GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Do I Accept And Run With The Money?

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Apr 10 2014, 08:55 PM

So, I've had my Laney MXD120H half stack for sale for half a year now or so, no one's interested, despite what I'd say is quite a reasonable and cheap price. I'm down to selling it for a third of what I paid for it when I bought it.

Anyway, long story short, no interest, it's at my parents house, as there'd be no need for me to have it around my apartment anyway.

But...here comes the weird part. Someone was supposed to come and have a look at it today, but in the end decided against showing up to have a look. Then my mom called me and said: "Hey, what do you say we buy it off you and then we're the ones stuck trying to sell it? Is that an idea if you need the money?". I declined at first, but she told me I could always just call and say: "yes, thank you!".

Don't know what to do here biggrin.gif It's "only" like $250, but I guess I could use the money. I'd just feel bad about them then being stuck with it!

This depends on your economy and your mother's. I think that she is doing an investment for the future. One day, when you become a famous guitarist, she will sell it for a big amount of money to a fan. smile.gif

I think my biggest fan at the moment is my mom. laugh.gif Probably always will be! She's probably the reason for half of my youtube views. She's constantly calling me saying: "I just searched for you on youtube and you've put something new up!", regardless of what it is biggrin.gif

My parents economy is alright, I think, otherwise they wouldn't give me the offer. My economy is alright, but I'm trying to save money up for a new guitar plus to get my cat sterilized, and I can't save much money up every month, so it would be a big help.

you tried taking it to a music store to see what they would give? Also, consider breaking it up? You might be able to get a couple hundred or more just from the cab. Folks may be turned off by the solid state head. You could always use the head just as a power amp for your rig.

I"d be a buyer of a cheap laney cab if it were here in the states. I'm guessing someone nearby or on ebay would as well smile.gif

I haven't tried breaking it up, but that might be worth a try if it doesn't sell soon. smile.gif

It's not the best you can get of course, probably very much an entry level to half stacks and such, but I honestly quite liked it back when I used it.

I'd say that both you and Gab are close to the 'truth'.

This is probably your parent's nice way of offering you a loan. It's the kind of thing my mum does for me and my sis even though both of us left home years ago and earn a reasonable income. For what it's worth my mum would worry more if I said 'no' and has even got angry with me when I have refused. So take it, when it sells if it goes for more you can always give them the extra as interest smile.gif .

I think that the guys already gave you some good advices smile.gif I too have to sell some stuff, but I haven't yet put my effort into selling it, so I think that you should try harder. In any case, I wouldn't accept your mom's offer if I were you smile.gif Maybe my ego is too big, but I think that a man can handle this situation without his mom's help wink.gif Or at least try all the possibilities before even thinking about this option.

Yep, that is the other side of the argument, along with the fact that I'd feel bad about them not being able to sell it either. But it's tempting still! laugh.gif

I have never had money help from my parents even though they could afford it. They are always generous anyway with presents at Christmas and birthdays for Me, My Wife and our kids....so they do give/help on those occasions when you cannot really refuse. I think its a kind offer from your Mother...but one day you have to show her that you can stand on your own two feet..Don't sell your stuff too cheap...just cheaper than other similar stuff...in order to attract a buyer and you will. Like Cosmin said...cut the apron strings Bro!!!!! laugh.gif

when I am thinking of your mom trying to sell that amp, I can't help but seeing my mom and dad trying that. It would be hilarious laugh.gif and it wouldn't work laugh.gif 'Ummm, yeah it has tubes... How many? Hmmmm, let's count them...'

I have the same picture in my head of my own mom and dad. laugh.gif

I've never asked my parents for help, but they do help out occasionally by themselves.

I could have used the money though, I guess, to get my cat sterilized and all that jazz, but I'll have money for that next month anyway, I think.

In the case of a single dude, saving up and managing your resources is a far less tricky thing. I usually like to keep an Excel file in which I write down what I want to do with money on the long term, in respect to gear, clothing, traveling or sword or band related things (these are basically my needs other than food and bills) and a monthly schedule of the income sources and the monthly expenses. Some things can be rescheduled some can't and so on smile.gif I am trying to monitor these things each week and see what's what. It usually pays off smile.gif

I'm on a pretty strict budget as it is, but I could probably save some money on food if I planned things out better than I have been doing so far.

Do you cook or eat out? smile.gif

IMHO those Laney mxd ampds in deed were nice for the price...but the cab itself took half of the tone quality away. I mean...If You put mxd head on a descent cab You might surprise yourself smile.gif It probably an ilness of never ending "forum search" for what is good or not. Before...people were just trying out and buy if they like. Now they have to know what to buy before even crossing the door of a shop.
Like You said. Not much even bother to come and play to make their own opinion. That's sad.

From my experience at music shop sale I can say that at least 50% of customers buy things they come and say " Anything but not this" at start...then they plug a guitar, test other stuff and go back to buy this particular gear. That's funny how people think these days smile.gif

As for the parents...Very kind of them but same as guys above I would rather treat it like a kind of loan smile.gif
