I've been listening to NIGHTWISH recently having found them almost by accident after running across WITHIN TEMPTATION and I"ve got to say I"m impressed. The singer was replaced a bit back and I"m working through their old stuff first. Here is a Vid to give you a general idea. Finnish/Symphonic/Gothic Metal fronted by a talented operatic "Lyric Soprano" (Her voice is so powerful it can be heard over a live orchestra)

The album this is from didn't even chart in the states. It's like digging for gold finding good music on the web/youtube smile.gif

I never really liked Nightwish, all the songs sounded the same "emo-epicness". Older stuff were sometimes okay, but all in all was never impressed.

Todd, you might like the stuff Tarja Turunen (the replaced singer) did solo after the break-up as well. Symphonic metal is not my cup of tea, but I have seen the german band "Leaves' Eyes" who do a similar thing, and they were pretty good when they opened for Kamelot last year.

yeah! Tarja is living in Argentina now, I've met her at Avenged Sevenfold's concert some days ago. smile.gif Their keyboardist is an awesome composer and arranger. I could see them live here when Tarja was still the singer and they did an amazing show. Great band!

I have checked out some of her post Nightwish work as well and am also impressed. Her voice is just astounding. Come to find out she went to a very snooty Opera school in Germany no less! (There's Germany again, keeps coming up, I've got to relocate) and is a fully qualified Opera singer. Not a small task for any vocalist. I guess I really respect the precision and control in her voice. I can just hear decades of practice/effort every time she opens her mouth.

I got in to classical/opera/baroque music a bit when I took some classical guitar lessons a while back. It is a bit of an acquired taste. I hated almost all operatic/symphonic vibed music and was a bit more focused on speed/thrash/technical metal, and such before that.

It seems like each new bit of music I study shows up later in my playlists somehow smile.gif I guess it's natural. Sometimes it's unexpected though. I went all the way back to "The End of All Hope" video and liked that too. But the clips from the cheeseball vampire flick didn't thrill me. Oh, and yea, I like Leaves Eyes too smile.gif

I thought I read that somewhere smile.gif Evidently she is pretty popular there? I also saw that she has done several tours now without Nightwish (Lucky Europeans!).

The Billboard 100 is almost completely dominated by pop music, which is marketed towards the masses. Bands like Nightwish really aren't "mainstream" so to speak, so its really tough for them to compete against pop stars. Besides, pop stars and metal bands are two completely different concepts. The big labels look for personalities to play music that has already been written. The performers are more like salesmen, they're selling the product produced by the labels. On the other hand, metal bands have a product, and are just looking for a distributor tongue.gif

I don't think that she is most popular in Argentina than in Finland but she married with an Argentinian guy so that's why she lives here (I think).

Yeah, Nightwish is good stuff smile.gif My vocalist is totally into symphonic female fronted metal so he's into all the stuff like Nightwish, Within Temptation, Leave's Eyes, Epica and a more Celtic sounding band, Midnattsol. I'm sure it's got nothing to do with the pretty women... ooooh no..... wink.gif

I don't have much Nightwish but I recommend the Century Child album.. the album after it, Once, is good too but a little sparkly and light on the production. The latest album with Annete Olzen on vocals is also very good but a little overlong so there's a bit of filler.

Within Temptation I've only heard in Martin's car but was totally impressed with the singer's voice.. she's a total Kate Bush devotee and you can hear it.. I think she's a better all round singer than Tarja smile.gif

Nightwish is great. Im suprised you found them first now - they are famous like... metallica. You should check out the bands Ben wrote as well smile.gif Also I think Haggard is great, although a very different band.

Tarja, although her personality isnt the best, recently did a tour with Kiko Loureiro, which I have heard was really amazing. smile.gif

Nightwish have a great following in the states, I have been listening to them since Wishmaster came out when I was 10. I have seen them twice, once with Tarja and once withe Annette - Both singers add a unique and different personality, which are both beautiful. Both times were amazing shows. Songwriting wise, few bands come close - As much as I love Within Temptation, Tuomas Holopainen's composing skills are on a whole different plane. Empuu is such an underrated guitarist, I love his writing. Marco Hietala - although not always with the band - adds superb bass tone and killer vocals. Jukka Nevalainen was probably my first "favorite" drummer when I was a Kid besides Nicko McBrain.

All in all I love Nightwish, got to meet them a few years back when I bought a VIP pass - Really cool guys/gals. Imaginarium, both the movie and the album look to be pretty killer.

I listened to Nightwish a long time ago. Not sure about today, they are still great I guess, but back in the days when modern symphonic forms of metal were "new" stuff, it was pretty good.

The blindingly Hot female lead vocalists certainly don't hurt smile.gif I'm digging most of what I've been running in to from these bands. Well built, well played, well produced. More than I can say for what passes for music here, E.G. Just Bieber (if you are a fan, please forgive, to each his own)

I like Epica too smile.gif Been a fan since I saw "we will take you with us". Simone Simmons. My oh my. What a voice, what a performer, what a gal!

It maybe a "great" following, but it's certainly a small one. I don't know anyone personally who'se ever heard of them and I know a ton of folks who dig Metal and the like. I started introducing them to friends and they were like "who?" "Is this Opera?" the internet is a great way to find Music. Radio these days seems like one of the worst and mtv a close second.

I know a good amount of people in the states that listen to them - Although there shows tend to stay under 5,000 person venues on average it seems. Whereas in other continents and countries, they sell out 20,000-30,000 seat stadiums.

Well, I guess it makes sense. In the states, Metal and Opera are not two things that put a lot of buts in seats so "Opera Metal" or anything close is going to be an underground thing. Then again, I'm kinda glad Metal is underground in the states as it has cut back on the plethora of lame bands that thought they were "Metal" due to hair style or guitar choice.

Metal seems to be bigger in Europe, isn't is? Here in Argentina, Metal is underground for the local bands excepting 2 bands (Rata Blanca & Almafuerte). Then you have lots of under bands who plays for 100, 200 or 500 persons. However when an international metal band comes here they can play for lots of people, Maiden or Ozzy play for more than 40000 in Stadiums, bands like Dream Theater or Nightwish for 8000, and then you have bands like Symphony X or Sonata Arctica who usually play for 2000 persons.

Lot's of countries in Europe feature very similar situation like you described Gab, and the most developed scene is in North-Eastern parts, specially Scandinavian countries. Biggest and most developed metal fests are also there.
