There used to be a set of smaller JBL's in the Studio we used to use, 8" Woofers (if memory serves).
They had a very decent sound to them.

The model seems to be JBL 88 Plus, when searched I kept seeing hi-fi related results. JBL has a very wide range of speakers, their studio monitors are fine but as normally not all their speakers found its place in studios, I'd focus on that while researching.

Those speakers are quite "vintage" and just don't sound "modern" when you are trying to mix/master/etc. They will sound great if you are playing beatles records and such as that stuff was mixed on speaks not that different than these in terms of cone technology. However, I'd say get the new 8 inch JBL speakers. I got the 5 inch and they are amazing. 8inch are $250 each, 5 inch are $250 each

I would take a look at Ebay, you could probably find an active pair for close to that ( i would also recommend an 8 inch woofer as you will not need a sub )

Conversely, if you want to use them as 'home' stereo speakers, they'll be great.

Thanks guys! I too was thinking that these would be a bit old for modern recording and mixing but I figured I could get the lowdown here and find out if there was something special about them. Yeah Ken, they might make some decent home speakers but I already have a vintage pair of JBL C40 Harkness from 1957 that I need to refinish. They are really cool looking cabinets, BIG though. smile.gif
