Hi Alex ! thanks for agreeing to mentor me.

Music has always been a passion. It is just wonderfull when the expressive power of music is unleashed to convey emotions. My objective is to achieve very high proficiency in guitar playing and composing quality guitar solos.

My weakness are ... well...... there are infact quite a bit of them...., in a nutshell, I need to learn all the techniques.

As regards my strong points, I play the guitar and piano (well used to play is more appropriate...., since I have not really played for a quite a long time due to my busy work schedule). I have also studied Music Theory up to Grade 8 of Trinity College London. I am now returning back (after a very long break) to my guitar with an exponentially intensified passion to make up for the lost time. My strengths are the little previous music exposure mentioned above (though I prefer seeing myself as a beginner) along with strong commitment, passion and drive.

My favourite guitar artists/ bands are Slash, Jimmy Page, Santana, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, etc.

I am very excited to start my lessons with you!

Regards
Ravindran

Awesome! So I have an idea!
How about we will start working on solo right away!
I have a cool backing track!
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/blues-mentoring
The chord progression is:
E7 - A7 - B7
I would like you to play 12 bars solo using this pentatonic shapes:
(To start we will go with E minor blues pentatonic all the way through)

I would like you to do a solo using those shapes! I will be joining you in a couple of weeks so it will be like a one on one jam! smile.gif
Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything!

Hi Alex!

Thanks for the first lesson, it sounds great! I shall be on it as soon I am back from my travelling!

Just for your information, I though it may be relevant to tell you that I have an Ibanez RG 370 DX guitar, Korg ToneWorks AX 3000G pedal and an old amp (which is not working well, I have to buy a new one). I have ordered an IK Multimedia Amplitube iRig - Guitar Effects Interface for my iPad/ iPhone, which I should be recieving in 14 days. I was planning to mainly use the Amplitube iRig for my guitar learning process. I also have Garage Band on my iPad, but do not know how to make use of it in my learning process. Could you kindly guide me how to effectively use these to enhance my learning process.

Since, I am new to the process, could you also kindly guide how to go about with the first lesson, I am supposed to download the track you send me and use it as a backing track and record my solo? Thanks

Regards
Ravi

Hi Alex! this is just to keep you posted,

I have started work on the assignment you have given me. Since the assignment is based E minor Pentatonic (I have noticed the additional D# note in the pentatonic scale), I thought it would be appropriate to get fluent with the minor pentatonic scale pattern in all the 5 CAGED postions before attempting the solo. I am working accordingly and hope its is alright.

The Chord progression is E7 - A7 - B7 while the scale/ pattern to be used is e minor pentatonic - is this unusual? since, the G# in E7 chord and the G in e minor pentatonic would be dissonant. Ofcourse a simple solution would be to not use G notes in the solo when the BG is E7 or may be to use it only as a passing note. Could you throw some light on this please.

I did use D# because it is a part of B7 chord and it is a fun note to throw in there! smile.gif
Try using E minor pentatonic this is how you will get blues sound it's not gonna clash even that E7 has a G# A7 has a natural G
And you can play E minor pentatonic through the whole backing track! Try it out and you will see what I mean! If you are interested I can explain in details why it works!
Let me know!

Thanks Alex,

Minor second is a dissonant interval - I would certainly be interested to know why it would work alright in a Blues progression, kindly explain please!

Ravi

Hi Alex,
How are you? This is just to remind you that I have not yet received (1) reply to my doubt on the minor second dissonance, and (2) the modes exercises (refer V Chat on modes).

I also need to strengthen my timing, could you also suggest how to do that.

Regards
Ravi

It took me a little while to get the explanation together
so here we go!
Let's look at the chords structure first:
E7 - E - G# - B - D
A7 - A - C# - E - G
B7 - B - D# - F# - A

So now let's take a look at E minor pentatonic:

So the only difference is minor third

But since it is a 7th chord we can look at minor third not as a minor third but as #9 Which is F## or G (E7#9 Hendrix chord)

Dominant chords are amazing because you can pretty much play anything you want over them and it will work
the reason is that the chord is very unstable and it sounds like it needs to be resolved that is why it will work

There is another way to look at it
E7 is a V of A major scale

If we will harmonize A major scale we will get:
Amaj7 - Bmi7 - C#mi7 - Dmaj7 - E7 - F#mi7 - G#mi7b5
As you know we can use minor pentatonics from 3 minor modes
in this case
B minor - C#minor - F#minor pentatonics

Now let's analyze F# minor blues pentatonic

As you can see it has natural G as well as G#
And E7 is a part of A major scale (E mixolydian)
That's why it works
I hope that makes sense! smile.gif
I will post modes workout shortly!

Thanks Alex,
I have down loaded the GP5 file for practicing. Presently I am also learning Ben's vibrato and Picking hand, as well as Bear Rose's Legato lessons. I have attempted making a solo to the backing track you send me. I need to record it and shall send to you shortly.

Hi Alex
Thanks for your message. I have been busy on the work front lately (and it is likely to be so for a few more weeks, may be till beginning of December). Therefore I have not been able to devote adequate time for completing the assignment you gave me. For the same reason I have not been able to attend your last few video chats also. Kindly bear with me on this. I have, however, been religiously ensuring that I play, at least for 1/2 to 1 hour daily, scales/ some solos or exercise from the GMC bank. I think from December I should be able to devote more time, and make up.

Regards
Ravi

Sounds good! I understand work is getting harder before the holiday season! Take your time and I will see you in the beginning of December! smile.gif
