Hello Art!

We are starting with your MTP work for June in this thread. As arranged in your introduction thread, I am providing you with transcribing assignment in your 1st assignment! I have decided to make it as popular and poppy as possible, and we will discuss why as soon as you complete the assignment!

1st assignment :
When you believe transcription (verse and chorus at least)

- Check out famous song "When you believe" HERE
- I would like you to transcribe Harmony and Melody parts for verse and chorus!
- You don't have to transcribe every single verse and chorus nor to do voice add ons, I am just looking for basic melody and harmony!
- Complete your transcription in Guitar pro software and submit it in your thread here.
- For extra assignment, you can work out chord inversions and do bass part!

Deadline for this assignment is 6 days from now which is 9th of June!

I hope this will be enough time for you to complete the work. If you need an extension just let me know.

Look forward to any questions you might have, feel free to respond here any time!

Pedja

Oh my.. Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston - my two favourite "singers"! dry.gif
Well, homework is homework I guess..
I started transcribing from the link you gave me, but after the intro the audio quality wasn't to my liking, so I followed the music from here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6INAvfwazW4

Just intro, first verse and first chorus.. I considered doing the bridge too but didn't think I'd survive listening to any more than I had to tongue.gif
I simplified the vocal melody and ignored those atrocious, migraine-inducing, over-indulgent melismas that I so love..
Since Guitar Pro seems to make up its own form of musical notation, throwing centuries of convention out of the window (unlike Sibelius) and it's not designed to accommodate piano music or anything, the music looks a bit confusing (atleast to me it does) - I just rushed to get the notes down as I heard them.
I ran it, concurrently whilst transcribing, through some VSTs to get a nicer sound; I've attached the mp3 - hopefully this will give you an appreciation for why I chose the notes that I did. MIDI has never sounded good outside of retro gaming.

Anyhow, here you go:
Attached File  wyb.gp5 ( 15.61K ) Number of downloads: 153

Attached File  WYB___sample_track.mp3 ( 1.92MB ) Number of downloads: 218

Art my friend, be honest and tell me if all this was your work?
Guitar pro file is almost 100% complete and arrangement is great. If you did this in so little time, fantastic, I will push you even more. If not, we will focus on some other things smile.gif

What I usually do when figuring out instrumentation is put the track into Cubase and adjust the eq/freq so that I can bring out, say, one instrument more than the other. Other than that, it's the good old fashioned "use your ear" method and try it until it fits.

This is exactly what I wanted to get from his assignment. You see even tough Art was asked to do POP billion dollar tune, he showed in less then 2 days how it should be done. I have no worries for Art's future in music, if nothing he can work as transcriber for various publications smile.gif

Thanks Ruzz biggrin.gif
I like that others can join my thread and observe my MTP progress.
..and Pedja, if transcribing pop songs pays the bills I'll be happy. I'm certainly not having much luck in my scientific career at the moment.

I've updated the guitar pro file to include the chord names on the electric piano track (track 4 I think)
Attached File  wyb.gp5 ( 19.33K ) Number of downloads: 142

EDIT: guitar pro displays major 7ths as "M7".. made me confused for a second because I'm used to seeing "maj7" or delta7

This is exactly what I wanted to see from you in the first place. Perfect work with chord symbols. A/C# is enough by the way but I understand why you would label it as C# min#5 or b6 smile.gif
For your 2nd assignment I will pick some movie theme like I told you yesterday in the video chat. In the meanwhile you got a day to maybe polish this one more or improve arrangement smile.gif

Cool. I used to play French Horn in a wind orchestra during my school days and I remember playing this.. come to think of it, that's probably why I'm quite partial to arrangements with strong horn sections.

Man.. there are some harmonies in this that are much more complex than I thought!
This is going to take some time.

4 bars you've got already. I'm not complaining, I've figured it out I think - I've just done the section 1:04 - 1:16, in which the horns sound simple enough but they're not! Didn't sound right until I made the chords maj7ths - like I've said before, I struggle identifying things when there are layered chords are played on the same or similar sounding instruments. If nothing else, it makes me appreciate John Williams more.

Also - I'm going off the version I have on my PC because of CD quality - I prefer to go from the higthest audio quality possible. It's still the Raiders March and I think it's still performed by the Boston Pops Orch, but there are subtle differences such as the lack of horns/or possibly quieter horns during the recapitulation of the first theme. It's essentially the same though..

If that is the case, lets see what you will have until 19th. After that I will give you final 2 assignments for June. Should be lots of fun. Start thinking of type of lesson you would like doing for REC!
