GMC Forum _ Sinisa Cekic _ Summertime Audio Collaboration !

Posted by: Sinisa Cekic Jul 12 2011, 09:15 PM

Well guys, my first audio collaboration !!!

I chose this song because it reminds me of warm summer evenings, somewhere along the lake, sea, ocean...
I would like to join me and play some fine and slow phrases, nothing spectacular technically, just relax and give me a couple of your lazy tones ..

Here's the backing:
 Summertime_67_bpm.mp3 ( 1.3MB ) : 423

The main key is Cmajor, so you can use C major scale,C major pentatonic or a parallel A minor/minor pentatonic,A blues scale !

Upload AUDIO takes here,
One with backing.
One with just your solo channel isolated.

Collab is open to everyone and anyone,of course smile.gif !

Deadline : 10th August !

Posted by: K1R Jul 12 2011, 09:21 PM

Man, the backing is awesome! I'm definitely in smile.gif

Posted by: WillJam Jul 12 2011, 10:39 PM

nice man!
I will join the Collab!

Do you even want a video-file, or is it "just" a audio-collab ?

Posted by: Sinisa Cekic Jul 12 2011, 10:44 PM

Audio only, for a start ! If it turned out well - why not !

Posted by: Gitarrero Jul 13 2011, 07:10 PM

Great backing, I'm in!

I'm in Sinisa!
Great backing. I went ahead and recorded two takes. Both are very similar, but I used different tones for each. Use your favorite for the collab (both if you want.)...

Version A:
 20110718_SummertimeCollabA_nobt.mp3 ( 2.17MB ) : 259
 20110718_SummertimeCollabA_wbt.mp3 ( 2.17MB ) : 295

Version B:
 20110718_SummertimeCollabB_nobt.mp3 ( 2.17MB ) : 250
 20110718_SummertimeCollabB_wbt.mp3 ( 2.17MB ) : 272

I can't hear the audio backing I'm afraid (waiting for a flight at Schipol Airport at the moment),
but I am all about summertime biggrin.gif
And I haven't recorded anything in ages, so it's about time I started recording again...

Sign me up, and I'll give it a go.
Hopefully I still got some rhythm in me biggrin.gif

HI, I'd love to be a part of this, backing is so cruisy. How does this work, its my first time? Do I upload my take of the entire backing, and from there you cut it up and mix it with others?

Cheers

Ok mate,

yes, as you said, upload your shot along with backing! I need it for reference..
Second - can you upload only guitar track, without backing ?! Which software you use to record ?

I use Reaper through POD farm. This will be a challenge for me, I can play different styles but slow and soulful isn't really one of them. I will give it my best shot and upload my attempt.... haha

Cheers

Yeah. The first couple of times doing a recording will be a challenge, but you can do it with Pod Farm and Reaper for sure.

1. Download backing track.
2. Create a new project in reaper and copy the backing into a reaper track.
3. Record your take. For this since you're using Pod farm, you are going to want to capture your raw (un amped/processed) guitar signal. I used to use Pod Farm a lot. I also used the Pod X3 to capture the audio. It can send the raw guitar signal over usb while you monitor through the pod. I'm not sure exactly how to monitor the Pod Farm processing while recording, but I'm sure it will be possible as I've heard others talk about doing just that.
4. Jam to the backing about 10000 times biggrin.gif until you've got something going that you think is pretty decent.
5. Record it about 100 times biggrin.gif .
6. Go back and listen to them all and keep the best one. You might find more than one that you like (not always even 1 tongue.gif )
7. Then of course comes the beauty of Pod Farm. You can re-amp to get the exact tone you want. Re-amp to taste, add effects, and do a final mix.
8. I use sonar, but I'll bet reaper is the same. After you get a mix that you're satisfied with export the whole mix out to a file. Then mute the backing and export again to a second file.

As for posting, when you do a new post, there is an "upload" button. You can browse to your two takes and upload them one at a time. That part is pretty straight forward once you figure out which buttons to click and which drop down lists to select. smile.gif

Good luck!

Perhaps the first version, James! The lines are more melodic and somehow you were relaxed, the tone is slightly darker, calm and better for my taste, but it's just my opinion ! We'll see at the end, thanks !

Different country thing maybe...

Ok so i got the upgrade and downloaded the backing....BUT, reaper wont accept the track, file type is wrong...GRRR!
I tried saving it as another file type, but there is only one option, save as, all files...then i open it and it dont play.....

Any ideas?

Posted by: MonkeyDAthos Aug 6 2011, 05:55 AM

 Final_mix.mp3 ( 9.68MB ) : 171

First, let's say one thing: I cut off a bit some of the parts, because I forgot to say that would be a good that intro remain empty, but it doesn't matter, somehow tried to mix a guitars and it turned out very well, I hope you do not have nothing against.

Next thing I wanted to mention is - feeling the vibe !
It's about sound settings. Distorted sound is not exactly the best for this type of backing, it's too aggressive and breaks the beauty of the atmosphere. But if we ignore that little detail, I am very pleased how you have did a job, according to your abilities of course !
Let's go to a bit more detailed analysis :

1. JamesT

As I said above, except for distortion, which bothers me a little, the whole solo is great. phrases are assembled nicely, deliberately, and very clean, if we ignore a few unwanted dist tones .
Highlight : 00:30 - 00:43 !

2. WillJam

Very well balanced, without much philosophizing, nice and calm, also your sense of tact is very good, with minor mistakes!
But I spotted moment of deconcentration at 01:19 - 01:20 !
It's like those few notes are played like " wait ,a need a break", until you come up with the following phrase, or ?
Highlight: 01:10 - 01:18

3. Maris

Another good take! I will begin to repeat, and I would like to avoid that. You come up with a nice "question and answer" topic, very smart, but, why you didn't complete the job ?? Isn't it much nicer at 01:56 that you shift one or two octave higher ? instead- you came back to the beginning ! think about it wink.gif
Highlight: 01:49 - 01:56...and ascending ascending ascending smile.gif

4. Tyler

Well..the most interesting and weirdo recording so far! I did not expect that /C blues&mysteriousnotes/ scale can fit so well in the whole situation! Different from the whole story, but somehow fits, silly! You managed to migrate the whole song in a different genre!
If this was your intent - then it is very courageous and productive! Small objections to the timing, but nothing too serious!
Highlight: 02:27 - 02:37 perfect phrase

5.K1R

Very nice and calm! And a good relaxing sound ! You have made a good story, and all elements are well fit! Introduction, topic, elaboration, epilogue... well done !!
Highlight: 03:24 - 03:40

6. Jaxn4

In the first part of song your phrases are short and concise. This, of course, is not bad, but sounds somehow too mechanical . I have the impression that you are afraid to fall out if you put a bit sparkle to it !
The second part (04:04) is much better, longer and more meaningful phrases, smoother, more comfortable for the ears.
Good job !
Highlight: 04:05 - 04:18

7. Piotr

You probably expect all praises for this amazing guitarist! Weeel .. you are right!
We all know how good Piotr is, so I will not waste words on technique, phrases, tone, everything is superb!

But,I listened to this tape again and again and finally I managed to find a mistake! ops.. I can't say mistake, more like suggestion!
At 04:47- 04:49 ! you are finished shortly before a new circle, introduction to 2nd Part would be ideal that you're here a bit late with the whole phrase or at least last a few notes !
But just my opinion smile.gif
Highlight : from start to finish

I am very happy with your footage guys, and would like to repeat this very soon, but with video shots.I hope you will accept any of my criticism in the best way, and I wish you a lot of hard exercise !

Thanks again and see you soon here,

Sinisa
