The easy trick seems to be just make good cover versions of songs that people love. The more I search youtube, it's easy to find folks with Millions of views doing covers. It's much more rare to find folks with millions of views doing original music. Sure there are examples of people doing original music and getting views. These seem to be the exception, not the rule. The rule seems to be, make really good copes of classic/popular songs. Take this guy. 3 Million views on this vid which is a medley of great solos from the 80s. I got tired of playing other peoples music a long time ago when I played in cover bands. I much prefer hearing something new. But that is NOT the prevailing view on youtube. What do you guys think? or I should say what do you think mertay?

I think your view is correct. Covers is where it's at.
Covers and/or a really pretty girl get the view counts up. And of controversy and stupidity. And I'm just talking about music type vids. Click bait BS like "Gibson blew it, is Fender next" or "Hey, what's up with this hi-hat part". Entertainment for cud chewers.
I'm pretty happy, no make that astounded when I can get over 400 views.

Sadly, this is just the state of things. So scantily clad gals, and cover versions of songs that one didn't write seem to get traction. There is almost no interest in original music it seems which is quite sad. All we are doing is just rehashing songs that have been rehashed over and over. Well, if you can't beat em, join em I guess smile.gif

I think this analysis is correct.

I also have huge problems playing someone else's material! I get bored if I can' jam away to my heart's content. But tha's just self pleasing - and I guess no one really wants to hear that kind of stuff.

Well, I think it was a month ago I read a (Sorry, Turkish so no links) about how people pay "companies" to get more clicks on spotify. Real people click and you pay how much to get how many clicks. For guitar, often the most viewed are the advertised ones if you check youtubers. Youtube suggests your video to users who it thinks are related.

So its pretty much like any other business, you must not only be relatively good at what you do but can't afford to not advertise.

Well said. You gotta make great videos, but really, to break through all the noise it really helps to advertise. Of course, one can do it with organic growth, but it can take 10 years of making great videos 3 times a week. The burnout rate for folks keeping that schedule is quite high.
