GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Metal Cover Collaberation

Posted by: jer Sep 17 2008, 05:42 PM

Can anyone organize and do a collaberation here? Or is it an instructors only thing?

I'd love to get some people together and find a cool metal song we'd all like to cover. We can break up the guitar parts between 4 people or so.

If interested, reply here and include some possible songs.

I can whip up a backing track using a Guitar Pro file.

Yeah, i was wondering the same thing, can anyone organize and do a collaberation here...

Id be interested in covering a metal song, but i was thinking of an old black sabbath song and doing like a tribute to them... maybe something like children of the grave.

Yeah i know about the virtual bands... been in one, but it was taking too long for everyone to do anything so i left and made a few covers myself...

Id be looking for a few serious people to do a collab and get it done...

Anyone can start a collaboration smile.gif
just lay it out properly, normal practice is to have a backing track all ready to post for people to play over, tell us how many people you want to take part, solo`s or rhythm, take a peek through the finished collabs thread to get an idea on how to start one off smile.gif

I'd be up for doing a Sabbath cover.

Children of the Grave works for me.

Do we have any bass players reading this? Interested?

Vocalists?

I'll do one of the rhythm slots. What do you wanna tackle Outlaw?

I'd love to do one of these, but I'm not that good. mad.gif I do have a bass tho and need a good reason to get better with it. rolleyes.gif

Do you think Children of the Grave is in your range? (youtube link above)

tab here - http://www.tabsheaven.net/tab-text.php?id=2626

Dunno how accurate it is. But it should be enough to tell you if you wanna take a stab at it.

Don't be shy. Give it a shot. Worse case scenario is you get more evidence that your bass skills can be further improved.

I think I could probably do that. If I'm hearing right, it sounds like the bass with some distortion is pretty dominant in that tune.

Posted by: jer Oct 3 2008, 05:35 PM

Oh yeah. Its a dominant part.

It's GEEZER BUTLER!!!

You in then?

I may be able to get us a drum track that a buddy of mine made for this. He covered this tune as well.

If not I can whip one up quick enough.

I'll be getting us a drum track momentarily. And we'll have a bassist so thats cool.

And I know a dude that can do the vox if we dont have any volunteers here.

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 4 2008, 01:28 AM

I can add some of the rhythm in and improv a solo...

does anyone else have a pod x3?

we can download some tone that would fit this and both play with the same tone for the rhythm

Posted by: jer Oct 4 2008, 01:31 AM

I'll do rhythm too. Solo is all yours if you want it.

I'd like to keep our tones a bit different. To help split the guitars a bit and give it a huge sound.

I'll do the mix if thats cool with you.

Probably Sonar 7

I have Cubase SX3 as well but I mainly work in Sonar.

I may try a solo. No guarantee.

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 4 2008, 02:44 AM

Sonar 7 nice stuff there....

Im still working with audacity for free, but im probably gonna buy something this weekend... Im thinking im gonna get this program, looks nice for the money

Im still deciding on the acoustica program since i am an impulse buyer, i wanna make sure im gonna be happy with it

Posted by: Antipolitik Oct 4 2008, 07:34 AM

Hey guys,

My uncle Daniei a.k.a "Ozzy" can do the vocals. I can mix and master the song since I'll be recording the vocals.
Cheers!

Jonas

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 4 2008, 12:35 PM

Cool, thanks Jonas...

Everywhere i see tabs for this song they have it in C#, droped tuning 1 1/2 down... but when i was watching toni play it live in that youtube vid he is playing it in standard... And when i learned it by ear i learned it in standard fine...

My question is which is the correct way to play it?

Cool, I heard him sing on your upload yesterday. Jer is doing rhythm, I'm doing bass. I'd like to hear Outlaw and Antipolitik trading solos. Cool? rolleyes.gif

Posted by: jer Oct 4 2008, 03:39 PM

Yeah, thats the next thing we need to decide.

What tuning and what tab?

I'm fine in doing it in E or C.

Anything else involves me retuning or buying another guitar. Neither of which I'm ready to do.

Yeah lets just do it in standard tuning.... its easy to figure out using simple power chords, looks like thats the way he was playing it in that live youtube version...
Im not much on retuning and all that if i dont have to.... Its just a big pain

I can tab it out in standard e if you need me to?

