You can do whatever you find interesting and good sounding with the powerchords. I recommend using my songwriting lesson in order for you to get some ideas on how to use chords better to make a harmony. Instead of using triads, use only the root and the fifth and you got yourself powerchords.

I read the first few posts, so maybe someone said already, but power chords do not really give the full tonality, so actually you can do more over power chords than you do over the triads.
However, some sequences really sound nice if you do the power chord base and add a full scale solo on top. Take this sequence for instance: Em , C, D It is on Em key and you can improvise easily with Em pentatonic Now if you use the power chords: E5, C5, D5, you can still improvise just using Em pentatonic. Heres a little example of E minor pentatonic played over E5, C5 and D5 power chords. I'm in the 2nd,3rd and 4th "boxes" of the scale. Hope it helps ya man. Steve |
