GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Emperor

Anyone familiar with the band Emperor? I picked up "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk". It's amazing. I asked a buddy about these guys and apparently the guy that formed the band started doing this stuff at 16???? Anyways, just checking if anyone else had given them a listen, what your thoughts are on the guitars and the overall orchestration (which in my opinion is MAGNIFICENT), and if you'd recommend another album.

Uncreator and VinceG, I'm expecting some input here. biggrin.gif

Bleh, I hate emperor and their crappy synth desotrying the music. Some of the old emperor is really good, if they only removed the synth piece of crap.
(please dont get offended etc. just my opinion)

laugh.gif No offense taken. I just recently got back into metal after a looooong hiatus so I'm just fishing around for any kind of input/recommendations, good or bad. I think these guys are fantastic musicians but yeah, the synth can be a bit much.

No offence man, but i thought they SUCKED.hated the screaming, hated the synth.in my opinion, they cuold have been better if they started singing and stopped screaming, and took out the synth and slowed the music down a touch.(remember, no offence man biggrin.gif , just my opinion).

The really old emperor is some really really great black metal, even though there is a synth there, but not as much synth as the newer stuff. I wish no one ever even started using synth in metal, I hate it. It's totally crap, I cant stand it, YUCK! Of course, maiden use synth, and yes the new stuff sucks, but I like it how they use it in, for instace, seventh son of a seventh son. they dont use it that much. But man when I hear stuff like dimmu borgir, in flames and newer emperor, OVSEAHOVUASHAEWPJFJAE BLEH!! I hate synth in metal.

And remember, just my opinion etc. etc.

So true, synths can really destroy music. (With the exception of Burzum and some Arcturus:x)

Burzum dont really use it in his songs, or, he do got some songs with ONLY synth, and they are amazing. He even got 2 albums with synth only, they are quite cool.

I like the later stuff by Emperor better. It is a little less "black metal-ish".

Pfft, for instance my favourite song with him, Det som En Gang Var has a lot of synth in it, and it's not one of his ambient songs.

Ah yes, hvis lyset tar oss. But Varg uses the synth in a whole different way, and the sound of the synth sounds different aswell, and of course the sound of the whole album in general. Emperor, dimmu borgir, etc. use the synth as a "main instrument", and it is extremely horrible, imo.

And that's why he knows how to use the synth properly, I didn't say he used it like them, I just said he knew how to use it well. biggrin.gif

Personally, I like 'IX Equilibrium' and 'Promethus - Discipline of Fire & Demise' the best.

I never had a problem with the synth, sometimes it seemed a littel to much, but it never bothered me, it was just part of there sound i guess.

You might like Ihsan's side project, "Ihsahn" or the band him and his wife are in, "Peccatum"
