Peavy Xxx Vs Mesa Mark I

It can produce some quite good higain sounds but I don't know about the rest. So I assume it's not a very good amp for clean/crunch stuff. The XXX is probably more suitable for metal than the mark I. I do not he had it loud enough to really discern the tone quality, especially on a tube amp that needs plenty of power to get the full push of the tubes out in the form of a round tone. I think the Mark series seems really heavy on the mid-range and sound too much like those cheap Marshall MG's (or whatever the $600 half-stack model) is they sell. It has some awesome high gain sounds (Soulfly's Max Cavalera plays them) aswell as a good hardrock crunch and a similiar clean to the Mesa Mark I. But don't rush in - first check all the details properly. How old is this amp, did the guy use it a lot for gigs, studio etc. Also go to the store and try one out if you have a chance, or ask the guy to try it at his place/studio. Trying out the amp before you buy it is a must. See how the attenuator is working, and what kind of attenuator is that. Check the cab that you get with it - is it any good? The cab is very important part of the sound, so see how it behaves with that head. If you like the sound, you find it suitable for your music, and all other things are OK with it - then possibly you can consider getting it. I wasn't aware it came with a built in attenuator though, but with 120W it'll be useful! Like Ivan says, make sure you try it before you proceed.
