awesome idea Ive lost count of the amount of great songs / bands Ive found through GMC.
There's 2 songs I seem to be unable to get enough of at the moment...
This is about the heroic rescue of our stone
and this just might be the best cover Ive heard in a long time

Wonderwoman movie is out now and seems to be doing fine. I wantched a video where composers of the DC comic series decided to do something different for wonderwoman and worked with Tina Guo;

Lately I became obsessed by a song from the movie "The shadow effect". The composer is Denis Surov, a very young guy which is definitely very talented. I like everything from this song: the melody, atmosphere, lyrics and Denis voice which is very warm. I must recognize that I'm not a fan of his guitar tone but I think it fit perfect in the context

Classic Metal tunes being done on tradition instruments is just awesome IMHO They seem to translate well! I even like it when they turn them in to something odd like techno. Good pull!

This is just awesome. TINA is amazing and she is really taking off latley. She did an amazing job playing with EINAR from WARDRUNA during a big live concert where they did bits from vikings. She plays with a guitar style pedal board and gets some crazy tones out of that cello. Great to see her doing well

Definitely the best vibrato technique ever, and I've watched a lot of women doing their vibrato thing

been listening to this today. It kinda reminds me of something else a bit..... cant place it though. Either way, its a cool song.
some great songs on those lists I started using spotify earlier this year and really like it. Never used to bother with streaming sites but its been really convenient and I found a bunch of new bands.
I have a spare account that I use for playlists at work and I always make sure to have some Cirse on it. So you guys get regularly blasted out in a Scottish warehouse which might not be as impressive as being on the same bill as Metallica but then again Metallica didnt even make it on the playlist
been listening to this track a lot recently. Its got the best pre-chorus ever..... if you are impressed be lots of swearing, which I am https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XjuOxOl3kE

Wow the cover photo couldn't be more misleading
Very nice, not something I'd listen for hours but felt good. I know the modern west world guitar community doesn't accept non-perfect tunning (?) but I've always liked that and even call a musical advantage of the guitar

Mustaine words:
"When Kiko started with us, I basically had an interview with him that was mostly about his personality.
"I'd already seen a YouTube clip of him playing with our last guitar player, Chris Broderick. I saw what Kiko was doing and thought, 'Wow, he's really remarkable.'
"So I had him come out, and we had a wonderful time hanging out.
"At one point, we're sitting in my house, and the phone rings. I pick up the phone, so Kiko grabs his acoustic guitar and starts playing something in the background.
"My jaw dropped, because he was playing what became the song 'Conquer or Die' on the new record [2016's 'Dystopia'].

Exactly Mertay!! It's like with Franco et TP OK Jazz a lot of people avoid it because of the 'Jazz' in the title! Sometimes the 'out of tune-ness' actually adds a bit of interest to some tracks and is partly inherent due to these guys not being able to afford decent quality instruments!

I go through phases in what I like to listen to - as of late, Richie Kotzen is on my radar. Jump to 1:23:00 and listen through the end of his show if you have time - it's really the point of the show where he catches on fire and does some amazing runs and feel. He's finger picking all of his solos and rhythm - he's such an amazing player.

Had this on in the car the past couple of days. One of my favourite punk albums. It's a concept album, possibly the first punk concept album but correct me if I'm wrong. It a day in the life of Gary (nickname Joey) and has dialogue in between tracks. It was made into a TV program but I can't find it anywhere. There are surprisingly and few pieces of quite good guitar intros and fills here and there, but this is a punk album so don't expect Mr Vai
The last two tracks aren't on the original album and I think they should have been kept off it.

