GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ New Blues Collab

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Dec 25 2007, 01:49 PM

Well here it is guys. The collab is open for everyone who wants to jam along. Again there is no "perfect" solo, You do what You do, and that is all that matters. Feel free to hop in and throw in some blues licks so we can all have fun and learn something new from each other. smile.gif

I also invite GMC instructors too to join in, so we can have someone to learn of and analyze solos from. It is a small work for you, but a great deal for the members. Thanks smile.gif

Little tip: I recommend using Dminor and Dmajor pentatonic scales combined. Experiment a little with those and you''ll see how nicely it fits together. smile.gif HAVE FUN!

Hm, getting all the riffs correct with one take is hard! I certainly did not suceed fully but this is my best shot =)

PS: Smells your take kicks ass

It was recorded through a Firewire 410 into a Shure SM57 hanging off a drum stick infront of my Mesa F-50. Hahha

Here's my clean take, pure pentatonic abuse tongue.gif

I went a bit off tempo around the middle, but nothing too serious, also this time I just improvised unlike previous collab's where I wrote my solo before recording.

Posted by: Crazyfret Dec 27 2007, 06:44 PM

Hey there. Here's my offering for the Blues collab.

This is the best of my solos, had to stop my fingers were hurting wink.gif

Had to go clean on this one it just felt right for me cool.gif

This was recorded from my line out socket on my Marshall MG 50DXF, (apparently the worst Marshall ever!!) and into my pc via IK Multimedia Stealthplug. Track recorded on Sonoma Riffworks.

Here's mine.

I tried something I havent done before, slide and fingerpicking with open D tuning on electric guitar.
I'm happy about the phrasing, but technique wise it's incredibly sloppy tongue.gif

(It's not always inside any particular scale btw)

Ok, yesterday i promised Ivan i'll record a solo for this blues collab and here it is. I must admit i jammed an hour to this backing track and didn't like even 1 solo an i just figured out that blues is definitely not my style and i don't even enjoy playing it sad.gif Here is my attempt:

OK I will try and get an upload ready in time too then smile.gif This will be an enormous song but the end!!

Okay man, I'll wait it not a problem at all, we can go through the deadline a few days, take it easy. smile.gif

So folks, once again, 10 more days to end the blues collab, plenty of time on your hands, grab that guitar and lets see how you play the blues - your style off course. As you can see, we have all kind of sounds and players here, so it doesn't matter if you play HM or HC or Punk, or Rock, or Jazz, it all came from one music. Lets hear it at its best on the GMC smile.gif

Cool. I just got my sm57 in the mail here, so I think I'll be experimenting with it and I should have something for you within ten days. I kind of need a stand for it though tongue.gif Or at least some way to keep it at a good position.

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Jan 3 2008, 01:29 AM

Get some pillows in front of the amp and mike it like that until you buy a stand.

Also (if you can please) keep me updated about other recording equipment you used and the recording process, I like commenting those too (off course constructively) smile.gif

Great idea on the pillow thing Ivan. Is it better to mic in a small room or a larger one? And I would probably need to do something with the walls right, I've heard that the hard surfaces can really affect your tone when mic'ing.

ohmy.gif Hey, I have the same acoustic as you! The Esteban Starlight Edition! I got it off of... a home shopping network... sad.gif laugh.gif I haven't had it for a long time, I left in in California with my mother when I moved up here, that was before summer.

Anyways, sorry I'm so late. My internet was having issues, and then I forgot that I signed up for this! I'll try and get something done as soon as I can!

Posted by: JVM Jan 4 2008, 06:17 AM

I just recorded something I'm fairly happy with - but it's on the toneport. I can't fire up the amp right now - too late at night tongue.gif So I'll jam some more tomorrow, and then record it again through my amp.

Awesome backing track!

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Jan 4 2008, 04:11 PM

Thanks m8,

regarding your amp... put the amp in the smaller room if you can and wire it. You can put it in the bigger room, it is not a problem, but smaller one creates little reverb, and off course, you need to be dry because of the later production process.

Also put some blankets around the amp, or cover it, this will definately get rid some of the reverberation.

Posted by: JVM Jan 4 2008, 08:56 PM

What do you mean by "wire it"?

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Jan 4 2008, 08:59 PM

Mike it, i said wire it instead, sorry for the confusion smile.gif

Posted by: preownedguitar Jan 5 2008, 12:19 AM

Hey Ivan. Nice backing track. I didn't even notice that this one was open to the public until 30 minutes ago. Had a great time playing this one. Happy new year.

If the collab is going to be open til the 12th still, I won't be able to record the amp til next week sometime most likely sad.gif However, since I already recorded something, what I'll do is post that now and if you want to change the end date thats fine. If not I'll try to get something in and then we can compare my tone tongue.gif

This was my third improv last night and if I were to record it again it'd probably just be more or less the same just mic'd instead.

I just figured out that the Bm pentatonic scale works as well. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Jan 6 2008, 03:42 PM

Bminot pentatonic has the same notes as the Dmajor pentatonic, so you're spot on! I would love to see some solos including major and minor scales mixed together, because I think this is one of the main ingredients of the Blues. I wrote this on my oppening post in the topic smile.gif

Great recordings so far guys. I've decided to do mu own recording in the end too, so we can comment each other. smile.gif

Hi Ivan,
I've just had a listen to the blue jam collab, and loved it, I need to learn more. In the D7 backing track, can you please tell me what the other chords are ? I've tried to work them out but I'm not certain that I have them correctly. I'd appreciate it very much.
