GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ James Hetfield "there's Always Somebody Faster"

Posted by: Todd Simpson Sep 22 2021, 06:31 AM

Quick snippet of an interview when James Hetfield realized that there was a limit to how fast his band could play, a limit to how complex they could play. It was after the JUSTICE tour that it sorta hit him. There are tons of other bands taking what we did and pushing it further than we could ever push it. It struck him that here was no point in competing with these bands. He realized that this was when they needed to make a massive change in direction and this resulted in the BLACK ALBUM. The cut their hair, they slowed down their playing, he started actually singing, and the rest is history.

It's a great life lesson here imho. Once we think we have life figured out, that's when it changes on us. If we don't change with it, it just moves on and leaves us behind. I've never heard him talk about this before. I'm sure he has though.

QUESTION: HAVE YOU GUYS EVER HAD A MOMENT LIKE THIS?

In the arts, if you're good and actually have something to say, it's always beneficial to be able to corner than it is to just speed down the straightaway.

Well said smile.gif It takes time for players to realize these types of things. Some never do of course, they just join black metal bands smile.gif
