Hello guys!! Welcome to our new Collab!! I think that this one could become our official Instrumental Anthem!
This time, inspired by ideas from https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=59979, I've composed a backing track that includes 3 different parts: Heroic Ballad, Clean Section, Maiden Metal.
You can choose the one that inspires you to record your take and share it here.
Here is my try on Part 2 section. Great to explore some ideas..

Here is my try for the first part.
Very nice mate!! Thanks for braking the ice here!!
QUOTE (Mertay @ Feb 21 2019, 02:45 PM)
It's only eq'ing but there is a lot of bands used to be honest I sort of mastered it to be flatter sounding like part 1-2 is.
But basically lowered the 3.5khz area and increased 8khz and 1 khz to compensate the treble loss. On the more bassy one I increased around 80-100hz
Feel free to send the new mixes to me, I'd like to try mastering them if needed.
Thanks for the details!! I'll be uploading new files here. I work on Collabs using the full proyect so I can edit arrangements if necessary so these tracks mastered are not useful for me, but maybe we can share here your versions if they help participants to work on their takes.

Late reply sorry, I thought it might be better for me not doing that as then they'll eq their tones differently and would get more harder for you to eq their solos.

Hi Phil! What about following the chords with chord tones? Try using thirds at first.
Thanks for the advice Gab, I'll see what I can do, it just doesn't seem very exciting playing along in 3rds
Cheers

I don't agree! It's a killer starting point! The main melody of this song is build with thirds, and other notes from the scale are used as passing tones, exactly as it happens in the guitar pro example that I've shared!
Chords are: D - A - Bm - G. Follow this chords with thirds and you'll recognize Electric Gipsy's melody. We could do this with a lot of songs. The key is to make the connections interesting, and what's more important, to start moving, start creating, so then inspiration appears and we can start adding other notes from the triad and even other extensions.

I meant playing along just using thirds doesn't seem exciting, and passing notes does help. I guess it's my lack of phrasing skills that makes it unexciting.
I'll try buddy but only three days left and my mentoring thread to work on is going to be hard I know you've got your tour of Mexico very soon so you can't extend the deadline.
Cheers
Phil

If you build from the thirds idea, add passing notes, bends etc. you will end up with something awesome, I'm sure, Phil!
Mind you, this was done quickly, so bear with me on mistakes.
Ben, the last part of that GP5 is brilliant. I guess I don't have the knowledge at the moment to build something like that, it's a little bit overwhleming to be honest. I'm so used to just playing the pentatonic in the root of the whole piece that this is scrambling my brain. I know I really need to work on following the chords but I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever be able to do it, you need multiple brains to be able to lsten, play, keep in time and follow the changes
I've been looking at the scale generator to work out where the thirds come from, it appears that it is the third note in the scale working from the name of the chord. So D's third is F# (1D, 2E, 3F#). it's just working it all out. I guess I've messed myself up over the years just knowing the 1, 4, 1, 3, 1, 3, 1, 3, 1, 4, 1, 4, pentatonic shape. That's why I'm saying I can't see me getting anything done for Saturday, I don't have a mental map of where to go, my head is spinning with going back and forth between the different keys in the scale generator, I'm getting that feeling of needing to run away I'm actually getting stressed trying to work something out, my stomach is like a washing machine.
Cheers

The first thing that I recommend you is to don't think that music is so difficult. You can still play over this one using Pentatonic and you'll find cool things.
About thirds, you don't need a lot of knowledge to identify the thirds of this collab chords. You only need to know which are these notes and play them as an starting point. Don't worry about the collab, or dealine, try it because it will be a very nice exercise, and it's totally related to what we are working at the mentoring program.
Let's take the second part:
Chord Progression: Dm | F | Am | G || x3 F | F | E | E ||
These are the thirds of each chord:
Dm : F
F : A
Am: C
G: B
E: Ab
That's everything you need to know to follow those chords with thirds. Let me know what happens!
Posted by: Phil66 Feb 28 2019, 10:20 PM
Quick idea, I kinda get lost with the chords. Is it Dm and F in the first bar, Am and G in the second bar, E and Dm in the third bar, F and Am in fourth bar. ie: total of five chords, two chords per bar so when you get to the fifth chord (E) in the first half of bar three, you have the first chord (Dm) in the second half of bar three? Sorry for my crazy brain

