It wasn't my fault - I was listening to Tender Surrender by Steve Vai ... all of a sudden this red mist covered my senses, and when I regained consciousness I saw this in my browser window:
Damn you Pavel! My wife will never forgive me - how could you make me want a Jem so bad that I risked my marriage????
Posted by: Slammer Jun 23 2007, 08:53 PM
LOL!!
you spent $51.99 on guitar straps... I would kill you too.

You want a Ibanez Steve Vai Signature JEM because of Pavel ., not because of STEVE VAI.
I wished I had enough money to get one too, my favorite guitar too, among many others. Check this site out: http://www.vai.com/Machines/guitars1.html
Hey Andrew can you sed us pictures of your guitar and tell us if its really THAT good .

Nice guitar Andrew and Congratulations!!!
I bought a guitar off ebay a few weeks ago (in my Avatar and sig). I wanted a Fender USA made Hardtail. Some guy on ebay listed it poorly and I stumbled upon it. I bought it for $580 bucks after shipping and most used Hardtails go for $750 -$950....... Then yesterday I cracked open the pickgaurd to see what model Seymour Duncan Pickups I had and did some research......
Results: My guitar is actually a 1999 Fender "Big Apple" strat which was only made for 2 years by fender. The pickups are customized for fender and the pickgaurd, pickup colors, and guitar color was all custom for the "Big Apple" series... Long story short my used guitar value jumped from like $750 bucks to about $1200. Hurray me!
And I LOVE this thing to death!!! I have always wanted a Fender Hardtail and now I got one of the best ever made... So I can understand what it feels like to finally get the instrument of your desires. Have fun shredding and post lots of pics!
Hardtail

So what did she do to you?
Um, I used clever psychological trickery and minimized the fallout. What she actually did to me was made me buy her a couple of handbags - nearly doubled the price of the guitar
(She likes
expensive handbags!)

So you used "clever psychological trickery" and she managed to treat herself royaly while punishing you (with pricy bags)
AT THE SAME TIME.
Andrew, just remember you're still a winner, every battle has it's losses and you.. you got your JEM.

Who has time to work when a new guitar has arrived? They will understand. And if not, just play something amazing (because we all know that new awesome guitars instantly increase your skill ten fold) and their heads will explode in awesomeness or simply by the sight of your new axe!

Unfortunately that's not really true....i also had a bit of those thoughts about better playing or something...i was terribly surprised when i found out guitar has nothing to do with your playing skills
The only thing that made life better is the awesome tremolo and and overall tuning of the guitar - it almost never looses the tune and the octaves can be perfectly tuned.

Ahhhhh .... I was going to post a review last night .... but for some reason I spent the whole night playing my new guitar !!!!
This guitar is a work of art, and it plays like a dream! The tremelo is awesome (never had a decent trem before), the hot pickups give awesome sustain and really boost your legato - the neck pickup gives a deep bluesy rock sound, the middle single coil gives you a cutting strat like rythm .... it palm mutes way better than my Variax(which is its main shortcoming) ... I could go on, but the summary is that it is all I wanted it to be!
And no, I can't really play like Steve Vai or Pavel yet, but not only is this guitar easier and nicer to play, it is also more inspiring, so one day I will be playing like Pavel and Steve Vai
Posted by: brandon Jun 28 2007, 03:47 PM
haha that is hilarious dude.....wives just don't understand.Currently all I have is a Fender style amp so I've been trying to get a new british style half stack forever, but my wife keeps saying things like "don't you already have an amp, why do you need another." I try to explain it to her, but she just doesn't understand....so now I have to try and figure out a way to get a head and cabinet I really like for under $800......not impossible, but it might take a little while and a lot of "I love you baby, your hair looks nice." Awww, remember the good ol' days when you could spend every penny you have on gear and not worry about getting in trouble for it. I remember walking into a shop one day just to look around and seeing a '73 Marshall plexi superlead for sale (pre circuit board, still hand wired) and whipping out a credit card and buying it on the spot......that crap wouldn't fly anymore....which I think, but I'm not positive is a good thing. Anyway Andrew, I feel your pain man...good luck.....the best thing to do is keep it a secret for at least 2 or 3 years and thing let her find out about it. At that point it's been so long that you can just say "oh man, that was years ago......I told you about this"....... but I guess she'll probably notice the new guitar before that happens...anyway, once again good luck and enjoy the new guitar.

Just decided I am going to call her "The Lady Galadriel" ...
Why? Well, she's a Jem -> Gem, which makes her precious ... My Precious -> Gollum -> Tolkien -> The Lady Galadriel (since she is posessed of an Ethereal beauty!)

Congrats Andrew and enjoy.
Last guitar I bought - Gibson Standard with a red gloss tiger stripe top - I waited until my wife was away for a day for work. Bought it and hid the receipt and then lied about the price . Figured as she doesn't really know much about the guitars she'd never know the price. She still doesn't know how much I spent today - 3 years later...
I have this on going 'discussion' with her - she thinks I have too many guitars (not true - only have 4) and I think she has too many shoes over 50 pairs). At the moment I'm edging towards getting a new guitar - if only she'd go away for a few days
Cheers,
T

It's beautiful. It connects on so many levels man!
The wine (? winerank? well, growing stuff then) inlays they connect to the elves being close to the nature, the pale white color. It's slim and elegant, yet deceptiv and powerful.

The growing thing is supposed to be "Tree of Life" whatever that is ... sounds very Elven though

I took a quick trip to the local music store and sure enough they had a Gem in stock. After the first few minutes with it I could easily see what all the fuss is about. Now I have to seriously think about buying one of the lower-spec equivalents So much for the Maton being my last purchase this year.
