Right now I'm basically a strict alternate picker but I think I want to learn sweep picking so will sweep picking mess up my alternate picking?

Action makes a difference but I think even with high action you can sweep just fine. I have pretty high action on my guitars and I can sweep OK.

You will improve your playing in general when combining different picking techniques, so no problem there mate.

No, no, it will only improve your playing. Coordination, control...
It will also improve your alternate picking believe it or not! -------------------- |

Keep working on both and try economy as well,
it's basicly kind of sweep combined with alternate, with all those techniques you'll have plenty of options. -------------------- Youtube

I'm an alternate picker, but I've tried sweep picking as well, although I'm horrible at it... I don't find it messes up my alternate picking, so you shouldn't be afraid of that !

No technique should mess with the different one. You should just practice all the techniques you want to develop - regularly. Then you will be able to choose an appropriate technique for the part you want to play, if you practice enough you will be able to make decisions automatically without thinking about them.
