GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Help On Finger Strength...

Posted by: ChordMaster345 Apr 15 2011, 10:29 AM

I've noticed that the little finger is being used a lot in chords and other songs.
Is there any exercise or technique for this. Not just for left hand but right.
Also, are there any books or lessons on finger picking.
Thanks biggrin.gif

As long as you keep practicing those chords that use the pinky regularly, you'll build up the strength in a week or two.

The pinky will have to be stronger to play:

1) Thicker strings
2) Notes closer to the nut of the guitar (i.e. the lower notes on the string)

Take the chords you're trying to learn, and pick a chord that uses your pinky on the high E string (the thinnest string). Apply pressure, pick each string individually to make sure that every note is fretted correctly (extra emphasis on the pinky's note!). Let go, take your fretting hand (left if you're right handed) off the neck, and form the shape again, play it again. Repeat this for 5-10 min, daily.

When your pinky is comfortable with the chord, pick a chord where the pinky plays a note on the B string. Repeat the above method. Work up the strings (it'll get tougher and tougher) and you'll increase in strength, gradually.

When that's all done, try to find some chords which are tough for the pinky, such as this minor chord below:

CODE
--------------------
-----------10------
-----------9-------
-----------10-------
-----------12------
--------------------

The 12th fret has to be played with your pinky, and due to the stretch it has to make, and the thickness of the string it's on, it'll be tough at first. The closer you move this shape to the nut, the bigger the stretch, and the harder it'll be to play.

Remember, stop playing if it hurts.

When you said you wanted exercises for your right hand too, what specifically for? If it's finger picking based, I can't help you out.
