Many newer (80s onward) Strats have a larger rout under the pickguard (swimming pool rout). You just need to cut or change the guard.
The string and bridge spacing doesn't really need to be any different than standard Fender either. Guys have been dropping Gibson PAFs into Strats and Teles forever. The whole 'F'-spaced thing is relatively new. SD and DiMarzio both make a ton of HB pkups for Fenders. Thank Ken for the great info and take off your pickguard to see what lies beneath
You will then know what to do in respect to getting humbuckers or not
