I have been researching these lately and I am wondering if anyone has used them. If so, could you please answer these questions for me?

1.) Is it worth paying the extra $10 USD for the booklet it comes with?

2.) Is it easy to switch back to a regular guitar pick(Dimension Junior Buffed, V-Pick)?

3.)Did you notice enough of an improvement to recommend these picks to others?

Thank you.

Brandon

The first time I see this, very interesting, but I read comments that it's actually picks for the exercise and not for live playing. I would like to get a piece of that smile.gif

I've heard of these I think.. are they the picks that cause you to stop if you use incorrect technique ?

Sounds interesting, I like to try these things, usually the claims these kinds of things make sounds too good to be true, but I think it's good to try new things when they come along to see if it really is a better way of doing things.

I've ordered the booklet+3 picks so I'll let you know my experiences when they turn up. Might take a little while as I'm in the UK and international shipping is slow sad.gif

Yes they are. Todd Simpson mentioned them in a different thread, the link is located below, and so I wondered if anyone here on GMC has actually tried using them. I am ordering mine today, I believe.

That's very interesting, it forces you to play with only the tip of the pick. Should create very even tonal character, but not sure if it's very flexible (for all types of playing, strumming, sweeping etc..)

Yeah, it's designed to force players to develop a correct, efficient technique.. I guess if you played with another pick after that the learned behaviour should transmit to playing with any pick ? Who knows... interesting though smile.gif

I just bought them late last night, so I would imagine they will be here either Friday, or early next week. I will let you all know how effective they are, then. happy.gif

Ben is correct, they are designed to train your hand to pick in a very efficient manner, and with the very tip of the pick in order to increase speed and precision. But it's a TRAINER ONLY so you can't really use it for standard playing. The way it's shaped prevents it from working on chords and such. Massive pointy cylindrical head near the tip.

I mentioned these the other day in VIDEO CHAT as I ran across them on the web and it reminded me of getting one second hand many years ago and how it really helped me get over the hump in terms of Alternate Picking. It's a bit like training wheels for your pick, the good news is, once you develop the muscle memory, you can switch back to a regular pick and keep up the results. It's because of my experience with this pick that I started sharpening my picks.

Now of course, nearly every vendor has a "sharp" pick straight from the factory smile.gif Which is great. For quite some time, sharpening picks was something almost nobody did or understood. Now picks come that way wink.gif

So far it has been! I don't have an insane amount of speed yet, but I am back up to sixteenths at 110 BPM. I started at 56 BPM on Sunday morning.

It has helped me to keep my Picking ridiculously economical, but that wasn't because of the pick design. That was actually because of the instructions. Read instruction #6 VERY CAREFULLY. It literally tells you the entire secret of the program.

I know it sounds strange, but try this(Some of you may have discovered this, but I did not). Put the very tip of your pick on any string as if you are going to downstroke; and just lightly hold the pick on the string. Then fret normally with your left hand. You will actually notice that your right hand does absolutely no work in moving the pick, but it transfers that responsibility to your left hand. When I discovered this, I nearly shat myself as it destroyed everything I knew about the concept of Alternate Picking.

After that, just try and keep your pick on the tip of the string. It literally becomes a game that your hands play with each other.

The only other thing I can say is that until you get the economy of motion issue fixed do not play open strings, and do not attempt double or tremolo picking. It will ruin all the practice you put into it.

I received mine now too, and tried it out for the first time this morning. I did all of level 1 exercises for 15 mins each, at 56bpm. I'm unsure if it's helping all that much yet, but I did find that when I go back to playing fast it's showing up some errors in my technique. I'll keep going with the exercises each day and see if it makes any improvement. The picks design is quite useful in that it makes it really obvious when you're putting the pick too deep.

I hadn't tried what Nihilist1 found, I didn't realize that's what the instructions said. I will try that tonight.

My only issue with it so far is that some of the instructions are written very badly - obviously by someone who doesn't speak amazing English. Outside of that I'm pleased with it thus far, I'll keep you guys updated with progress.

Cheers,
-Adam

Sounds like it has seriously helped which I"m thrilled to hear wink.gif I remember when I started using one eons ago and I only had a couple of pages from the book it was supposed to come with (got it second hand at the time) and I was just floored about how much I'd been overdoing it, over working, wasting pick energy, etc.

Once you really get the "economy of motion" idea, picking makes a lot more sense and seems loads easier.

Todd

Actually really strange you mentioned these... I was just about to start a thread about how much I liked these today. huh.gif
I've always thought I was doing something wrong when picking for 5 years and these picks I think are the solution. They came 2 days ago. I did 2 hours of alternate picking practice with it for 3 days and it's made me realize my problem is digging in too far. It is hard to get used to if you have a heavy touch and dig too far in- It was hard for me to play a single note the first day. biggrin.gif

But I already feel less resistance when picking. It's incredible. I understand I don't have much credibility after only playing with it for 3 days but I can feel it. Now it slides across the string like butter...

Anyways I know it's not magic. If I don't put in the work I won't get anything out of it but I do feel it enforces correct technique. Only "problem"? It's got an awful tone but it's a practice pick so it doesn't bother me. My goal is to do 1 to 2 hours of alternate picking a day with the stylus pick for 3 weeks. I'll let you guys know my progress then. (I love this thing biggrin.gif )