Having a bit of a punk phase lately, reliving my youth
For a 70's punk album this has quite a bit of guitar work, even some delay and one of the solos lasts at least 8 bars Favourite track, is I'm An Upstart (Track 6), love the main riff, very catchy
I was getting some funny looks at the traffic lights, this overweight, middle aged bloke in his car, singing along with angst to a 70's punk band

I never really got into Linkin Park, I'd heard the singles etc but that's it. Then we did a Chester Bennington tribute and I bought this. At first I thought, "Hmmm, it's ok, not really my cup of tea" but the past few days I haven't spent a minute in my car without this playing, LOUD, it's doing my wife's head in, she doesn't like rap at all, she says she can't hear what he is singing ( to which I said "treat the vocals as an instrument" ) this evening was the first time I caved in and let her have Thunder on
Man, the arrangements, the passion, the angst, the lyrics EVERYTHING is awesome. Thank you Gab for doing that collab, I will now get the entire back catalogue.

I remember having a cassette that had Rhapsody on one side, and this album on the other. I was a metalhead that though that this was for me. However, for any reason, it happened to me the same than you, I keep on listening to it, and it became addictive. I was enjoying more that LP that Rhapsody's. In those days I also started to listen to bands like Incubus, Papa Roach, Hoobastank, and in those days I've started my band Cirse, inspired by all those bands, but also with influences from all my music background. Foo Fighters was also a big influence for my band.
And who else can hear my love for Maiden on this one?
And off course, Linkin Park vibes on this one:

abba was great. especially compared to the crap they listen to today.
I came across this by accident. I thought of a song that I wanted to send to my girlfriend, an old one called "I only want to be with you". She requires some sweet talking. I came across a cover by this band called "The Tourists'. They were an earlier incarnation of a band that was much more famous in the 80's called the Eurythmics, but I think they were a hell of a lot better. Here is one video. The Robot dancing is also cool.

Found these folks and I dig em They are from Gothenburg Sweden but they are NOT Metal or Rock in any sort of Heavy way. They are more of an alt. pop band and sorta sound like the Cure from their early work with bits of Joy Division thrown in but with a female lead singer. The original ones were done in 92-93, we changed Line-up a few times and we did a live EP in 94 and another Demo in 94 also. We had loads of tracks that have never been recorded as we were much more of a 'Live' Band. The Drummer and I were chatting about one of the unrecorded Tracks in particular and that's how the idea came about. Unfortunately all the original stuff was recorded onto Tape and has degraded quite badly. We were kind of a mix of Glam, Pop Punk and Rock. This is from a Demo we did for a friend of ours Record Company. This was taken from one of those degraded Tapes so the quality isn't good. All the separate guitar parts were done in single takes and the Solo was done on the fly, I hadn't worked anything out at all!! Breakerbone_Skyline.mp3 ( 1.69MB )

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM is getting a LOT of ink and almost all of it is positive. This album got ALBUM OF THE YEAR from decibel magazine. I'm sorry to say, I don't really get it. Here is a vid. Take a listen. It sounds sorta like watered down IN FLAMES to me? It's not very "Heavy" IMHO, and a bit pop in places. This is the release of the year? Really? What do you guys think?
As for new music, I do like MYRKUR and I know she is very controversial. There is a big debate on whether she is Metal at all, much less "Black Metal". Black Metal has been restrained by it's own doctrine of what isn and isn't black metal for so long that all of it has started to sound exactly the same I'm glad she is shaking things up. She can actually sing which is refreshing after enduring a decade or so of folks who honestly can't sing, and instead grunt.
Here she is doing an old Scottish ballad (THE DAEMON LOVER). She has a great voice and does a killer job on traditional folks music of all kinds

Thanks mate!! It's probably my favourite track of ours, although I did prefer the way our original singer Paul phrased it. Not sure if there are any recordings floating around with him.
Also, all that noise at the very end of the track is where I snapped a string putting down the Guide Track, it sounded cool so we left it in the Final Mix!!

Been revisiting early Marillion lately. Their first album was the bomb. I dont think I appreciated just how good it was back in the day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0WIY1z13jg

That album has been on heavy rotation for me as well! E took a few listens to really sink in. They do check off a lot of boxes but somehow manage to make it all sound cohesive.