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Feb 28 2019, 11:35 PM
The first 4 chords are perfect, but remember that those first chords are repeated 3 times, and then we have 2 meassures of F and 2 of E.
Chord Progression: Dm | F | Am | G || x3
F | F | E | E ||
Posted by: Phil66 Mar 1 2019, 08:53 AM
Thanks Gab,
So is it bars 1, 3 and 5 are Dm F (two chords per bar) and bars 2, 4 and 6 are Am G (two chords per bar)?
This is completely new territory for me, its daunting to be honest, I'll get there slowly but surely.
Cheers

This is the whole progression:
Dm | F | Am | G | Dm | F | Am | G | Dm | F | Am | G |F | F | E | E ||

I did two takes. I tried the third one and I have an interesting idea but I won't be able to record it today or tomorrow but I think these two are enough. I'll send the audio files later via PM.
PS. I tried to record my parts in a way you can create some nice transitions into others' takes. I hope that works fine

How about this? If you don't get time to answer, I'll post a video and tracks anyway, if you don't use it, no worries.

Hey Phil,
May I suggest a little "trick" to spice things up? I like your take a lot already and I can actually see myself adding some harmony to it!
You play the same melody twice in the beginning, but how about instead of playing it completely similar you spice it up just a tiny bit and then you go into the faster picked part you already play?
I played around with your take a little bit in Guitar Pro just now to show you my thinking: Phil_and_Ben.gp5 ( 3.83K )
: 65
I can also go from what you played already
Here are two takes, and to be honest, yours sound just fine too

Hey Adam!! That's so nice! Great to see you playing over two parts of this one! I'm also curious to hear what you are going to record over the third section.
And finally video (first full video and then individual parts):
Awesome stuff Ben and Phil!!! It's very nice what's happening here. These collabs exist to share and to learn while having fun. That's what's happening here, thanks to you guys!
Killer video and melodies Ben. You rock.

Here is a slightly modified version, I didn't want to change it too much because Ben based his takes on my original. I hope it's usable. What I would like to have done was to have a bit of crunch on the last two bars and maybe play double stops but today is the deadline.
Sorry Gab, after this post I noticed my guitar was a little bit out of tune. I ALWAYS tune up but for some insane reason I didn't tonight. I can do another take if your timeline allows. Sorry

It was fun but also a nice challenge. Is there anything that needs improving? If so, please let me know in the mentoring thread. I was also wondering about two things (both concerning 3rd part), I'll talk about it more in the thread.
I tried recording it for a while today but I keep butchering it. I have an idea I'd love to submit, though. Is there still some time left? I know the deadline was yesterday.

I need to submit some part of my thesis tomorrow and I should write a few more pages. If I take a break and do my takes right this time, I'll upload it! Also, I answered in the thread. I'm sorry for keeping you waiting but I wanted to do it properly
Edit: I got the first track, there are 2 harmonies to be done but it'll have to wait til tomorrow. Could you check it in the mentoring thread and let me know if it's okay or if I should re-do it?

Here is another go,
I changed my mind, on the last two bars I wanted to give a sense of going into something more powerful for the next part. Might need a volume adjustment though.

I know it's past the deadline but I couldn't resist having a go. Bit too fast for me and it ain't the best but I had a go anyway. Not much time so as usual, I'm winging it.
Well done Phil!! Nice to see you rocking over this fast tempo backing and moving with the modulation. Everything sounds good here. I think that it would be a good exercise for you to continue jamming over this one.
Posted by: Phil66 Mar 6 2019, 01:42 PM
Thanks Gab,
This is the first collab that I've moved with the modulation, makes it trickier. I guess the ultimate aim, maybe I'm wrong, is that thing where guitarists change key without running up and down the neck but that's a long way off yet.
I think I started each section with thirds too, fingers crossed

I sent you PM with the files. I did the last part just now and I'll update the post once it's on YouTube. If I was too late, let's just consider this an exercise It was my fault.
I used here 2 of my previous ideas and like before, I started the same and improvised from there. I gave up on harmonies because it's too time consuming and I should study for the exam more.
