GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Akai Effects Pedals And Cheap Pedals

Posted by: liveOASISforever Apr 21 2013, 08:51 AM

Has anyone used Akai pedals before. I seen a review in a magazine a while back with a Akai distortion pedal that got a really good review. There selling online from £40 to £60. I f you have used them whats you're thoughts.

Pedals are pretty expensive it would be nice know if anyone has tried out cheaper range pedals and was really surprised how good they were.

Thanks Sean

I've used their Delay/looper 'Headrush' pedal for years and it's always worked and sounded fantastic. The only drawback is it's really big (takes up a lot of pdlbrd space).
Which one are you talking about? The 'Deluxe' Distortion? It sounds good in this vid ... http://www.akaipro.com/deluxedistortion

I haven't tried Akai pedals but I have two Joyo (vintage overdrive & vintage phaser)and I really recommend these ones:

PS: That akai distortion pedal looks really cool.

You may not have heard this yet, but many of the AKAI Pedals are actually "Rebranded" JOYO or BIYANG pedals. It seems that it's cheaper to simply repaint/redesign etc. The good news is, in many cases they are the same exact pedal but for a lot less becuase it says JOYO instead of AKAI.

Here is a link to a thread with some pix and info.

Here is a pic of one of the AKAI distortions that is the same pedal as one of the chinese versions but more expensive. Bottom line, by a Joyo or such and save some cash smile.gif

Those Akai Dist boxes - the actual box - look exactly (other than the paint job) like my Biyang 'Mouse' ... which was $39.00.

I'd wager they sound the same also. The Chinese manufacturers are starting to clone existing designs and in some cases, they are the actual manufacturer for a given brand that is later sold at double the price as a "boutique" pedal. The good news is, the Joyo and Biyang pedals sound the same and in many cases are the same as the pricier branded pedals. I just ordered a couple of tube screamer type pedals by joyo and Biyang to try them out for myself smile.gif Together they cost way less than a single tube screamer unit and the Biyang actually uses the same chip for sound that I was looking for in a tube screamer. I love the tube screamer tone, just not interested in paying extra for the spiff paint and logo smile.gif
