GMC Forum _ Introduce Yourself ! _ Me Old Guy... Need New Tricks

Posted by: steveb Dec 10 2009, 03:23 PM

Hi GMC -
Thanks for putting together this website. I'm probably decades older than most of you on here. I'm 53 and have been playing guitar for
an embarrassingly long time when I consider my playing ability. My current guitars are a Taylor 810 and Fender EJ Strat. I have fun playing
but, just don't seem to progress much. I don't know what the problem is really, I do put in the time, but maybe not efficiently. I've been trying to concentrate more on technique and theory since my hope is to someday be able to "rip through the changes", but that may end up just being a dream. Between, work, my son and taking care of the house.... I can't dedicate a ton of time, but I still manage to get 1.5 hrs of dedicated time in a day. I practice with a metronome, but can seem to get past 16th notes with the metronome set to 100. I'm not really a speed freak, but there's stuff I'd like to play that's pretty fast. I'm all over the board as to what type of music I like.... gypsy jazz, straight jazz, fusion, rock,
metal. I find I have a hard time keeping things in my memory though. I'll hear a tune, while I'm listening I feel like I know where things are going, as soon as I'm on my own, can't remember a damn thing. Well that's my story. Thanks again Chris and Crew for putting this place together.

Yep... I'm 44 with 2 children and all the sports teams and home work and house stuff too! It's good to know that we are not alone in sticking with our love of music!!! I know for me it's my hobby, or where I focus my "free" time. So log in, and settle in. This is a journey, and there are tons of lessons for every style and skill level. I guess for me I know that it's more of a mindset (to study music at this age) than a product. I just watched the movie Anvil, a great movie for all musicians to see. Really speaks to the "heart" of a musician! cool.gif

My advice.. settle in and relax as you are at the right place. I am 45 with a six year old and a new one on the way huh.gif tongue.gif I stopped playing nearly 25 years ago and then picked it up again after finding this site.

There is so much good stuff here.. the instructors and awesome and and the community members are nice and extremely helpful.

Enjoy!

Welcome man! As a charter member of the "Managed Decline," portion of my life, I can tell you...this is the place to be. I've long lost the dream of being able to "rip," anything, but there are students and instructors here that just will blow your socks off. It's just great to be in their company. I think I've learned more here in the last year than I learned in the previous 30.

Cheers!
