GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Let's Recommend Movies!

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 22 2014, 11:39 AM

Hey guys! It's been a while since we had a thread like this one and I think that there must have been many new movies that we should see. The last one that I saw and I really recommend it "Dallas Buyers Club". It covers a very hard topic but I think that it's a top level movie, I really enjoyed it.

What great movies have you seen lately?

Posted by: Ben Higgins Jan 22 2014, 11:48 AM

Everybody should watch Rambo.

There. I've said it.

I just saw Rambo 4 this weekend for the first time even thought it is from around 2008.

The new Hobbit movie is better than the first if you ask me, but nowhere near the LOTR movies!

Thanks for the recommendations guys! Keep on sharing movies! wink.gif

Ice Age, and Monsters Inc remain at the top of the pack, and if you haven't seem emperors new groove yet, watch it tonight. I thoroughly enjoyed Tron as well, perhaps because I'm a sucker for that game... Also the new Monsters Unversity scene with the mom in the van, I have never laughed so hard during a movie. I like pixar movies.

*Sidenote- The tron legacy reconfigured soundtrack (a soundtrack remix of the movies scores by daft punk) is an absolutely phenomenal electronic album. Ki theory remix takes the cake out of the bunch.

Lol! I'm from Turkey but haven't seen that one biggrin.gif also make sure to watch this one;

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0182060/

Word is it's (sort of) officially the worst movie ever made, they teach that movie in college because it has every mistake in it imaginable biggrin.gif

Posted by: AK Rich Jan 22 2014, 09:12 PM

I watched "Riddick" the other night. It was good , but not nearly as good as "The Chronicles Of Riddick" was.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 22 2014, 10:43 PM

Great stuff guys! I'll monitor this thread to wee these movies. We decided (with my girlfriend) that the next weeks we are going to see movies instead of series as we have been doing the last year. We were focused on Breaking bad, Walking dead, GAme of thrones, Black mirror, and now we want to see al the movies that we missed.

hahah I'll give priority to "emperors...". We really like that type of movies.

This is the last one that we saw in this style...

Were the two movies that sprung to mind.

Posted by: bleez Jan 23 2014, 12:00 AM

I watched Troll Hunter recently and thought it was totally brilliant biggrin.gif Its kinda like 'the blair witch project goes to Norway'. Maybe a bit 'silly' in places for some people but personally I thought it was great.
I saw it on TV but missed the first 15 minutes, next day I bought the DVD smile.gif

The one I have is in Norwegian with english subtitles, which I think is better than a dubbed version. The Norwegian language is really cool anyway so it added value to the movie imo.

Posted by: Ulrik Jan 23 2014, 12:46 AM

A recent one.

This one is on youtube full lenght, but no subtitles.

One of my favorite Danish ones.

Posted by: DeGroot Jan 23 2014, 02:11 AM

Not really a new movie but I recently saw Warrior. I was expecting it to be more of a cliche fighter film, but this one really blew me away. The story and acting (Nick Nolte) are all top notch.

Posted by: Azzaboi Jan 23 2014, 04:31 AM

Hmm ok, so your a serious movie buff, well in that case... for 2013 - I would say these where reasonably good to watch:

Pacific Rim
Oblivion
Elysium
The Wolverine
After Earth
Iron Man 3
World War Z
Man of Steel
Star Trek Into Darkness
Fast & Furious 6
Now You See Me
The Lone Ranger
Riddick
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Oz: The Great and Powerful
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The Croods

Nothing really stood out as a masterpiece to watch, but still nice watch with a box of popcorn.

My recommendation are:

And something horror (my favorite type) smile.gif

Posted by: PosterBoy Jan 23 2014, 11:26 AM

Chasing Amy
The Breakfast Club
Pump Up The Volume

The Thing, the one made in the 80s with Kurt Russel
Swingers, Vince Vaughn, John Favreau.
The Deer Hunter, probably one of my faves

Nice thread, I'm more into tv series lately, but there are some nice suggestions here that I'm interested in watching.

One relatively new film I liked these days was Jack Reacher smile.gif

Posted by: Amitai Kedmi Jan 27 2014, 01:00 AM

I'll be relevant-

Spinal Tap is a must!

Searching For Sugar Man. A great documentary, you just can't make up stories like that!

Posted by: metalheadlady Jan 27 2014, 03:02 AM

Someone else here mentioned world war z. My boyfriend and I went to watch that when it came out, and we totally loved it. One of the zombies looks like my English teacher. Desolation of Smaug was also mentioned, which I also loved. Catching Fire was also one I liked, but I am a teenage girl, so keep that in mind with my movie recommendations. I can also second Ben about Rambo, as they were my absolute favorites when I was about 9. I haven't seen any of them in a long time now that I think about it.