In the "IT"S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL " category, the first band HEILUNG has a singer named MARIA FRANZ. She is the one who wrote this song (VINDA) sung here by KATI RAN who often plays as a guest in Ghaals "Wyrd" which features Ghaal who also used to sing in Wardruna which features Einar Selvik who also used to be the touring Drummer in Gorgoroth (which of course was led by singer Ghaal). Also, Einar joined up with the singer from ENSLAVED and did a project called https://www.facebook.com/SkuggsjaNO/?fref=mentions And around we go I noticed the connection with a couple of vids you posted (Heilung and Enslaved). If you get deep enough in to this type of music, you will keep coming up with many of the same names over and over. They all know each other, most are pals, and most guest on each others music projects

Happy to share some info Yeah, the scene is just a bit smaller than it seems imho. Especially in places like Norway which are not large countries to start with. It ends up being very tight nit and everyone knows everybody else and plays on their projects and such. It's cool that there is such a sense of community It seems that has faded here a pinch as live music in general has taken a hit over the past many years.

Here is a Metal band that manages not to be a "CORE" band. I like their previous bits a bit better (even though I hate being that guy "I like their old stuff"). It's a great example of a band that can play and a singer that can actually sing. I'm sooooo tired of cookie monster all the time every time and sooo many core bands. Anyhoo, here is SAVAGE MESSIAH (sadly I think they used one of those name generators for their band name as it's a pinch cheeseball)
Here is their track HELL BLAZER!
Just realized why this lick sounded familiar, I made something similar before I ever heard of these guys. They are sorta playing a lick that I would probably play as well. Small world. here is the one I did. I'd almost swear that lick is in BOOTCAMP somewhere
From 'Lykaia' by Soen. Cant get enough of this album at the moment. If you've not heard them and are into a Tool / (Damnation) Opeth kinda vibe then def worth a listen.

It sounds at least as good as any recent Meshuggah or Periphery IMHO. The bad news for me so many bands are such fans of those two groups that their sound is becoming quite wide spread and we are getting tons of clones. Even Perhipery themselves admit to being heavily influenced by Meshuggah as about every modern metal band has been, even myself. The sound of open muted strings locked to a kick drums is still fun I just hope bands start to make it their own thing and expand on the idea a bit. With so many of these bands it's hard to tell which one is which as soo many tracks could be a B side for a Meshuggah release. Time will tell I do dig the sound of it though. He knows what he's doing.

You know, I quite like some of Opeth's newer stuff. I really really like Mikael's clean voice and have no problem with lack of a more death metal vocal approach. But I would love for an album with a more death metalish opeth vibe instrumentation, even if just with clean vocals.
Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jan 6 2018, 06:37 PM
I haven't kept up to track with Opeth for a long time now, but Mikael doesn't want to do growls anymore, is that it?

Totally agree! Mikael's clean vocals can carry a whole album. I don't miss so much the death metal vocals as much as I miss some of the heavier Opeth moments (Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park). That being said, I really dig Sorceress!

The music doesn't really fit death growls anymore. The last three albums are consider more 70's prog-rock influenced. The albums are more vintage produced. It's quite different from what you might remember!
Been playing this album quite a bit. One of the more straight forward tracks offthe album. The video is pretty cool.

IN the "everything old is new again" category, the band SANTA CRUZ. They RAWK. They sound and look like they are from L.A. in the 80s, but nope, they are from FINLAND in 2018. I honestly thought this was an old vid of a band I never heard of from the 80s. Nope this is music from this year. They really nail the look and sound. Sort like if STEEL PANTHER were not trying to be funny but instead were dead serious, well as serious as one can be and still be doing 80's L.A. Metal in 2018 Seriously though these guys can play. The guitar players are truly amazing IMHO. The songs are all catchy and fun, it's honestly refreshing to get away from the constant scream/growl that's infected everything "Metal" and not a blast beat in sight. Please 2 Enjoy.