Posted by: jer Oct 4 2008, 07:00 PM

Sure. provide us with whatever tab you want to use.

Thanks!!!

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 5 2008, 12:43 AM

If you wanna stay in standard its gotta be played something like this... just made this without my guitar, but it will show the chords that can be used...

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 5 2008, 02:10 AM

Just a quick tab with most of the notes in it to see how its played in standard e

Yeah, those chords sound like they'll work.

Do we have a master tab we're going off of?

Posted by: Toroso Oct 5 2008, 03:18 PM

What's the tempo for this one?

EDIT: OK, I dl'd a copy of GP5. I see Outlaw has it at 120. Hmmm, no sound from GP5??? Have to check that out later.

It doesnt matter what tab we use... its played in C#, so you can drop your guitar down 1 1/2 or play it in standard on the 9th fret... its all the same notes.. Im gonna keep my guitar in standard tuning, when i play along with the song it sounds just like it

Posted by: jer Oct 6 2008, 01:06 AM

We still need to know how we are all playing it though.

Not just the key.

But all the notes, picking patterns, etc.

For example, the tab you posted wasnt the entire song. And didnt have the same picking pattern as the original.

So we need to know how we are doign it so the guitars, bass, all line up.

I'll have the drums tomorrow night.

Its easier to play if you tune your guitar down 1 1/2 steps...

heres a vid of how they play it tuned down...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2vnbbyQ5H4

Just messin around with tones tonight...

recorded a quick one with some of the backing track few mistakes but i just wanted to hear the tone... and a little without the backing track to hear the tone of the guitar..

what do you think of this tone for children of the grave?

Posted by: jer Oct 7 2008, 01:34 PM

Tone sounds a bit psychadelic to me.

I'd back the flange down a bit.

I see what you are going for and its cool. Just not what I'm into so much. You picked the tune though so we can do it however you like man!

See if this link works for the wav of the drums. (big file)

http://cid-64216828d251ca14.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Public

They are from my buddy's cover of the same tune. He heavied it up a bit so it may not be what you are looking for. If we aren't going to use these (your call) post whatever drum track you'd like us to use.

I can play this on a guitar tuned to E, C, or B. Let me know which one and attach the tab we are all using and I'll be ready.

The effect is a little over the top IMO also. Just tone it down a little.

I have the main bass riff down. Working on the other parts, but I'm having a little trouble determining where they sit in the song.

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 7 2008, 10:27 PM

We are all doing this together... whatever is cool with me... tone wise we can use just a basic black sabbath tone, im cool with whatever... Why dont you lay the rhythm down and ill work on the solo, and an improvised solo...

Have we decided on a tab yet? We all need to be playing/picking the song the same way.

K. I spoke too soon.

That video has about 2% of the song.

We need FULL tab of the song.

And if we play it using the tab like that video has its going to be 1 1/2 steps too high. Is that what you want to do?

I cant keep asking for this. I'm happy to play this with you but in order to do that I need to know how you want it played. All of it. Not just the first riff.

If you have any questions please ask.

Both tracks (rhythm & drums) start at zero so if you drop them both into your DAW it'll line up.

There are a few spots where my guitar is missing. Those are the lead spots.

I figure whomever mixes it will apply the fade in at the beginning.

The guitar track needs to be moved back about 1 second or so in the time line. It is way behind the beat. What are U useing to mix the recording with Outlaw?

Just try a click and drag on the track dragging it back to your left while it is playing and then let go when it fits.

Other than that it sounds great everyone smile.gif

Here is your track Bro smile.gif

Download it in the next day or so and then I can delete it from the post so it doesn't take up my space.

I mixed it to an MP3 and good quality ( the file is almost 7mb ) so as you add other tracks the quality of your sound won't go to crap.

Whomever mixes the final will need to start from scratch though.

Unless the fade in on the guitar is to be done with the hi hat in there too.

And after adding the bass track, the guitar may need to be adjusted. This cant be done if the drums and guitar are one track.

I started working on the solo some today, just waiting for the bass to get added in and vocals
I improved over part of the song and kept some of it...

Is there going to be a second rhythm guitar? It'll sound HUGE if someone doubles what I did.

How are the leads coming?

Bass?

Antipolitick, your uncle gonna sing it for us still? You still gonna mix?