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Jan 27 2014, 03:09 AM

Awesome thread!

I recently saw this movie on HBO that I didn't even know about even though the director is one of my favorites :

Movie : I wanna hold your hand - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077714/ (it is a very light movie, Beatles themed)

From the movies I saw recently, I liked this one :

Posted by: sammetal92 Jan 27 2014, 05:32 AM

How I live now (Action/Drama) - In my very honest opinion, this movie is very underrated. For some reason, I've kind of bonded with this movie, maybe because its of the English countryside, but the story has been very interesting to me, I've already watched it 3 times smile.gif

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - I think the first Hunger Games was AMAZING and Catching Fire is EVEN MORE AWESOME! biggrin.gif

hahaha I love Spinal Tap so much! Cirse had some stories very related to the ones found in that movie... laugh.gif

Both 'Troll Hunter' and 'The conjuring' which I've seen 2 nights ago are great. But the last one is REALLY scary... I will never buy an old house smile.gif For certain!

I saw this movie yesterday and I liked the soundtrack. One of the song it really obsesses me. The subject is interesting and the guitar guy even if is a little more feminine for my taste has something cute and mad in the same time biggrin.gif

This is the song that I'm talking about: smile.gif

I just watched 'The Purge' movie last night, must say it was surprisingly pretty good, enjoyed it...

Must be the best idea the 'murican government has come up with! Once a year have 12 hours of a killing spree, free for all, to purge mankind of their natural violence urges. Making unemployment and crime rate at an all time low - as they pretty much killing themselves off during that single day, homeless unable to afford any security or protection, while the rich go into lock down. Great concept, the movie could of pulled it off been a bit better and had endless possibilities, but I liked the idea behind it. It's something I can see them doing or at least considering - with all their other stupid ideas.

as in Dario Argenti?
Great director and if you like him and his brother then you may want to watch 'Berberian Sound Studio'. It's kind of a homage to Italian psychological horror films and set in a 1970s post sond studio - some grea shots of old analogue kit.

On the same sort of off kilter non-action art hose film line:

Suspira
Biutiful
Blood Simple
Things to do in Denver when you're dead
Jamon Jamon
The Sea Inside
Japanese horror films but not the US remakes
Anything by Pedro Almodovar

the full length Spanish horror feature film that my daughter had a couple of scenes in...

I don' recommend 47 Ronin smile.gif It's a bad remake laugh.gif And the effects DON'T make up for it! Instead, I think that the link below will act as a guide for many of us, me included:

Yes!
I will find Berberian sound Studio - looks great.
My other Fave Argento film is "the bird with the crystal plummage".

yes! The Conjuring was really good. I though it was a perfect balance of Evil Dead, The Amittyville Horror, and The Exorcist. It was a truly creepy flick.

Here's my 5 cents for this topic smile.gif

Some good movies:

Reservoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Fargo
Stand By Me
Smoke
Leon
The Shining
Dead Poets Society
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
Spinal Tap...of course it's the one of the must see for every GMC'ers (first time when you see it's very hilarious...of course it's always good wink.gif

The Wolf of Wall Street is good new movie... I laughed many times and it's good thing wink.gif sometimes bad comedies are very boring..when you wait..wait.and wait..at least one good joke or scene or anything which make you laugh or even a little smile biggrin.gif

Posted by: AK Rich Feb 3 2014, 07:31 AM

Some older movies I thought were really good were Robert Rodriguez's Mexico Trilogy which are" El Mariachi" "Desperado" and "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" And a good older comedy is "Get Shorty" with John Travolta. Another one is "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" For a new movie , I just saw "Lone Survivor" and thought it was really good as well. I am going to have to watch "The Conjuring" My lady and I love a good spooky movie.

I don't usually watch horror movies on my own, as I live alone in a big house - I mean on my floor, I am the only one laugh.gif Big tough guy, eh? Well, my cousin came visiting last weekend and he insisted we would watch it - I said ok, let's do it and guess what, he didn't resist until the end... but I did laugh.gif

Hahaha.....It seems that boys are not so different than girls biggrin.gif
I love horror movies but I never watch alone tongue.gif
But you know why I love so much these movies? Usually at final all people die in a horror movie smile.gif Because I know this concept at the beginning I never get attached by a personage. In other type of movies, I like a personage and very often he die in the final and I cry like a baby laugh.gif
