Right now I'm basically a strict alternate picker but I think I want to learn sweep picking so will sweep picking mess up my alternate picking?

I don´t think so. Alternate picking and sweep picking are two different things. You should always be aware of what you´re playing so that you have a general view on your skills.
Just start with sweeping, every new technique is useful! smile.gif

AP takes a lot of practice to keep your chops up but sweep picking is very useful for speedy arpeggios or tasteful embellishments. I would learn the technique asap because it takes forever to 'master'....

hey quick question about sweep picking...

right now the only guitar I have is a Mexican strat. The action is a little high compared to other guitars that I have tried, and this makes my attempts at sweeping quite difficult compared to other guitars.

my question is: should I wait, and would it be worth it to wait until I get a better guitar before I start seriously practicing sweeping?

I know this is probably a "preference" kind of question, butI just can't rationalize spending a large amount of time learning to sweep, when it seems to me like it would take a shorter time to learn on a better guitar.

thanks,

Chris

Why don't you lower the action on the strat? The lower the action the easier it will be to sweep.

I'm under the impression that such things are expensive.

How much does it typically cost to have an adjustment like that made?

Action makes a difference but I think even with high action you can sweep just fine. I have pretty high action on my guitars and I can sweep OK.

Nah, you can bring your guitar in for a setup..shouldn't be more than 50$ USD.
I find it easier to sweep on a guitar with lower action, though I've been known to sweep on my guitar that I use for slide - which for obvious reasons has a very high action. I think for learner purposes if it were lowered it would make learning the technique easier.

no man, but you´ll see...
every case is different, I mean, every guitar player has his particulary way to hold the pick, and that´s why, in some cases, one can feel some mess in the learning process.
so, if you already have a good and comfortable position on alternate picking, try to adapt this position to all your playing.
every technique has different movements for yoour right hand, so you´ll see how your hand is developing while you practice. so, it´s not necessary to pay extra attention on that.

just stay relaxed!

The practice of sweeping won't mess around with the alternate if you don't get out of your practice list the alternate.
If you practice both techniques you'll get equally proeficient with both of them.

I'm working on a lesson about how to improve the arpeggios in the sweeping, I'm sure soon will be online smile.gif

Great to hear!

Keep working on both and try economy as well,
it's basicly kind of sweep combined with alternate,
with all those techniques you'll have plenty of options. smile.gif

I'm an alternate picker, but I've tried sweep picking as well, although I'm horrible at it... smile.gif I don't find it messes up my alternate picking, so you shouldn't be afraid of that ! smile.gif

No technique should mess with the different one. You should just practice all the techniques you want to develop - regularly. Then you will be able to choose an appropriate technique for the part you want to play, if you practice enough you will be able to make decisions automatically without thinking about them.

Cheers
