TWITCH has been making impressive inroads in the streaming world as it relates to music and guitar players. It started as a platform for streaming games, but now just about every big youtuber also has a twitch channel which they live stream on and then put the results on youtube as a secondary distribution.

Do you think TWITCH will replace YOUTUBE as the platform of choice for guitar players?

One guy who has really embraced it is HERMAN LI from Dragon Force. I'm not a huge fan of his music, but I do appreciate what he has accomplished. Since the pandemic sidelines his band and most bands for more than a year ,he jumped on twitch and started inviting other players to join him for live jame/interview sessions. He has has an impressive guest list partly fueled by the fact that many pro musicians were also not on tour and were available to join him. He even invited BRADLEY HALL who has a large following and makes some very funny videos. He is in good company. Herman has had a string of great players on. such as ..

Herman mentioned that STEVIE T was on the list of most hated guitar players. Here is the article. It's the usual suspects it seems. Hmm. Seems a bit harsh?

I haven't been reading much since, but there was a big hack and leak of almost all information (I think?) a few days ago. Not sure if Twitch has come out of that looking good. I do like the streaming world though, it doesn't require extended filming, planning and so on. Of course a good stream requires good content and ideas, but it can be a bit more spontaneous.

Very true, the entire thing including payout information got shared over on 4CHAN. Not a great look for twitch. It's got tons of momentum though, I doubt even a hack of this size will kill it.

I hadn't heard of Twitch until this post. I've checked it out and it gave me an idea but I'm not sure it would work. It could be great for GMC live improv collabs but maybe not everyone's connection would work, I know mine would at my holiday home. I see Herman invites players to jam I'm just concerned about latency etc.

I'm not sure it will overtake YT though.

There are lots of musicians on there now. I think it was originally more aimed towards gaming, but quite a lot of musicians stream, talk, practice, write and compose on there.

In terms of gaming/streams, twitch is kicking the crap out of youtube just now. It's been rather explosive. overall, they are just a fraction of youtubes traffic, but in terms of live gaming streams they are currently top of the heap. Now we are seeing other content creators (non gamers like herman li and such) embrace the platform for live streaming and then post the video later on youtube. It's just yet another means of leveraging content.

I do like the streaming platform idea in general (not just Twitch), but any of them. It adds some spontaneity, some interaction too, and you can still have sort of a IRL-lesson feel and not just a YouTube video. I do like YouTube videos too, but on the other hand I don't really like the IRL lesson format, and I don't think I could teach all that well myself in such a setting if I was to do it ever. I kinda fear the "please teach me Metallica songs"-students. I'm partly kidding of course, but for me I'd want to teach theory, technique, composing etc., not just covers

Thats certainly a part of doing IRL lessons There are wads of kids that really just want to learn to play their fave bands tunes. It's a natural progression of course. Eventually, they usually want to express themselves musically instead of just trying to play cover tunes

I think youtube is doing pretty everything these days...to make us go away. Years ago, most of us would predictit will not be advertisement-free forever, but the thing it became now has come to the point, where ridiculous. It was very clever to let people allow these to play to get some little money - everyone needs money - even the little one, especially when the can come regularly but...amount of these advertisements and current policy (now youtube can do it on every video, without your permission)...is just sick. I think they ask for it...

Well said! The ADs on youtube are just INSANE. It's non stop. 2 before the video, 3 during, etc. It's unwatchable unless you install an adbloxker that gets rid of it. I can't watch youtube unless im on a browser with a blocker. Tik Tok is a bit more clever in that the ads don't look like ads. They feel like tik tok vids. So you don't feel buried under adversts.
