Sleep is awesome, it reminds me of Sabbath.... Something about the raw, don't-hold-anything-back sound, the bluesy dark pentatonics, even the singer reminds me of Ozzy a touch..... I like it

What makes something "Stoner"?
Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 23 2011, 09:50 PM
I recognize the style when I hear the guitar sound... it is usually a fuzz drive. The main influences of this style are the first Black Sabath albums... that sound, that vibe, that rhythms... I think that the first band considered stoner was Kyuss... they used to have vintage sound, fat and deep guitars and basses and slow tempos. At first this style included many new bands that want to achieve the sound of the first Black Sabbath albums... nowadays it has been evolving and you can hear stoner rock influences in bands like Foo Fighters or Artic Monkeys...
That's all that I know but there is nothing better than a wiki explanation for this... check it out:
"Stoner rock or stoner metal[1] is a subgenre of heavy metal,[2][3] combining elements of psychedelic rock, blues rock, traditional heavy metal and doom metal. Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo and features a bass-heavy sound,[4] melodic vocals, and 'retro' production.[5] The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered foremost by the Californian bands Kyuss[6] and Sleep.[7]"

This is definitely the topic I have been waiting for!!
Gotta love Red Fang their other video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3Vcoq-QRo4is also very amusing. Don't remember the last time I could relate so much
Here's two more bands very worth to be mentioned:
As for the "what makes stoner?" I'd say it's mainly the GROOOVE, very low tunings, fuzz and of course the right attitude! ;-)

I didn't really knew how to recognise the stoner genre, but this thread has given me a pretty good idea,
from what I used to listen to it reminds of Down
Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 24 2011, 04:46 PM
It's awesome how many Stoner bands exist! I didn't know the two that Lenni posted. Thanks man!
and Down is awesome! They are coming to Argentina, I hope to see them.

Grand Magus is awesome But I don't think it's stoner, as most places they're referred to as Heavy Metal or Epic Doom (like Candlemass).. Still a great band though, love their new album!!

It definitely has stoner elements, although it wasn't my intention to draw drastic lines with stoner and other styles - it is too often crossed with metal and rock.