Posted by: Alex Lewis Oct 15 2008, 08:06 PM

If antipolitik does'nt wanna sing i can give it a bash mate sounds great so far!

I can double your rhythm if you wanna see what it will sound like...

I have been messing with the leads some, but i wanted to wait on the bass to be added in before adding leads...

Who wants to work on some leads with me?

I think it would sound better to have a couple of people improvising leads in here

Bass is not going well. I'm having a problem playing that main riff up to speed. Everything I have done sounds like poo. huh.gif On top of that, I'm unexpectedly travelling with work this week. Anyone else want to give bass a go?

Posted by: jer Oct 16 2008, 01:24 PM

I wouldnt mind trying a few lead spots. In the main solo section. Maybe a trade off kinda thing?

I left out that one lead riff part before the solo. Know which one I mean? That fast ascending thing.

Can you handle that?

Do you own a bass Outlaw?

I know the part youre talking about... I can handle that part, its a little tricky, but i should be able to get it down with a little practice

I dont own a bass, and since we recorded it higher than the original we cant rip it from guitarpro....

Anyone else wanna try bass for this?

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 17 2008, 01:41 AM

I messed with this some more tonight... i played along with your rhythm in it and i also improved a little solo and did a little rhythm improv at the end to add some solos to...

Let me know what you think?

My feelings wont get hurt if you dont like anything....

still need some bass added in and the vocals

Sure we can. All we need to do is transpose it up a few notches before running it thru a synth.

It just has to be played EXACTLY like I did.

As for your tone. I would back some of the FX off of it. And it should be fine. Its too stark a contrast with what I have in there.

Just finished redoing my rhythm part and doing the solo fills.... also let me know if you wanna keep the end of the song, i added a little improvise rhythm to add some solos to..

lets get this bass added in also... can you add the bass in?

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 22 2008, 12:12 AM

Yeah add the bass as soon as possible, unless someone has a bass and wants to play in this one..

the drums are off in the end at that improv rhythm i did... i just tried to extend the drum beat and guess it got off somewhere...

can you extend the drum beat a little at the end of the song?

Is there any room in this collab?

Posted by: jer Oct 22 2008, 01:52 AM

I dont have a midi file of the drums at all so it is what it is.

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 22 2008, 03:40 AM

Just redid it again... hooked the drums at the end better and redid my improv rhythm to match it

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 23 2008, 11:42 PM

Nice... lets hear it with vocals.... bass sounds great, nice job biggrin.gif

could you add some bass at the end also in that improv rhythm? that would be awesome

I can take out that improved solo at the beginning if needed, dont want to get in the way of the vocals... I just added it for fun wink.gif

the bass interlude sounds great...

Posted by: jer Oct 24 2008, 02:22 AM

Nice job Alex.

Antipolitik, are you still interested in vocals too?

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 27 2008, 02:07 AM

messed with this some more tonight, wanted to add something along with the bass in the break... but i didnt want to hide that awesome bass interlude, so i just made something to go along with the bass

let me know if you like it?

This mix is all over the place. Antipolotik, are you still interested in vocals and mixing this?

Does everyone have their individual tracks to provide the mixer?

The interlude part. Yeah man, I dig it the idea behind that. I'd move some notes around a bit. Some sound out of key to me.

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Oct 31 2008, 02:49 AM

I have my tracks for mixing....

Jer do you wanna record a solo?

Posted by: jer Oct 31 2008, 01:03 PM

Not really.

I've got nothing that feels right for this song.

Posted by: kebsis Nov 1 2008, 06:11 AM

That same harmonic inbetween every riff is killing me in the back track man.

here are the vocals sorry they are a bit late have e.q'd the backing to take a bit of squeal out of that pinch part hope you like it mate.

sorry i posted twice the "new" vocal is the one you want had some dodgy effect on the vocals first time around

Not bad Alex!

I'd take the lead guitar parts (fills) down a decent amount and lower all guitars across the board too. To bring the drums and bass up. The guitars are squashing them.

Just my 2 cents.

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Nov 2 2008, 09:15 PM

Yeah, sounds nice... just need to raise the volume on the vocals some

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Nov 7 2008, 04:00 AM

I just added a solo at the end of the song to go along with the improvised rhythm...

are we done with this or does someone want to change something or add something?

sorry i have'nt been around in a bit had a hectic couple of weeks with a few gigs and a death in the family
