Now Ive watched alot of Paul Gilbert videos. Probably almost all of them on Youtube. Now it wasnt till I was at my recent guitar lesson and I brought my "Silence Followed by a Deafening Roar" Dvd, that I picked up on something he does, and probably alot of guitarists.

When he holds the pick on the side of his index and curves his index underneath his thumb he gets that nice angle when picking. I never really tryed that because I have also attacked the string the opposite way. Can some people give me some insight on attack the way Paul does it, I can get it to sound nice and fast sometimes but my hand is used to the other angle, but Im always open to expanding my Horizions biggrin.gif

Theres a great video on youtube where he explains the whole dynamic to his picking. The greatest way to achieve it is to look at how your thumb is positioned, the more you bend your thumb, the more angled the pick will get (getting closer to PG's tone) while the more your straighten it out, the easier it will be to play fast, but the same dynamics wont be given....

Lemme find that vid...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpJNUGHxC3M long one but watch it all!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YvsOKTPaks...feature=related Another short vid by PG

Good luck, this is the style of picking i love smile.gif

The thing about being really stupid, is that there are a zillion ways to be a moron. There are usually several ways to be intelligent, given a situation, but it is a small finite number. But there are always a zillion ways to be to blithering idiot. So finding a new way to have the intellect of an artichoke is nothing to be proud of really, it is easy to do.

Yeah it seems that its easier to do fast runs down the neck with the one angle but it seems harder to do those fast licks that paul plays in the first video Sami posted with that same angle

You should be able to change the angle to produce different sounds, I like Eric JOhnsons picking technique explanations, they are a bit better then Pauls.

Sure. It's kinda simple really. Eric uses a pretty thick small pick with very soft edges. The soft edges is crucial for this technique.

The second thing that you've got to remember is to hold your pick very gently and softly.

Now, instead of picking "through" the string you lower your pick and brush it on the string, like when playing the voilin. This is to get a very soft attack but still pretty good output. Hope this helps.

That is just a result he likes to get here and there,
many players play with just one pick angle and there
is nothing wrong with that.
Exploring is what you should do,
to get more experience with those angles
and to see if you really need them at all,
that's personal preference. smile.gif

I think Paul Gilbert's picking is awesome, my favorite for shred, very aggressive and dynamic, sounds killer. Johnson's is awesome too, but it is smoother it is just different. I like both.

I love Johnson, problem is that if you hear more than one song, it'll sound like the last one, imo. sad.gif

Eric is one of my favorite guitar players. Brilliant technique, tone control, melodic choice, rhythm, pacing, songwriting skills , he even sings in his songs smile.gif
I can't agree with you unfortunately.

How is Manhattan same with SRV or Cliffs of Dover or maybe East Wes ?

I would say that he has repertoire of harmonic ideas that he likes to use in his songs. Like harmonic cadences, recognizable signature licks and techniques but by any means this doesn't make his songs sound the same or like the previous one. They all have different vibe to it , what stays is his tone and amazing signature sound.
That's what I like to think about him anyways , imo smile.gif

Yeah I think Eric is Very Talented. He defiently has a better explaination of picking ideas.

I think none of his songs sound exactly the same, I think he has more diverse songs then other players out there.

Great Player ! biggrin.gif
