathways. So it's a positive thing to expose children to all kinds of music as it helps their brains to develop!

Also, exposing children to other languages can stimulate brain development as well. Just letting a child listen to a movie in french for example, can be a positive thing. Young minds adapt well to language and to music. Really, to anything. Young minds have a high degree of neuroplasticity. So the more music, foreign language, the better smile.gif I think it's great that your young one's place will be the same room as your studio! It will give many opportunities to be exposed to music that is being played/written/learned etc.

Congrats again!

Todd

Yeah thats nice so you are also raised with it. Then it be comes more easy to pick out an instrument and start playing i guess smile.gif

Yes i Saw that one too. There is also a vid in youtube where you can see how neural pathways start and develop and you can see it. Also how it dissapears if you Dont practice anymore.

Abiut the plasticity of a brain at young age. I think that is why if you start playing from a young age you can be so damn good because your brain works so great then without have to think so much.
Sometimes i wishes that i started playing earlier but its always easy to say afterwards smile.gif

Yeah smile.gif Music was always part of my life since before I could walk. MY folks loved music and both are musicians so music was on pretty much non stop. They both played piano and I was hopeless at it. Much to their chagrin, our local piano teacher declared me "unteachable" smile.gif Same thing went for the Violin Teacher and the Flute Teacher, sadly. I was the only child in the family who didn't end up getting trained on piano, flute and violin. I had to tech myself in the end which worked out )

It does hep when you can start young, especially if you are exposed to a lot of muisc at a young age. There are lots of great youtube vids on the subject of music and brain development. Starting them young helps their brains develop and gives them a bit of a leg up on getting better at music smile.gif

I grew up with my dad listening to a lot of music, but sort of being really tone-deaf. He's certainly not a musician and can't clap in time. I remember doing lights at a school show when I was 15 or 16, and I was sort of high up, able to watch all the parents as they clapped along to the song...except my dad who clapped on the wrong beats or off-beat from everyone else smile.gif

My mom don't really have an interest in music either and always complain she can't find the 1-2-3-4 in music when listening to it, even though I've explained it multiple times.

Maybe that explains my love for odd time signatures though wink.gif

your timing is spot on so you get double portion then smile.gif

It's interesting regarding time signatures, because my approach to writing music is "melody first" (without a beat), and I never have a pulse in my head as such when I write. Sure, there can be strong notes that are accented and such, but I don't constantly feel a 4/4 pulse for instance. I might hear a melody in my head with varied note values, notate it and figure out that it's in 11/8 or similar, and then I'll write the drums around that melody. I have some friends that more "constantly and consciously think in 4/4", but I honestly don't, for better or worse. It can add something to get into a 4/4 groove from something odd though - a bit of both smile.gif

As said, I might a melody where some people would "force" it into a 4/4 bar or at least hear it that way. Sometimes I'll feel that a note naturally needs linger for longer or that a rest needs to be 5/8 instead of 2/4. It's very varied.

Here's an interesting take on it, from around 4:00:

So to answer your question, I don't really think I have one. It depends on the melody. Sometimes the melody will fit a 5/4, sometimes a 7/8, sometimes 11/8 or 15/16...

Nice method to write from the melody. Then you can afterwards see what time signature you used.
But if you then play it do you count it in your head or just go witj the flow?

I like syncopated rhythms like the clave or shifting accents in a funk track. Then with the funk the time signature is 4/4 but the feel is very different smile.gif

I suppose I figure out the melody length in my head if I need to. I.e. (Q=Quarter, E=Eight, S=Sixteen) "E+Q+S+S+E+Q = 7/8", but otherwise notating things is very quick for me. I've spent a lot of time with Guitar Pro over the years, so I can quickly notate my ideas and have a very good understanding of how to do smile.gif

I kinda made it sound like I never write in 4/4. I absolutely do, cause I know it can "groove" better, but my natural instinct is to write whatever melody I feel/hear, both as rhythm and more solo stuff, and not have it sit inside a strict rhythmic template.

I've attached one of my songs notated in Guitar Pro just as a showcase smile.gif

When I was working on my album of 10 songs, it was one of the 3 songs that I never even recorded a demo for, except for a small snippet:

I don't think I have more than that. Maybe something buried somewhere. I'll give it a look.
