I was thinking whats too old to be playing in a band?
I feel like i missed my calling.. I started playing guitar when i was 14, and played on and off for 12 years. I had alot of people tell me that i was good... Then i got caught up in putting straws in my nose and chasing around women, and quit playing.. then i settled down and got married... Now after 12 years off i have recently started playing again( in january), and im coming up with alot of nice sounding riffs.. I would like to be in a band, but i was thinking who would want to come watch some 40 year old playing speed metal riffs onstage...

Just wondering whats everyones thoughts on this... And to the younger members, would you watch a band in their 40's playing metal?

I'm 19 and I'd happily play with you on stage, let alone watch you.

I've never been bothered about jamming with or watching musicians of any age. Most decent metal band musicians are in their 20s/30s anyway, so what the hell? Look at bands like Sabbath, Maiden, etc. I don't see anyone with a problem there.

Have your wife check your bottom side for your expiration date. If it is later than 40 you are ok. If not you are required to take up shuffle board, move to Florida and form a Polka band!

I'm 17 and I'd much rather step on stage with an older person who is competent than one who is my age and sucks. Besides real music lovers are not superficial, the listen to what they like. So the only prerequisite to rock out is to have the ability. smile.gif

P.S. One of my good friends is 55 and he plays it all, in many places. If he can do it I'm sure you can.

There is no age limit man. Metallica is old, Slayer is old, Iron Maiden is old, Judas Priest is old...you get the point, and they all play music similar to speed metal so go for it man!

There's no such thing as an age-limit.
Almost all the best live bands are bands with "older" members. 30/40+. I wouldnt even call it old at all.

Age isn't a barrier to expressing yourself musically. I've seen loads of 50+ and 60+ guys still rocking out on stage. Some amazing blues musicians also. You might get a few looks if you do Fall Out Boy covers at 60+ though lol biggrin.gif

for the first line, go tell that to Jimmy Page and Slash. laugh.gif wink.gif (there not really speed metal, but you get the point)

for the second line, as a 12 year old kid, if they are good, Yes!

My dad is 50, he sometimes play with his old band(guys around 45-55). Even i played with them one time live. Next year they(and me! biggrin.gif ) might start a Status Quo tribute band for this festival for tribute bands.. never too late imo.

Age ain't nothing but a number man.

Music is timeless and ageless. If you want to be in a band man be in a band. Do what will make you happy, that's all that's important. Like many others have said there are guys still rocking into their 70's+.

And the Stones by the way still put on an amazing show....

I couldn't care less about the age of the band as long as I like what they do.

Outlaw,

I am the editor of a Neil Young concert movie (in progress) directed by Jonathan Demme. He's 62 and rocks out like a 20 yr old. With JD & Neil's permission I will post an excerpt of what I think is the greatest live performance in history. You're in for a treat.

Similar story here. I'm turning 40 soon and have secret plans to form a band. (Don't tell my wife). I'll jam with you old dudes who rock anytime.
