hey everyone, I can play at a decent speed and with good comfort for most techniques until i get to the higher frets. The action is slightly higher up there and i have trouble finding a comfortable spot to place my left hand thumb to help my navigate the narrower frets. any advice for gaining comfort in the upper registers of the guitar? thanks all!

it seems like you say that you are bothered by the slightly higher action.. couldn't you lower the strings a little then?

other than that i guess practice is the way to go.. totally nailing stuff in the first couple of frets doesn't mean you can do the same in the higher frets.. lower the speed, nail it in the higher frets, and then raise the speed a little.. remember the metronome.. smile.gif

You can always go for higher position for the thumb
since frets are smaller and you don't have to put your
wrist much ahead like you do on lower frets
specially when there's some stretching involved.
At least that's what I do. smile.gif

thanks to the both of you for the reply

Zion, I guess i will have to bust out the metronome again until i get comfortable up there. Thee action isn't horribly high or anything just higher than say the 1-5 frets but i think that is typical to most guitars.

Muris, I will try throwing my thumb up over the top a little higher, i typically play with it a little over the middle point of the neck behind my middle finger so its just something new to learn!

either way, sounds like it is time to slow down and acclimate to the slightly different playing style the higer frets demand!

I agree with what has been said here, just take it slowly and try to find the most comfortable position for your hand smile.gif

It is in deed a little bit more difficult to play on higher frets as the distance is smaller.
I think with proper practice (metronome and/or backing tracks) you can reach your tempo no problem. It just takes a little bit extra effort thats all. Lower action helps too wink.gif

Also on higher frets, the usefulness of the pinky isn't as big as on the lower frets. While on the lower frets the general rule is 1 finger = 1 fret, on the higher frets You can easily use first three fingers for 4 or even 5 frets, and leave the pinky for bigger stretches.

For me it also depends on the guitar. On my Ibanez S it's much easier than on my Les Paul.

Yeah, depends on guitar, my Ibanez Artcore is a bit more difficult to play then usual electrical guitars, so I sometimes have problems. You must use different left hand technique, and fingerings for higher/smaller frets!

For me I actually have to leave my thumb at around fret 17 because the bolt-on neck doesn't allow me to put it further up. Playing on higher frets surely mean a different fingering to access all frets and it does need additional practice. Above fret 17 i only use 3 fingers except rarely when i need my pinky for legato.
