GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Slanted Frets

Posted by: Trond Vold Mar 9 2008, 10:44 AM

Anyone ever tried a guitar with slanted frets?
Like the Rickenbacker 481?

I havent had the chance to try one yet, but would really like to.

Anyone with any experience and opinions?

What's the deal with those frets, didn't heard that expression before.

This would be a guitar with slanted frets:

The frets are supposedly more ergonomic and stuff

It's also called fanned frets.

I'd never seen a guitar like that!, I bet it takes some time getting used to it.

i heard fanned frets give your guitar a bigger range, not sure how many extra notes.

I've never seen this model, but saw these kind of frets couple of times. Very interesting! I would definitely want to try it out to see how it fits. smile.gif

I played one last week and it feels a bit better than regular frets. They fit your natural hand shape better and are really cool but they take some getting used to for chords but after a few hours its really a better feel but not by a ton. just a cool feature not that popular though. I was playing some random custom made zebrawood. it was awesome and the frets are not called slanted they're officially called fanned frets. knock yourself out trond.

I too have tried a guitar with fanned frets. Its really excellent for lead playing, although it takes a bit of getting used to looking down at the fretboard you feel like its sideways.

Its really comfortable for doing leads and simple chords. Imo though its not practical for extended chords and well..you have to contort a bit to do extended bar chords.
