Congratulations on your guitar mate, may it serve you well!
Since you play all sorts of music, a versatile solid or hybrid amp would do the trick. 12" speaker is a must, and power shouldn't above 50W, since you are playing at home. For home play you will use mostly 5-10W maximum. Solid state amps can sound good on low volume, and I can recommend some amp with a good clean channel, and good drive channel as well. Check out Randal solid state combo series, they have good cleans, and enough of gain for trash as well. They are not too bluesy, but with a tubecreamer/Boss BD2/SD1 pedal you can get a nice bluesy overdrive.
Other very good options are Vox Valvetronic series, and Line 6 combos as well.
My guitar teacher loves to trash randall' s. I asked, are these new koch amps better than the randdals? QUOTE: " Everything is better than a randall, theire junk"
I second the line 6 idea. If you really like to explore many different tones they sure can do that. 12" speaker is a must. I agree with Ivan.
The line 6 Spider Valve 1x12 in a amazing sounding amp. The tubes warm up the tone a lot but because it's built on the spider platform you can get just about any tone you could ever wish for. Probably, at the high part of your budget range.
tommyboy
Mmmm, ill choose the Vox Valvetronix...differents kinds of amps, effects...its a great amp!
I think the Line6 amps are without question the best amp money can buy in your range. The tones are unlimited and professional sounding. I had a Spyder in my house for 6 months then my friend took it back I was so sad to let it go. I used it a lot more than my Mesa Boogie!!!
There's a new 5W amp coming from Blackstar, model HT-5, that has e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g at least I'd wish for!!! Tubes, headphones out !!, fx loop, cab emulator iiiihihihihihi
Won't cost you a fortune, 360€ so maybe you'd get to buy a couple of effect pedals aswell for your metal tones
It's out Nov 28 so there are no reviews on it yet but I dare to promise it's going to be awesome!
Only 360e ? that seems like a pretty good deal for home practice to me, I second to that MickeM !
If I were you I'd look for a used Line 6 Duoverb. They are sold REALLY cheap these days and sound amazing for the price. Also, though they're a bit heavy (Not by any means annoyingly heavy though) You can Split the signal between the two speakers or blend the sound for when you're playing loud. Don't let the price fool you, I played one and It definitely competed with any new hybrid/cutting edge solid state amps. Check em' out on ebay. Here's a couple links.

i might have a deal with my mom P:
no duoverb?
vox valvetronix vt or vt-xl, the new peavey vypyr is getting great reviews too
I would go for 30 watts for these two amps, when you start to play more you can look into getting a tube amp and pedals, with the valvetronix and the vypyr you should have all the fx and amp distortions you would really need for home play
You can always get a 5 watt tube amp that has been suggested but it's likely not going to come loaded with fx and versatile distortions, making it a much more expensive proposition
