Hello and welcome aboard!
You don't have to submit any videos or rec into the theory program!
I will be explaining you theory step by step and will do some pop quizzes!
I have a few questions before we will start!
-What are your goals?
-What is your weakness?
-What is your strongest point?
-Your favorite guitar players?

Hey Alex, I look forward to working with you!

Goals-- For me music is a hobby, I don't make my lliving from it, but I enjoy it very much. As far as goals go I just want to be well rounded player that can both learn how to play songs that I enjoy, be able to arrange existing songs in ways that I enjoy and also perhaps write some of my own stuff, and understand the theory behind all these things. Thats long term. Short term I want to understand theory behind chords and how to form and use them for chord melody pieces, as well as understand how to use and apply the more exotic scales. (Harmonic and Melodic minor, their related modes, etc.)

Weaknesses--Theory wise, I would say chord related things are my biggest weaknesses. I play two different instruments (Piano as well as guitar) and because of that I know the differences between major chords and minor chords and what seventh chords and power chords are, and I can readily find and play what I need on the piano. However, I can't really do this on guitar, (at least not well) and don't really understand how to build chords on the guitar. Stacking intervals on a piano is so much easier! Also I thought it was interesting that you mentioned harmonizing the G major scale. I can actually play that scale chord by chord, but I learned it by shape and by ear without really ever learning what it means to harmonize a scale or what notes were in each individual chord, I did not learn the theory behind what I was doing.

Strongest point--Hmmm theory wise? or playing wise? Theory wise if I have a strongest point maybe is would be my enjoyment of theory. a lot of times players tend to disregard theoy and think its not important. I have always found it fascinating. Playing wise I would say anything lead guitar related is a strong point for me. I love playing lead and have spent so much time developing this and learning how to play various modes and pentatonics that I have neglected the more chord related stuff.

Favorite Guitar players--

I listen to a lot of different styles of music and enjoy them all so its hard to nail down, but if I had to pick a top five it would be:

1. Gary Moore--Blues is my favorite style of music, and I also love Melodic Rock. He was great at both.

2. Dave Meniketti-- I love his blues album, its like Gary Moore on steroids, and his Rock stuff is awesome as well.

3. Neil Zaza-- His Christmas albums are amazing, and all his other stuff is awesome as well.

4. Joe Pass-- His Jazz albums are great, and a big part of why I want to learn more about chords and more exotic scales.

5. David Gilmour--His music is so atmospheric and powerful, and the first solo cover I ever learned was one of his.

This is probably the top five that I listen to the most, but there is a LOT of others I could mention, since I listen to so much different stuff.

I'm already working on your theory questions, will post my answers a little bit later!

- Write ii - V - I chord progression starting with Cmi7

Well assuming that Cmi7 is your ii chord, would it be:

Cmi7.......F# major7.......B major 7 ? Not sure, sometimes adding a seventh throws me off



- Build A7 chord

This means A major 7 right? Then a straight A major would be A,C#,E and to get the seventh you would add G#. Just out of curiosity adding a G natural sounds cool too, kind of bluesy, but what chord would that be?

THe harmonizing part made it a little hard, but wouldn't that be Gmajor7, Aminor7, Bminor7, Cmajor7, Dmajor7, Eminor7, F# diminished and then back to Gmajor7 ?

You did a very good job with a theory challenge!
but have made a few minor mistakes:
To harmonize G major scale you made one mistake in the end on F#mi7b5
G maj7 - Ami7 - Bmi7 - Cmaj7 - D7 - Emi7 - F#half diminished or mi7b5
A7 is a dominant chord so 7 should be flat
We will have A- C# - E- G (instead of G#)
For ii - V - I chord progression we will have
Cmi7 - F7 - Bbmaj7
F# would be a part of C#mi not Cmi
The key progression can be in two keys Bb and F
here is how to look at it:
D mi7 - Bb - Gmi - F
F major scale harmonized:
F - Gmi - Ami - Bb - C - Dmi - E dim

Bb major scale harmonized:

Bb - Cmi - Dmi - Eb - F - Gmi - Adim

You can see that the triads are the same in both keys so unless I will be using 7th chords it can be both!

Thanks for the feedback Alex! I have just a few questions

You said the last chord for the harmonized G major scale is F#mi7b5. If we were to change the key to anything else, for example C Major, would the last chord be a Bmi7b5? Is mi7b5 just another way of saying half diminished?

Could you explain what makes a chord dominant, like the A7 chord you used? I had always thought dominant chords were built on the fifth degree of the major scale, but I'm begining to think there is more to it than that.


On that last question I forgot that you can have two keys (in this case F major and Bb major) that share the same chords. How would the relative minors of these keys fit theory wise, since technically I believe they would have the same Chords, but arranged in a different order?

Great to hear you like Joe Pass! I have quite a few of his albums, (The Virtuoso series, Six-String Santa, etc.) and listen to them regularly. He got me interested in others like George Benson and Larry Carlton, but I think Joe is still my favorite Jazz guitarist.

Yes it is just another name for half diminished chord!
There was not key change if you will look at the circle of fifths G major is the first scale with added # which is F# that's why we got F#mi7b5

A7 chord is V degree of a major scale and will have I - II - V - bVII That's why we got G natural! IF we would have G# it would be Amaj7


Parallel minors have exactly the same notes it just all depends from what note you will start! So you can use either one F major or D minor Bb or G minor both will work fine!
The chord progression is missing Eb or E that's why all 4 scales will work!

All you have to do is:
-Create an account on Soundcloud.com
-Upload your track
- When you are saving track on the bottom you will se an option to make it downloadable
- Copy link and post it here ( GMC embedding on the left you will see a little table called quick access there is a section "Insert soundcloud" click on it and paste link in there)
