As some of you noticed in my previous thread, I was working on something rather huge. My first really long song, though it's mostly just a combination of some other songs I've recently.

There are still things to fix, but I feel it's good enough for me to upload now.

So here we go! If you have 35 minutes to spare give it a spin and let me know what you think smile.gif

I'd like to be the first to congratulate you on such a serious feat of composition and performance. I'm giving it a quickie test on my laptop speakers as that's what I have with me ATM. Of course, I can't tell anything as laptop speakers are crap. I do look forward to listening on real monitors. smile.gif

Maybe add a final lead passage at 34/35 minutes? just as a melody coda for the entire bit? Also left some notes on the youtube page smile.gif

Congratulations on putting together something this epic! The sections are different enough from each other to keep it evolving in interesting ways, but they sound connected enough that it never sounds like you just string a bunch of unrelated guitar parts together. Sometimes you come back to an idea, but it might be worthwhile doing more of that to make the whole thing more cohesive. And maybe some more dynamics. You have some quiet sections, but it might help to have really big sounding sections to take the listener on more of a journey. For example, the dynamics in the drums don't change very much. I know I've said this before, but the synth sounds that you're using are a bit on the cheesy side and I think that detracts from the overall work. The only reason that's so noticeable is because the guitar part is so good smile.gif.

Thanks, Rammikin smile.gif

I'm currently working on writing some vocal lines that and some lyrics that will hopefully tie the whole thing more together and add in to fill the more empty feeling spaces. Also I might add some more atmospheric lead guitar stuff, if I can.

The synth...well, I don't know. I like cheesy synths, but I guess I can see where you're coming from. I don't know how to get a better synth sound though.

I just left it on in the background while I was doing other things, was a lot of fun to listen to!

Don't have much to critique since it's not really my type of music but I was surprised by how well it went from section to section; like Rammikin said sound so different yet it never takes you out of the moment. Couldn't imagine writing something this long. laugh.gif

I write synthesizers for a living, so I'm familiar with how challenging finding distinctive sounds can be smile.gif. I'd recommend my own synthesizers to give your songs a more robust sound, but the selection of the sound is only part of it. The other part is making the sounds expressive. The synth sounds in your tracks don't have a lot of motion or expression in them. Again, it's only the fact that your guitar parts are so damn good that it makes shortcomings in any other part of the track stand out smile.gif.

Thanks, Socky! smile.gif

It was definitely a lot of work and has been in progress for a while in the form of other songs smile.gif

Unfortunatey I don't have access to any good synth sound, so I've just used Reaper's own ReaSynth with some reverb and some delay laugh.gif

If you really want to try some new synth sounds, you can download SAMPLETANK FREE from ik multimedia. smile.gif Here is the link. Wads of sounds for FREE which is always good smile.gif

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/news/?item_id=4555

But if you like the sounds you've got, you mentioned that you liked em a bit "Cheesy", then you can just skip the sampletank and use reaper. Or look for cheesy bits in sampletank smile.gif The good news is, you do have options if you wanna try new sounds and it's free smile.gif

Here is a vid on how to use sample tank inside Reaper. So yeah, your call! smile.gif

There are plenty of good free synths available. I wouldn't recommend Sampletank for your style (that's not a synth anyway), but Zebralette, Tyrell, or Crystal would be good choices.

Even trying other synths, I always return to a sound similar to what I have produced with ReaSynth. What kinda sound would you suggest, Rammikin?

If that's because that's the sound you want, then stick with it. After all, this is your musical vision smile.gif.

If you're looking for ideas on other ways to design, arrange, and mix your sounds, check out something like the New World album from Dave Kerzner. https://open.spotify.com/album/6AU0cVvu0H5nMdZHvDy9Gu He has a prog/spacey style. It's not necessarily about finding magic or secret sounds that sound "good". Rather, he uses arrangements and sounds that are expressive and complement the track.

Giving that a spin now, just started, 30 seconds in.

Of course I would like better or different sounds. I tried Crystal, but it kept doing weird things and I just got annoyed with it laugh.gif

smile.gif I don't want to mislead you...good sound design takes patience, even with something like Crystal. I first created Crystal over 10 years ago and people are still doing amazing things with it that I never would have anticipated.

I know, I know, it just kept resetting the sound when I changed it to something else. I don't have the patience today tongue.gif

I think I've improved the mix slightly as well as added some keyboard notes in the pre-outro:

Hey man

First of all Congrats on this great 35 min composition.
I think demo 2 sounds a lot better than the first one. Everything sits better in the mix and the repetitive nature of the drums kind of : flows better in the song. But also the guitars and synths have a more polished sound. When you listen 35 minutes to this it's less fatigueing on the ears compared to the first mix. Everything is just glued more together and the nature of the "cheesy synths" is less apparent. As already said by others :vocals and a guitar solo here and there would really beef things up. But dude, seriously, you can be very proud on this! It's an amazing piece !! Looking forward to further adjustments !!! smile.gif

Thanks, Nikeman! smile.gif

I tried going for a more crispier mix, though I don't know how to achieve it really. I think I somehow got it though.
