GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Make Your Guitar Picks Last Longer

Posted by: Mister_Riff Jun 25 2010, 07:04 AM

Hi GMC,

Just wanted to share this vid with you guys. It's how to sharpen your guitar picks using your carpet. blink.gif (I know it sounds crazy)

I've used this trick on a lot of old plectrums (I use dunlops .73 mm) which had lost all of their sharpness and now they're as good as new. So it's actually a huge money-saver.

Also be sure to check out his other vids wink.gif

P.s. I'm sorry but I couldn't embed this vid

Ahah, funny and useful indeed ! Too bad I have no carpet at home... smile.gif

Posted by: ZakkWylde Jun 25 2010, 08:57 AM

Holy **** this works perfectly! This little trick will save me a lot of money (I have an average of 4 dull picks/rehearsal)

Posted by: Fre Jun 25 2010, 11:01 AM

That is a cool trick indeed. biggrin.gif
Too bad I have no carpet, but I think it will work with sandpaper too.

wow! nice tip!

Posted by: Skewlbuzz Jun 25 2010, 04:59 PM

That's so awesome!

Makes me wonder how long ones carpet will last though smile.gif

Posted by: thefireball Jun 25 2010, 05:28 PM

wow! I wonder if this works with acrylic v-picks....

Posted by: Azzaboi Jun 25 2010, 07:23 PM

I use this already, learnt it when learning pick scraping, it's great if you do a lot of pick scrapes to repair. Melts it smooth with friction too!

On the V-Pick website, he tells us to use a knife to sharpen it when it becomes dull smile.gif It takes a little getting used it, but works great smile.gif

I always sharpen my picks, even when they are new. Gives a fine point and adds control, great tip!

yike, i'm afraid of that....i might mess it up. but heck...i have many of those picks!

hahah.....

I see a GMC funny....

It's like your friend walks into your room. He looks at your floor and exclaims, "What happened to your carpet?!" (The carpet is all frayed and messed up)
You reply with, "oh, just sharpening my picks."

haha... biggrin.gif i thought of that when my dad told me to be sure not to snag the carpet. I does work after all with vpicks... COOL!

Posted by: ZakkWylde Jun 26 2010, 10:00 AM

The cool thing is that it DOESN'T mess up the carpet! Not at all!

Posted by: Mister_Riff Jun 26 2010, 10:16 AM

Really cool huh laugh.gif

Somehow makes me wonder if there are other "tricks" like this around ....

Keep on sharpening those picks! tongue.gif

Posted by: Lian Gerbino Jun 26 2010, 02:31 PM

yeah, I also do this, but I use a stone... smile.gif

I never knew about this carpet trick smile.gif Hopefully it won't shred the carpet of "over sharpening" smile.gif

haha. totally. or she walks in to the hubby sharpening his pick just as the carpet catches on fire!

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Jun 27 2010, 03:15 AM

Hhaha, yeah, one day someone will come into my room, and see black arced holes on the carpet and ask "what's that", and I will say "you don't want to know" laugh.gif

jsut kidding, nice tip, I used to sharpen my picks all the time, now I play with anything, I don't really care smile.gif

Posted by: Azzaboi Jun 27 2010, 04:22 AM

Mum: It's good to see you finally cleaning the carpet.
Aaron: Yeah, it was getting too dirty to sharpen my pick!
(catches fire)

Posted by: thefireball Jun 27 2010, 04:46 AM

The thing is getting the pick even on both sides. My little 12 year old brother helped me. biggrin.gif

Just sharpened this one. My brother couldn't believe it. Show I demonstrated it for him. I wear this pick around my neck, so I HAD to get it straight. biggrin.gif

EDIT: Still not perfect, but it's close enough. happy.gif

Great. Unfortunately, that won't work with me, I lost my pick every 2 months.
Any device against pick loss, like pick alarm?

Posted by: Azzaboi Jun 28 2010, 08:07 PM

I loose my picks too, but find them again in the most oddest places like inside the back of my amp and even inside my pillow case!

Pick Alarm: Get a pet ferret, they go around stealing everything and hiding it under your bed. Find 'lost' wallets, shoes, socks, and guitar picks! Getting it back is the tricky bit, do it when he's not looking ... else your pick might end up too sharp trying to tug it off him!

Posted by: ZakkWylde Jun 28 2010, 08:25 PM

I buy my picks in 100-packs these days. It saves money compared to buying them seperately and you don't ave to worry about not having any picks for months (takes some time to loose 100 picks^^)
