Pick Size, for beginner struming and arpeggio

Mar 13 2009, 03:53 PM	GMC:er Posts: 147 Joined: 25-June 08 From: Newfoundland, Canada	As a scientist, I decided I would like to find out what pick works for me about 6 months ago - especially after there was a lot of hype about V-picks. So I went out and picked up as many different picks I could find. By no means did I have all the relevant picks out there but I got a pretty good sample. I then tested each pick randomly and played a couple of riffs that I play well mixing them and changing the order of the picks (essentially eliminating as much bias as I could). I used about 6 different measures including brightness, comfort, excessive noise or squeaking, etc. and gave them a rating from 1-5. For strumming (not really something I was focusing on) - I ended up going with the thinner Dunlop nylon (red one I think was 0.67mm). It was the pick I had been using for years along with the 1mm nylon pick. I suspect the choice was perhaps based on experience and ended up going with what was comfortable. For picking (and what I was most interested in), I ended up picking out the V-pick small pointed, followed by the stubby (2mm light purple one I think). Third (tied) was the V-pick screamer and the Jazz III. Obviously suitability of picks are related to one's own style and approach so the order I present is for me only but if you want to have some fun, try a bunch of them and rate them. Or 1.3mm. http://elderly.com/accessories/items/PKPC-1.50.htm It is not wasted money, on all the picks you buy trying to find the one you like. Put a hundred or so in a little bag, it makes a great cat toy, the cat attacks it, swats it around. Don't close the bag, I think part of the game is knocking all the picks out on the rug. I like using the little bags that I get at the dog park, for picking up dog poop, they are just the right size. Of course, an unused one. Just love em! If you like those, have you tried some of the V picks? They are expensive, but if you like those, I bet you would LOVE the V Pick Diamond. 10 bucks though. Expensive cat toys if they don't work out. The material they are made of has a nice sound, that is what makes them special I think. edit: or one of their others, they have all kinds, some maybe $4. some real stubby ones, all kinds. bet you would find one you love, it you like those that you showed.
