I just told your story to my mates in the Romanian PRS community and they found it very funny and nice biggrin.gif Their congratulations and envy on the purchase, my good man biggrin.gif Now - we all want to hear her sing, so as soon as she arrives, please do treat us with a recording wink.gif

Would you settle for a recording of me making her hack and yodel instead?

This is going to feel like the longest wait ever, but they did say end of "this month" and we are pretty dang close to the end of it. I feel like little Timmy in his pajamas and cowboy boots anxiously peaking down the stairway to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus.

It just got here - and right out of the box, NO adjustments necessary at all! Maybe a slight adjustment when I go up to 10-46 string gauge, I guess these are 9s, but I can't see 10s making any drastic difference.

I'm blown away by how good this guitar feels! At work so I haven't had a chance to plug it up yet, just strumming it here - and this neck, action and finish are perfect. I'm anxious to compare the stock pickups with the Custom 22 US pups at home.

I'm hoping I won't feel the need to change a thing except adding the strap locks.

This looks beautiful man!

I would take it for a spin at the luthier for two things:

- a setup based on the string gauge of your choice
- replacing the nut with a bone one - this is more of a personal choice, but I did this with both my SEs - I felt an increase in sustain, if you were wondering about the reason

That's a great idea Cosmin - I had not thought about that. I will take to the luthier for the first string change, we've already talked, but he had mentioned a "Roller Nut", I had never heard of one...

http://www.allparts.com/099-0812-000-Fende...r-Nut_p_97.html

At the time I had pondered the idea of sinking a Floyd Rose in it, but I like the tremolos on these things, he suggested the change to locking tuners, and the roller nut, and if I wanted a D-Tuner, to go with a low E Machine, but if there is no locking nut, there's no need for a D-Tuner.

When I asked him about the roller nut he said, "Each string rests on two ball bearings that eliminate friction. As the string stretches back and forth it can’t bind in the nut."

What do you think?

Congrats! thats indeed a very nice looking guitar smile.gif

As for upgrade, I played roller nut on a fender and liked it. Its feels light like bone when playing since its not huge like graphite+ its metal I liked the smooth similarity of open and bar chords when compared.

My only concerns would be the measurements as PRS neck might have differences in width+ the D and G strings are angled on PRS headstock unlike Fender's and this is important for tuning stability. If the luthier says its ok then sure I wouldn't argue but just ask if he did this to other PRS guitars too to be safe.

Oh but yeah play it a lot before modifying anything as much as needed, who knows maybe you'll like it as is or something else would need a tweak for your liking smile.gif

Thanks for the feedback on that. The luthier did say I would have to check the measurement to make sure, but I would rather him do it.

But I think I would be just as happy with bone - really, if it's just a little better than stock, I know I'll use 10-46 because that is on all my guitars and I like just getting a 10 pack at a time.

This was interesting - Paul R. Smith talking about nut material. Listen to the bone hit the desk...

Cool smile.gif To me its all about the height not so much the material, I use a floyd locking system and this really allowed me to get the strings as close to the strings without buzzing as possible (since its screwed not glued) and honestly this adjustment reflects so much on how the guitar feels.

Gibson also seems to move to graphite. To me though its more about comfort than tone as they don't need lubrication or crack/break, prbably has production benefits too. Guthrie Govan on the other hand switched back to bone from graphite saying that a maintained bone nut is just as durable as graphite.

On the table hitting thing biggrin.gif I like Paul's videos and sure he has a point but I'm also sure a brass or floyd nut would even sound better than others, in reality brass and floyd are the least preferred biggrin.gif

I wouldn't overthink it if I were you, just prefer what feel nice and safe+make sure the height is as low as possible smile.gif

Great video man!

Thanks for sharing it and I am glad that you are giving this idea a good thought. Now for the floyd... it is only a personal thing, but I totally dislike floyd rose systems due to the string changing procedure and the fact that if you use bending techniques which involve more notes, you will have a problem and there's one more thing - tuning. I like to be able to switch tunings on my guitars as fast as possible. Floyd doesn't let me do that. So to me, it's more of a hinderance than a benefit smile.gif But each to his own wink.gif

Indeed - I like Floyd Roses, but there is no need on a PRS, I like their bridges as is - and easy to tune, I'm not a dive bomber but rely heavily on the tremolo, I won't even consider a guitar (unless acoustic) without one.

You know how people just learn to play differently, and that makes up their style, like Richie Kotzen shredding hard rock with his thumb and forefinger on a Tele while singing at the same time. I have always relied on a tremolo, more so than finger vibrato I think, I don't even think about it now, it's just as much a part of my playing as the strings are.

I have to say though, I am just as happy with this SE Custom 24 as I am with my US PRS's. You can see the slight variations where some cost can be cut, like the router for the plate on the back - the SE model just sits on top of the body, and the nut, and the recesses on the front - less contour - but it plays like a dream and is a beautiful guitar.

PRS seems to have maintained their integrity going to an offshore factory to cut costs, I have found no fault with this guitar at this point and think it's the best guitar for under $1000 I have ever put my hands on.

I still love the new Jackson, it's a different feel and just as fun in a different way - but for ease of playing (for me) PRS is all that and more - right out of the box.

Why do you think I fought so much to become their endorser? smile.gif Because I do believe in the quality and all around awesomeness of this instrument.

You are indeed right about the personality of each player wink.gif I for one was a bit obsessed with floyd rose when I was too much into Steve Vai and then at some point I realized it hinders two of the things I really like to do in my playing: tuning down and bending and that's when I gave it up.

For me, a tremolo unit is pretty much enough and sometimes, fixed bridge is all I need smile.gif

Same here actually smile.gif mine is locked and for sometime I've been thinking about making it dive only permanently but never got to do the mode.

I do like it locked though, the tuning stability is at least on my guitar is amazing, don't lock the headstock for 2 days (just to stretch them naturally by simply playing the guitar) after that lock them and never unlock until string change.

But a more important thing is specially on floydrose the tuning part on the bridge is very high, when learning guitar it quickly helps to find the right spot where the right hand is anchored. After getting used to that it feel funny with non-floyd guitars, mine is a lo-pro and after 15 years I still sometimes miss that height smile.gif

By the way steve vai is a huge beck fan, this to me is a great example what a vintage type trem. can do smile.gif

Jeff is one of my favorite players and he is living proof that you don't really need a Floyd in order to make that whammy sing smile.gif It's all about exploring! If we are to talk about bridge height - I dislike the Les Paul feel for certain - that one feels really high for me smile.gif

Plus, it takes a lot of time to change strings on a Floyd tongue.gif

Are you guys familiar with the Tremel-No?

It's not just for Floyds, but it allows you to lock the trem in place (almost like turning it on or off), so if you want to bend without going out of tune, you can, or even keep playing if you break a string.

Very interesting device, but since I for one am planning to stick to a non Floyd regimen I don't find it useful. But there are a lot of our friends here at GMC who can sure find a good use for it smile.gif
