Whammy For Beginners?

i was looking to buy my first electric guitar, and im thinking of something like cort x-6 (with a whammy bar) (or x-11 maybe tongue.gif),

the thing is i am going to keep this guitar for a long time, because im not gonna play a guitar 1 year and change to a new guitar or something. im gonna use it for a few years maybe, so i thought to buy a good one instead.

im aware that x-6 or x-11 have a whammy bar and i am aware that it is hard to tune.

what i want to ask is, is it wise for me to buy this guitar with a whammy bar for my first guitar?
im pretty used to electric guitar because i sometimes play my friends guitar or go to a studio. but i never tune a guitar with whammy bar before.

should i go for this guitar?

i wanted to learn the whammy bar too, but is it that hard to tune whammy bar?

Hmm, if it is your first guitar, I wouldn't really recommend whammy because they are poor quality made and go out of tune often. Also the setup issues can be quite big when a beginner so consider it. If you really need whammy try to find a quality made one on some guitar on don't take it at all for starters. My 2 cents smile.gif

I agree with Ivan. Whammy bars on cheap guitars are a total pain.

Tremolo systems vary hugely even on guitars in the same price range, but most in that price range won't stay in tune for long at all. If you're set on having a whammy bar then how about a fairly cheap Ibanez RG? My RG370DX has a Wizard II neck which is one of the fastest necks around (which means it's great for shreddy stuff) and stays in tune pretty well. It's definatly one of the most popular beginner guitars, and in my opinion, looks stunning as well.

Hope thats useful.

The whammy is a pain in a..s if the guitar is cheap!
I don't know the model, but cort is not bad at all...try the guitar your self.
My first guitar was an ibanez paul gilbert with a cheap lo-trs bridge but I have no problem with him because if you set the bridge he can't give you big problem, of course don't play some monster tricky whammy-bar like Vai... laugh.gif

I've never played either of the corts that you're looking at (can someone who has chip in?) but that Ibanez is a very solid beginners guitar, and stays in tune pretty well.

If it's a bit out of your price range then are you willing to buy used? The big advantage of a looking for such a popular model is that theres always quite a few going on ebay. Just as an example this one will probably end up going for about £150 I imagine. If you don't want to buy used then this is about the cheapest your going to find a new, decent RG model.

I just noticed that you live in Indonesia. It's probably worth noting that a lot of ebayers don't ship there and it would probably be very expensive if they did.

Jason

EDIT: Heres a review on the Cort X-6, looks like a rebranded Ibanez RG with more or less the same quality. I say go for it!

THere are a lot of solid quality guitars made in Indonezia too! Try to find through your local dealer or maybe pay some factory a visit and you could get some cheap whammy guitar.

In the end it is all down to, what you pay is what you get, so be carefull, whammys on all cheap guitars are just not good enough. I don't think anybody will recommend it. Maybe try that Ibanez, but imo Edge Pro tremolo system is a minimum for a good quality whammy bar with no tuning problems. But it is a still pain to setup it etc.. wink.gif

^yeah, If your just beginning with a whammy bar, I'm not sure that you want to go out and buy a floating trem. Best whammy bar out there, but you will probably be VERY discouraged the first couple of time you change strings. If you do buy a guitar with a floating trem, I'd recommend watching the videos that are pinned at the top of the gear forum page. And read up on them, to see what your getting yourself into tongue.gif I have two guitars with Floyd Roses and I couldn't be happier.

Here's a site that will explain everything, but it'll be pretty weird, just reading it, and not actually having a guitar in your hands, so you can see what he's talking about. If you have any more questions, I'll try my best to help. smile.gif

There's many great guitars without floating bridges, but I don't really know of any that I'd get with just a regualar whammy. There's plenty I'd get that are just fixed tremelos (no whammy at all)

God, there's a million different guitars...but I'd probably recommend an Ibanez, just because they're so versitile. I can be playing face melting metal one minute, and blues the next, on mine.

Here's a link of Ibanez's most recent fixed-bridge models. But keep in mind, there's always Gipson, Fender, etc. Just research it some wink.gif

There is nothing to apologize or feel sorry man, you ask when you are not sure, we are all here to help each other with our knowledge.
I'm glad you chose a fixed bridge as an alternative. There are lot of guitars with fixed brige depending on the style, for starters try Gibson, EPihone, Ibanez, ESP, Schecter, Jackson, even fixed strats and teles if you're into them smile.gif Lot of options, just naming few.
