Drums :/ Options

I want to make my own backing tracks and maybe do some easy compositions but, even though I have vsts and a DAW, I have no idea how to make a drum line interesting...What do I have to study before beginning to make an interesting drum line?

To be able to program good drums you have to know how they should be played in reality. You don't need to be a drummer but it's necessary to know how the drummer would play something cool and then you can program the same thing. Of course you have to know timing and all possible note durations. This is important for quantization (puting the notes on the exact right place in the bar). No chance of programing good drums without knowing this. If you are not familiar with playing drums then I suggest using loops. Loop is just 1 or 2 bars long groove that you copy as many times as you need to make a drum track. There are many loops and drum fills ready to go in most drum plugins. EZ drummer has really good library of loops. You can change tempo for any of those loops. The good thing is that is all made in midi so you can see midi parts and how it is programmed. That way you can learn how to program yourself. I hope this helps a little.

Thanks Emir, good thing I have EZ Drummer than but still, gonna try to learn that aswell, knowing more doesn't hurt

If you got EZdrummer then it couldnt be simpler mate, heres how I do it.

I`ve usually come up wuth a riff or an idea of something to begin with, I then find the tempo and choose a groove that fits with the riff that I`m playing, then I`ll drag the groove into reaper and drag the right side of the groove right accross so its just one drum pattern maybe playing for 2 mins+

Now I have a single drum beat all the way through, I then record my guitar riff to the drum groove, just using the groove as a kind of metronome.

Once I`ve done that I go back to the drums, if theres stops in the riff where I dont want anything to play I highlight the length of the gap in the drum track and remove the selected area, as I listen to the two tacks played together there might be obvious points where a drummer would normally put in a fill of some description, so I listen through the drum fills to find something that I like, I create a new drum track (for fills only) and drag n drop the fill to the point on the track that I want it, I then highlight and remove the selected fill part from the main drum track and I go through the whole piece adding fills like that.

When you`ve finished you`ll end up with two drum tracks, one will have your drum beat and the other will have your fills only,

the other thing you can do to vary it up a bit is once you`ve done all this you may find that the original drum groove that you chose is ok for some parts but you need a slightly diferent feel or pattern, so open up the grooves again, find the one that suits and replace segments of the main drum track with the new one.

I always choose the most similar drum beat to what I imagine , from the library of ez drummer or addictive drums, and than go and edit the midi file to make the perfect drum loop (to fit my idea) ...Rest is just copy paste

EZ Drummer has a nice groove library, so you can choose the most similar groove and then just alter it a bit to accommodate your backing.

I usually compose(playing live on midi keyboard) my own beats if its odd rhythm, or special fills, if its just a standard song im probably choosing a premade beat.

You can draw inspiration from already existing patterns in your drum vst.I do that all the time when I need inspiration for that kind of composing.I also input the pattern from the vst,and the re arranged it a bit.
