Here is a little test I did some time ago. I was testing Audio-technica ATM610. It sounds very close to SM57 but it has more middle. In the studio tests it was better for some particular guitar tracks but as a final result I thought that the SM57 tone was smoother and needed less correction in the mix.

What's You mic of choice for recording guitars?

When I was using live gear I actually used a Sennheiser e609 with the SM57. The e609 had a less harsh high end but didn't seem as strong to me.

I use Shure Unidyne III, the precursor I think to the SM57. When I've compared them, they're close but the Unidyne III is slightly warmer.
I got one 2nd hand when I was starting out 30 years ago and really got to rely on that tone.
Nothing sounds better for guitars / cabs / drums / harmonica, even vocals with a pop filter.
At best they sound different, generally they're worse though.
I bought a bunch more off ebay a few years ago, they can be pretty cheap with the amphenol multipin connector (rather than xlr); just need to make sure they are supplied with a good cable before bidding.
Shure re-issued them about 5 years ago but the ones made in the USA in the 70s are super tough.
They often had an internal impedance selector, so just need to check it's set to low impedance / 600 ohms.
Pete

BINGO!! smile.gif That combo is just killer. When you use those you can either pan them or layer them in mono and blend in the 609 for killer bite. The 609 is a killer mic and a great bit of kit to have. I need to get another one.

Indeed I'm also up to get one of those senn's. I did some recordings while I had Orange AD30. Worked very well with ATM for very warm clean tones on humbuckers but I think it has some unpleasant clips in the 2500 Hz to 4000 Hz. Sm was more "flat" and easier to handle in the mix

Audix i5 is a mainstay for me for miking guitar cabs. Similar to the classic 57 but slightly scooped with a bit more presence.

For low/medium gain lushness I like to use a CAD Trion 7000 ribbon mic when I can. It's just a bit more capable of capturing nuances than a dynamic mic like the i5, and it's such a warm sounding mic due to the fairly flat voicing.

I'd love to get a pro level ribbon like a Royer R121 one day!

I don't even have any amps good enough to be worth recording! laugh.gif

Very nice comparison though, maybe one day when I get a better amp I can look into micing it up smile.gif

I did this demo with 100$ practice amp...and yes itwas good to demo because when something is nor perfect sounding You could hear how many details (those bad too) can transfer Your mic from amp to monitors wink.gif

This makes me want to get my half stack back and play loud live and with a band.

From that video I definitely prefer the SM57!

Playing in the band is what gives the true wings! It's a poor thing to see some talented players performing with cd backing tracks instead of the real band sad.gif Whole the fun is about all those hours in bus, funny situations etc. Also...completely different type of energy on stage smile.gif
